Awards are about to start shortly here. Before they do, here were my placings after seeing everyone in person today.
1. Carmel 2. Centerville 3. Miamisburg 4. Kettering Fairmont 5. Beavercreek 6. Carroll (IN) 7. Anderson County 8. Campbell County 9. Franklin Central 10. Reeths-Puffer 11. Fairfield 12. Greenfield-Central ------------------------------ 13. Archbishop Alter 14. Carroll (OH) 15. Newark 16. Bellbrook 17. Woodford County 18. Christian Academy of Louisville
We'll see how finals could shake up my rankings. It was very hot today and I'm sure that affected several performances.

How’s Centerville looking? Any better than previous years?

Mmmmm. Well their size certainly wasn't affected by Covid. Looking to actually be larger than normal. Visual was pretty solid like always for this. The music is different for them but they are still able to jazz it up. Woodwinds were a standout imo while the brass needs to bring it back a notch or two. The guard outfits are LOUD to put it mildly but then, that's part of the point of the show. Only played through the ballad. As always, early season still so plenty of stuff to clean up!

Some quick thoughts. A bit surprised that Fairfield didn't make it in. They had a lot on the field and certainly weren't bad imo.
Greenfield-Central once again only put on about 3 minutes of their show which probably tanked their GE scores. That in turn with Woodford going on right after them with a more complete show, probably boosted their GE scores carrying them into finals.
Well done to Archbishop Alter though! So few kids and beating bands quite literally 10x their size to make finals. Surprising, but well deserved. Respect!
If you want any other thoughts, let me know!

Kind of bummed to see Carroll in the bottom half, especially with Franklin Central cracking the top. It will be interesting to see the final scores.

While I appreciate Kettering Fairmont’s dedication to keeping the ensemble sound within its proper limits, that visual program needs some help.

Oh no! Flip flops? I think I’d go barefoot. Last time we saw a band try that at a particularly hot regional, they had to skip out on finals cause their feet got burnt up real bad Yes, the morning run was rough to say the least. No props as mentioned as well and most if not all the kids wearing sneakers (including a very bright red pair). No shako's either. They were playing in the dead of heat which I'm sure drained them. Also, while up in the press box, before they were about to set up in the endzone I heard that one of their Drum Majors passed out from said heat. But tonight's performance was much better. Quite literally, day and night. I imagine their score should improve from what it was in prelims. But then scores from prelims to finals have always been kind of finicky. That's just my opinion though!

What Anderson County has done with such a small band in terms of design is honestly incredible

5 minutes on the field and I am already in love with Carmel this year. This is going to be a fantastic show.

I think I like this Carmel show! Love the props and what they’re doing with them, they really transform the field. The woodwinds sound extra good this year, brass about usual (a little edgy but clean in the typical carmel way).

First of all, props to Box 5 for the improved audio experience. I felt like I was hearing a good balance of winds/front ensemble the entire time. Only caught the last 3 performances at Dayton tonight but had some thoughts: Anderson County is a very strong group! Entertaining start to finish. They sounded much bigger than they were. Loved all the ripple movements and shifting drill patterns. Really nice creativity from Centerville. Was that 2006 Cavaliers music I heard? The flute soloist is so musical! Carmel. Hoo boy. That show is a monster. That opening climax could wake the dead. Horns roaring a high concert F with DCI level guard right in your face. Ferocious and majestic stuff. Is this a GN champion show? Kinda impossible to say at this point. All these top bands are amazing and the season is only beginning. I’m just glad we have marching band again. Cheers!

I'm not crazy about Carmel's music this year. I love how the band is playing but not the arrangement itself (especially Part 1). However, it's shaping up to be a design masterpiece visually. It doesn't scream GN Champion though, compared to what I saw of Avon last week or Reagan and CTJ and maybe even TWHS through videos. They'll likely hang in the same area they did in 2019. Beavercreek took a big step up visually from their 2018 finals debut. I was impressed, and their show is a lot of fun as well. Still screams OMEA, but some BOA minded elements are creeping in. An easy finalist tonight. I’m coming around on the music. 👀
