This school is 9 days old. It opened for its first ever day of school on August 24th. It's only the second new high school in the entire STATE of Iowa in like the past 20 years. Waukee and West Des Moines are the fastest growing cities in the state. Waukee High was so overcrowded that Northwest is immediately taking ~1,300 10th-12th students in its first year. Waukee was one of Iowa's top bands, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Northwest hit the ground running. This is so nuts to me considering probably 20 schools opened in the past 2 years in Texas. The fact that schools across the midwest are actively consolidating often blows my mind. It's really stark the difference between the booming states (CA, AZ, TX, FL, etc.) and everyone else. My current state of Wisconsin, for example, has ZERO schools in the entire state that would be AAAA in BOA. There are only 12 schools in Wisconsin that would be AAA (and only nine schools with 2,000+ kids 9-12). Everyone else is A or AA. The high school I attended in California had about 1,400 and we were considered a "small school." We were usually in division 3 or 4 (out of 5) in sports (and band competitions that used enrollment). But in Iowa or Wisconsin we would have been in the top division. I wonder what the smallest school with a competitive marching band is? According to my records, in BOA it's Shawe Memorial H.S. from Madison, IN. They're a 7-12 private school with 175 students (roughly 88 in 10-12). They attended the Muncie Regional in 2019.

These were pretty strong programs even 5 years ago but seem to have had challenges the last few years. But I don't disagree with this list, Camdenton or Marian should win, but of course we haven't seen anyone perform yet. Marching band season is definitely heating up or the weather is starting to get colder up North.

I can see 3-7 going any which way (though, color me shocked if Independence medals).

Not super familiar with these bands but my money would be for Candenton to win, Marian to at least medal, and the rest no idea. I loved the titanic show in 2016 by Bellevue West.

Predictions, or "How do you solve a problem like Maria(n Catholic)?"
1. Marian Catholic H.S., IL 2. Camdenton H.S., MO 3. Prospect H.S., IL 4. Grain Valley H.S., MO 5. Morton H.S., IL 6. Bellevue West H.S., NE 7. Independence H.S., IA 8. Millard North H.S., NE 9. CLASS A 1. Independence H.S., IA
CLASS AA 1. Marian Catholic H.S., IL 2. Camdenton H.S., MO 3. Grain Valley H.S., MO
CLASS AAA 1. Prospect H.S., IL
2. Waukee Northwest H.S., IA 3. Papillion-La Vista South H.S., NE
CLASS AAAA 1. Millard North H.S., NE 2. Millard South H.S., NE
This will be a very interesting show, for me. First off, how do you place Marian Catholic? As long as Greg Bimm is there you're a fool to count them out. But they DO tend to be a bit of a slow starter, a band that always seems to peak at Grand Nationals. Will they be clean enough by October 9th to fend off Camdenton? The two are very, very close in power ratings. And don't count out Prospect, lurking right behind them. These will almost certainly be the top three, in some order.
After that? It's a mess. Grain Valley, Morton, and Bellevue West are all of similar power levels and could place in any order (and any of them could medal in AA). Independence seems pretty slotted into 7th. But then another trio of Millard North, PLV South, and the expected capabilities of Waukee Northwest. Millard North actually finished 2nd at the Nebraska state championships in 2019, ahead of Bellevue West and behind only Gretna (who I would LOVE to see at a BOA show someday). The judges at BOA St. Louis in 2019 weren't impressed with Millard North, but could they jump up in placement with a more favorable panel?
Last, I hope Ottumwa has a great time and enjoys the event! (Because my power ratings have them 17 points behind 13th place Prairie. Not one point seven. Seventeen.)

I would bet that Camdenton, Morton will actually do better. Much depends on how much of a show Marian Catholic brings with them to the competition. If this were a few weeks later, I would pick Marian here but not in early Oct. Predictions, or "How do you solve a problem like Maria(n Catholic)?" 1. Marian Catholic H.S., IL 2. Camdenton is a quick starter and Marian Catholic is a slow starter. Even if Marian Catholic doesn’t have the best showing here and finishes below Camdenton you still couldn’t count them out of a good nationals placement.

