Interesting Jenison is in the bottom 6. I also put Bourbon County in 12th in my predictions, so what do I know?

Wow, I can’t believe how small Lake Central is What happened? Several director & staff changes in such a short timespan created extreme instability within the program. On the other hand it’s amazing to see how much the Brownsburg program has grown in the last few years! This is a great show and they are the front runner for the gold today IMO. Great prelims run! Definitely feel bad for Lake Central. Two years ago they had a big drop in numbers. But excited for Brownsburg!

Bourbon County proving once again they can hang with much larger bands. Good for them

Impressive job by Brownsburg. Unfortunate finals time draw though. They didn’t have the best draw earlier either and ended up just fine. They will be ok.

On second view, there is definitely a lot of music performance issues both individual and ensemble-wise with Jenison right now. I think someone else already did a more detailed comment about it, which I agree with and I'd imagine that really affected their score.

Jenison has the show. They just need to perform it better because it's got a lot of rough edges. Very cool concept and design, but the bands needs to step it up.

Jenison has one of the more demanding books this year especially in the drill department so I'm not very surprised that it's a little rough right now considering how early it is.

Beechwood- Still think they sound incredibly good for a band of their size. I hope they're able to get more members in the future, which i'd imagine would give them much more potential with show design
Kings- Thought they played pretty well with a wide dynamic range, especially given their size. Ballad was a little rough again. The ending is pretty cute with the Band Together prop.
Lake Orion- maybe the music book is a bit cliche, but I think they're doing a really good job selling the show. Did they have any staff changes recently? I don't remember them being this good about a decade ago.
Dublin Coffman- pretty good control of pulse the entire show (impressive after seeing many bands struggling keeping in time). There was a pretty noticeable lack in center of pitch and overall flatness just comparing against the last performers (Jenison), not sure if the weather is cold there right now? I'd like to see them play more difficult music and push their dynamic range a little. Not a huge fan of the music book in this show.
Walled Lake- I'm not sure how exactly combined bands work, but they're doing a great job for the first season together. I thought they would've placed in the top 6, but i guess the judges disagree with me.

Brownsburg- Really big and powerful big ensemble moments, although definitely some balance and intonation problems. Very cool visual effects all throughout the show, especially the opener.

I was sold earlier today, but I felt like I needed a second viewing to make sure my eyes and ears weren't deceiving me. Brownsburg is 100% running away with this regional title, and I have them firmly in the bubble for GN (on the inside, actually). They were fantastic in 2019, but I can't believe the improvement in such a short amount of time. They have plenty of time to work out some of the ensemble moments. OHbandie already mentioned some, and I completely agree - brass let loose a little too much at times, but easy enough to rein that in given they have well over a month until GN. The design is absolutely beautiful and very much worthy of being in the GN finals discussion. Their percussion writing was especially fantastic (looking at you, front ensemble), and the soloists were terrific. Bravo to them.

Goshen- they generally have a nice balance of sound and looked pretty solid visually as well. Pretty clear why they took 1st in class AAA.
Lakota East- really beautifully played opening hit. Ballad sounded a bit shaky, but I really like their ensemble sound balance. I think if they had a complete show, they might have a shot at 2nd, but right now it's a pretty solid 3rd for me.

Color me surprised for Lakota East. That is some stellar design, one of the best I've seen this season so far. It's not quite strong enough to gun for GN Finals outright (especially in this hyper-competitive year), but they could make the top 22 and make some noise in the late teens on a good night.

Rockford- Some really solid playing and marching. The ballad is beautifully played, and I love the woodwind soli. I only heard occasional minor issues with pitch and attacks. I still think they have a shot to take the music caption.

Rockford really brought it tonight in Finals! I'd definitely give them the music caption tonight! Quite a few shows today that I think are going to be really great come November!

Bourbon County- Color guard is on fire! I have literally no idea why I put them in 12th from prelims (brain is not working in the morning, maybe). They also sound very good for a band their size, although several pitchy areas.
PCEP- a lot of difficult technical passages that are played pretty well. I still think a lot of the big ensemble moments are just way out of control. Ballad did not sound so hot either.
Finals predictions: 1) Brownsburg 2) Rockford 3) Lakota East 4) Goshen 5) Bourbon County 6) Walled Lake 7) PCEP 8) Jenison 9) Lake Orion 10) Dublin Coffman 11) Kings 12) Beechwood
Music- Rockford Visual- Brownsburg or Rockford GE- Brownsburg

I've been riding the Rockford hype train since 2018. 2019 was bumpy to say the least, but finally, FINALLY, finally 2021 was the show I've been waiting for from them.
I don't know who writes the music, but I believe Don Barrett is the arranger. I enjoy his work in Indiana (Western, Edgewood, Greenwood, Lewis Cass, etc.) a lot, but he's struggled a bit with being able to write on a national level. 2018 had a bit of pacing issue music-wise where the Tristan & Yvaine ballad climaxed and ended on a weird note and 2019 wasn't quite his best work. But man, this show is highlighting the absolutely terrific Texas sound out of Rockford and has some great pacing.
One small gripe I have is that this show just doesn't have enough of the visual moments- it's clear whoever wrote the drill has an eye for it. The drill can easily use a lot more of those eye-popping moments, but the season is long and we're still a month and a little more away from GN.
Side note: Really, who is Rockford's drill writer? Michael Gaines? I've been wondering this exact question for 4 years and I desperately want an answer.
