Before tonight, I had DB in the 12-15 range and GN and Wando in the 6-12 range.
Now I am having trouble seeing Wando in the top 10 and DB in finals at all. I’m really hoping it’s the weather that’s causing all these musical issues because no band tonight is sounding too hot.

All these shows sounded better in prelims when the sun was shining and it was in the 60’s. These shows will be much better indoors.

The weather is definitely a problem (very very apparent in Wando), but even in Prelims it was noticeable there are issues outside of intonation. There's just so much to clean, and I think we all know if Texas showed up here today, there would have been zero problem to take at least the music caption.

I think they were AMAZING. This is their competition tonight for sure. I really wanted DB to play Appalachian Spring but they really didn’t do it for me. Wando should beat out Round Rock I feel like at finals as well.

Despite JFB is the last band to perform (in probably the coldest weather), they sound quite good!

Here we go Byrnes. This band is huge!!
Led Zeppelin music? No wayyyyyy!!!!! That’s up there with Leander and Grateful Dead. 😍 You’ll have all us 60s babies eating out of the palm of your hands.
Beautiful Stairway to Heaven ballad. I definitely think the cold is affecting them but they are pushing through and doing a great job.
Every LZ song I love is in this show. I want to see it live!
What a blast that was. Thank you James F Byrnes HS!

So did Nation Ford get a lot smaller...? Or it seems like the pandemic really affected them. The pandemic really effected them. All the Fort Mill schools took a big hit with basically nothing happening for a year. Catawba took the smallest mostly because they had the least to loose as they were only in their first year of existence anyway. Also Nation Ford lost more students to the split than Fort Mill. Give it a year or two and all three will be back to normal again.

Without recaps it’s tough to tell, but this looks very similar outcome to the 2018 Gaffney regional in regards to Wando and DB. With that said, I think both bands are in a worse position than in 2018 and are going into a stronger competitive Grand Nationals than 2018.
I think weather did play apart in some issues today (I only watched prelims) but I am not really digging either show. DB really needed to show up with a 2017 to really be considered for finals imo and while this show will be pretty come GN, it is lacking that sparkle (that choir is lovely though). Some dirt and like we’ve talked about before - this show feels so stale with the music selections that we’ve heard so many times over. Sorry!!
While we don’t have recaps yet, it seems Wando pulled ahead again based on their performance captions. Although that was here… going up against texas bands like someone said earlier - I think they’d be out done! Musically arrangement wise this show is somewhat of a departure from what they usually do. No big luscious ballad, pop music! 😳Not typical Wando. And while they’re still very good, I think it will be a challenge to make finals - but it is possible.

It looks like Hoover scored at least 6 points less than they did at Clarksville three weeks ago. I know clarksville scores felt generally high, but that's gotta be a rough blow for those kids. Just need the full recaps now... Do they usually take this long? I've always seen them like <30 minutes after things close out.

Any director worth their salt will teach their kids that scores are highly subjective and raw numbers are irrelevant from show to show when it comes to an assessment of progress. At the programs I've worked with the party line was always don't worry about score but if you have to dive in the gaps between competitors is the most telling aspect.

Congratulations to Wando on regional win number three! Looks like Dobyns-Bennett did not make this an easy win. Also have to give a shout out to Hernando MS for a really good showing. Also, looking at these posts, I am definitely going to have to find a video of Byrnes. On a side note, I noticed some comments about the cool (well cold for you southerners) weather during finals. Being from Michigan, I played a lot in cold weather. During many cold practice sessions, we were taught how to adjust our playing for the conditions. Keeping things in tune was a big challenge. We also did things standing in the cold waiting to enter the competition field to help; blowing warm air through the instruments, keeping the mouthpieces warm and moving your fingers so they didn't get numb. So I can certainly understand these southern bands not accustomed to cold conditions struggling a bit with their sound and staying in tune.

Wando's program this year is definitely a departure from their more cerebral programming style of the past 10+ years. It's a "cute" show in the style of Cirque du Soleil meets Cadets 2005 with an accessible pop tune serving as an overarching theme. The kids are great and really working hard given the circumstances of the pandemic in SC!
Unfortunately, I predict some of Wando's design choices are going to hold them back in Indy with this year's stacked lineup. The real question will be how much more GE can they max out of this show? Interested to see last night's recap and the spread in GE. I personally feel like the pacing of the show just drags after the opener and the final reprise of Sweet Dreams after the trombone feature gets a little stale. From the several videos I've seen, the backfield props that spin around in the closer do not contrast the color scheme on the front enough to really pop. Hoping they can tweak the characters/storyline and generate more impact in the back half of the show. COVID definitely prevented them from featuring more musical and visual "wow moments." Glad to see the guard is improving compared to years past and now spinning weapons. Always proud to see my state represented in finals at GNs and I see them finishing 11th or 12th this year.

Enjoyed all the band programs at Jacksonville State yesterday. Was so glad the wind had died down for finals. Happy Wando won over DB. While DB program is kind of unique with the chorus and all, I simply did not think they were on the field marching enough . Maybe five minutes of the program. That just seemed strange to me. Of course, I was really hoping Byrnes would win 😝. But all the bands were so good. Shout out for that South Jones band. Held their own with the big dogs!