Out of the Illinois contingency attending this regional, Prospect is the riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Since 2016, here are their ordinals at BOA events: Show | MPI | MPE | VPI | VPE | Music GE 1 | Music GE 2 | Visual GE | Dayton 2016 Prelim | 5 | 3 | 8 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | Dayton 2016 Finals | 5 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | St. Louis 2017 Prelim | 21 | 14 | 25 | 9 | 17 | 17 | 18 | St. Louis 2017 Final | 8 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 9 | 11 | 14 | Powder Springs 2018 Prelim | 6 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 13 | 9 | 2 | Powder Springs 2018 Finals | 4 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Indy 2019 Prelims | 27 | 17 | 27 | 19 | 20 | 13 | 17 |

|
Hoping they have a show similar to 2016 - their most successful season in quite some time. I'd love to see them start to challenge for a higher ISU finals finish year in and year out. 2011-2016 was a 2nd place finish behind Marian every year, and since then, they've finished 5th in 2018 (no finals in 2017, 2.5 behind Lockport in 4th), and 4th in 2019.

What do we think is the over/under for this regional happening again next year, whether at the same venue or a different (and more acoustically sound) location, or scrapping it altogether? A lot of directors were turned off about the listening environment at the UNI Dome. It’s terrible.

A lot of directors were turned off about the listening environment at the UNI Dome. It’s terrible. In my opinion, if Greg Bimm gives it a thumbs down, the facility won't be used again. If he is okay with it as a venue, chances are good that it will be considered going forward. Cedar Falls meets a geographic need and the indoor facility, even with sketchy acoustics, improves the chances of being able to hold a complete show. In early October, there is an equal chance of temperatures in the 80s and of getting measurable snow.

A lot of directors were turned off about the listening environment at the UNI Dome. It’s terrible. I think there's a big future for this regional if BOA is more cognizant of scheduling conflicts. Minnesota and South Dakota's marching season ends the second Saturday in October with the YIM Championships. Wisconsin's state championships are the third Saturday in October. Iowa's state festivals are both the second and third Saturdays in October. So really, the third and fourth (and occasionally fifth) Saturdays in September and the first Saturday in October are really the only viable dates for this regional. The weather before mid-October in Iowa is usually very pleasant. An outdoor regional shouldn't be a problem. I would suggest moving it to the Des Moines/Ames area. The only thing you'd have to watch out for is the scheduling conflicts with the big Des Moines area competitions: Johnston (S3), Pella (S4), Urbandale (O1), West Des Moines Valley (O2), and Ankeny/Waukee (both O3). If Jack Trice Stadium at Iowa State is unavailable, Des Moines has two, absolutely fantastic, large, high school stadiums that could easily host a regional: Dragon Stadium in Johnston, IA and Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. Waukee Stadium is a little smaller than those two, but is also an option. I hope BOA gives it another shot. Iowa is centralized enough that with the right scheduling an Iowa regional could pull in bands from eight states.

I am not super familiar with the ins and outs of the bands here, but I would assume it is the date of the show that is causing the most problems - there seem to be many existing contests that are in conflict with this show. However the fact that this show is in a dome is the MAJOR positive

Hmm...do I reserve my judgment based on my extremely limited knowledge of most of these bands, or do I take a wild swing at a placement prediction? Definitely the latter. Here we go! 1. Camdenton 2. Marian Catholic 3. Prospect 4. Grain Valley 5. Independence 6. Morton 7. Bellevue West 8. Millard North 9. Papillion La Vista 10. Davenport Central 11. Waukee Northwest 12. Millard South 13. Cedar Rapids Prairie 14. Ottumwa
I really think 3-7 could go any way, but then again, what do I know? I saw Papillion early season in 2018 and was impressed, and Independence was very entertaining at Cedar Falls 2019 (their Firebird show was easily one of my favorites). Again, I know nothing about most of these bands, but this was my two cents.

Camdenton going from their first ever super regional finals appearance not even 5 years ago to potentially winning a regional is insane to think about.

I wonder what the smallest school with a competitive marching band is? According to my records, in BOA it's Shawe Memorial H.S. from Madison, IN. They're a 7-12 private school with 175 students (roughly 88 in 10-12). They attended the Muncie Regional in 2019. In Illinois, I'm fairly certain it is Alwood, out in the western part of the state. School size of 104, according to IHSA. They competed twice in 2019. I can't think of any smaller school with a competition band in Ohio. The closest I can think of are Holgate (98 enrolled in grades 9-11 per OHSAA), who performed at some OMEA contests a few years ago, and Ottoville (91 enrolled), who was scheduled to play at a competition I attended in 2014 but withdrew. I'm not sure either of them competes anymore, or even if they really were competing at that time, or if they were just seizing a performance opportunity. That said, Holgate had qualified for state finals a number of times in the 1980s and 1990s. The smallest Ohio school whose band regularly competes now is probably Kalida (118). All three are public schools from the northwest part of the state. (The state's smallest school is Kelley's Island, with just one high school student. No band, I think.)
