Unless there are several bands planning to attend that none of our calendar stalkers have uncovered, this is shaping up to be another "everybody advances to finals" event.

Honestly though, none of those bands are ones I wouldn't mind seeing twice though either. Yeah there isn't a power band but there aren't any flops either really imo. I could see a real battle for several places here. As of right now, I'm likely going to be attending this event.

I’m thinking you’re probably right. If 15 or less bands show up, everyone will advance. I remember in 2019, 15 bands attended the Toledo regional and everyone advanced, and that was when only 10 bands were selected for finals.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of threshold they set for advancing everyone now that the regular number of finalists is higher I think it'll depend how late they want the day to go. Anything more than 15 I think would be overkill, but that's just me. Finals would go to almost midnight if they started at 6:00 with a break in the middle.

*shrug Even at 18 bands It's easy enough to start prelims at 9, go till 2 then finals starts at 5 and ends at 10

The doomed Ohio regional. Maybe it will go the way of Akron someday The best-attended years (since the demise of the Pontiac Silverdome) seem to be when this Regional is held at Bowling Green. Ypsilanti wasn't as well attended either even though the venues aren't all that far from each other.

I would like to see this regional move west, to Western Michigan or Grand Valley State. It would still get all of the Michigan bands and would likely draw more Indiana and Illinois bands. It would lose out on a few Ohio bands, but there would still be two regionals in Ohio.

The problem they are facing in that direction is that there are major Fort Wayne and South Bend area contests around those weekends. So you're losing out on bands like Homestead, Carroll, Penn, etc plus all the smaller groups that may come. But they can't really push the show later in the season either cause then you run into state run contests.

Since when do we need three regionals in Ohio anyway…? Lol. As gets said seemingly every year when this question gets asked. Why do we need 3 regionals in Ohio? For the same reason we get 7 events in Texas. Because Ohio bands attend BOA events regularly. Between the local regionals, Indy SR, and GN, there's A LOT of Ohio representation on attendance lists. Then there's the fact that there are a bazillion colleges in Ohio, so plenty of venues to choose from (see again how often these 3 events move around). Plus, depending on which region of Ohio you're talking about (SW, NW, Central/[North-]Eastern), Ohio is very conveniently located to pick up attendees from many neighboring areas. 13 other states are within a distance to make a BOA regional a zero-missed-schooltime trip.

I think for me it’s also the factor that Ohio bands don’t seem to attend these early- & mid-season BOA regional events with the same alacrity that they did maybe a decade ago. When you’ve got a few events in the same region that all seem to be underwhelmingly attended a few seasons in a row, then they seem to be a little repetitive.

Yeah, the Ohio v Texas comparisons just don’t really hold weight. I’m not sure there’s been a Texas regional in the last decade that didn’t pull at least 20-22 participants. Not to mention, Texas bands are perhaps even twice as big on average as the bands attending Ohio’s regionals. That means way more ticket sales, merch sales, and concession sales (for the sponsoring program). It’s readily more apparent why there are seven Texas regionals (and there could easily be more) and why three Ohio regionals is turning into a headscratcher.

The biggest issue with three Ohio regionals is that they are three consecutive weekends (as well as early in the season). When one of the regionals was held in Eastern Ohio, there was more of a draw to bands from Pennsylvania and points east. With the move to the Columbus area, that has gone away.

Thats true, they’re plenty of venue choices in Ohio. But I would argue it is not conveniently located except for other ohio bands. Rarely do we see other representaion other than a few from Michigan, Indiana, and maybe PA. I think one Ohio regional would be fine, maybe two. Indy is pretty close by.

I think it’s time for a BOA NWA. 🥰 Would likely draw bands from Oklahoma, Western Missouri, North Texas, and of course Arkansas. Not a bad idea if an appropriate venue can be secured.
