In past years, the deadline to register for events and be included in the main random preliminary performance draw has been January 31. This year, that deadline is February 28. Expect the timing to see lists of registered bands to be delayed this year. marching.musicforall.org/2021-registration-information/

Another big add - one that can only help the activity as more students get the opportunity to observe the best of the best.

Another big add - one that can only help the activity as more students get the opportunity to observe the best of the best. This is interesting. A good thing! But also interesting. MFA is giving up a lot of ticket revenue by doing this, actually probably giving up most of their ticket revenue as performing students far outnumber parents and band staff. Makes me wonder if they've landed a big sponsor that is music education focused who is basically covering the revenue difference for them.

Makes me wonder if they've landed a big sponsor that is music education focused who is basically covering the revenue difference for them. IMO this is more impactful for smaller events. Perhaps the reduced potential cost of the day will allow for 25 bands at a regional instead of 15 (and thereby reduce risk of cancellation). The other major impact is semifinals at GN should be a packed house all day instead of just the last hour leading up to awards.

It is actually a genius marketing strategy that will cost bands ~more~ money, while appearing to save lots of money. Previously bands received 20 day passes through the "cooperative program" which was typically priced upwards of $500 worth of tickets. At super regionals and grand nationals, the value of these tickets was $750+. This was always a selling point for BOA: the registration fee pays for itself with free tickets that can be sold to parents or could be used for additional volunteers and chaperones in excess of the allotted number of field passes.
However, cooperative tickets are no more in 2021, instead students get free admission. But regionals already offered free finals admission for all bands, and Grand National finals still requires student tickets, so the savings is only at super regional finals and grand national semifinals.
— At regional events, MFA is going to be making an extra $500 per band by stripping away the cooperative program tickets with no benefit or savings passed along to students or bands. — For super regional finalists, MFA will be making an extra $750+ per band again by stripping away the cooperative program tickets with no benefit or savings passed along to students or bands. — For super regional non-finalists, instead of that over $750 in free tickets, you will receive free tickets to finals for all of your participating students (previously these tickets were $5 a student). So unless you have more than 150 students, MFA will be making additional money off of you as well. — For grand national finalist and semifinalist bands, MFA will be again be making $750 per band by discontinuing the cooperative program tickets with no benefit or savings passed along to students or bands. — For grand national non-semifinalists, the savings from free admission for students might be enough to offset the loss of cooperative program tickets, but depends on the size of the band.
Plus, staying an extra day at super regionals or grand nationals means an extra night at the hotel that you are required to book through MFA, and for which MFA receives a kick back.
To run a little math, using attendance numbers from 2019, MFA will bring in an extra $235,500 from the 471 bands competing in BOA regionals with no loss of revenue from finals tickets. (Plus the additional ticket revenue from parents of the 11th and 12 place bands that now advance to finals) $31,500 from the 42 super regional finalists $28,500 from the 38 national semifinalists So the nearly $300k in additional revenue should be enough to offset the much smaller loss of $5 and $10 student tickets.
As ticket prices have creeped upwards, MFA has been slowly decreasing the number and value of cooperative tickets given to participating bands, so it makes sense that they would finally just cut them all together. And doing under the guise of a trade for free student tickets is a great way to do it.

This is a pretty normal timeline for MFA to release tentative performance times to performing ensembles, but I would be shocked if they released these publicly at that time. In past years, you theoretically could have known the entire Grand Nats schedule before list of performing bands were even released, but that would require contacting each band individually and finding out their performance time.

Thanks for the math on the tickets Jeremiah. You are spot on regarding the cooperative tickets.
As a former booster president, we did use those tickets to sell to fellow parents, family members, fans of the program, etc. to offset the costs of the fees/trip.

Bridge water - raritan won a regional before Do you remember which one? I knew they've come close but didn't realize they won one. marimba11 was probably talking about when BR HS won the 2010 BOA Prelims Towson Regional, but unfortunately they lost in finals to Westminster HS (MD) and Hickory HS (VA) and placed third. Here is the history of BRHS scores throughout every BOA Regional from 2019-2000 and other NJ schools who competed in BOA.
Bridgewater-Raritan High School 2019: (64 members) 10/05 Mid-Atlantic Regional, MD: 59.150 (21st place) Prelims

I spoke with a friend today who is good friends with someone who works with BOA event scheduling/organizing, and this person said regional lists should be out "within the next couple of weeks." I'd imagine it'll be soon after WGI Virtual Finals. Probably the last week of April.
Obviously, take that with a grain of salt, but I thought I would share anyway. It’s been around mid-May the last couple of years so it may end up being that, too.

Update on the schedule: We won't be hearing who's attending where for a (long) while. BOA is currently working with schools through each district's Covid procedures to get a firm answer on attendance. We'll be looking sometime around mid-summer before the lists come out.

It is a bizarre mishmash of protocols in schools today. Not just from state to state, but also within states. At one point within a 20 mile radius in Central Indiana you had kids in school full time, hybrid and virtually depending on age and district.

Rather, they’ll just stagger-release the schedules 2-3 weeks before each regional, mirroring when the fall packets for directors are usually released. Hope I’m wrong, but it’s a thought.
