Regarding Bowie not competing in UIL area this year. Could it be because Bowie uses microphones along the sidelines? The signals from these microphones are used to bring out woodwinds and other sections when they are not front and center. I've seen them perform a few times this year and they do a great job of utilizing these microphones in a pleasant way. It allows subtle woodwind sounds to be heard from the audience. However, in UIL, microphones are not allowed to be used unless they are for small ensembles.Given how obnoxious full field miking often is, I like that rule. In 2017 Dobyns - Bennett's had probably the most atrociously mic'd woodwinds I've probably ever heard at Winston Salem. The Woodwind section was good of course, but the levels were up way too high. It can become a real problem and not an asset very quickly if bands aren't careful. However, I hardly think that would be the reason Bowie would skip UIL...

I’m not actually sure why they’re not going to state though. As with everyone else here it was a genuinely puzzling decision. Anyones guess is just as good as mine.

So does anyone know why James Bowie is skipping state? Might be the mystery of the season.
Most likely they probably just want to keep with the pattern for normal state years but I’m not sure why James Bowie would be the only band to make this decision.

The Woodlands is also skipping state I know but they’re going to Grand Nats so it makes sense

There's tons of bands that use them and it isn't hard to just not bring them. I'm sure Bowie would just rather go to a BOA contest and get their feedback and defend their title instead of UIL since Waco's judge feedback is more helpful for BOA SA. They're going to the Alamodome either way, granted it sounds better and feels great to make state but it's also (mostly) their choice to make where they go

Roma making the trip up to Waco?! That's awesome. They'll make this contest that much better. Will also be great to see how they do against the other 5A greats.

That’s nice of them, although I wish they’d have more confidence in their UIL performances. I think it’s sort of interesting how the one show that probably appeals to UIL the most is the show they’re not taking on the state route. It’s nice that they’re letting another program have a shot at state.

Bowie mom here.
James Bowie did compete at UIL region and did cut mics as usual. They received top scores.
They are missing area UIL because they took 1st place at the last Waco BOA (2019) and are the defending champion. The travel to compete at both on the same day was not feasible. They had to make a hard decision. Thus they will not be at state UIL due to missing area.
Cheers all! Wishing all bands a great day in Waco.
Edit: However the results shake out today, I’m sure we can agree in the excitement felt by the kids as a returning champ in land of endless Texas marching talent.
…..and as an all around band fan, I am super pumped to see Rouse on the field again today. Fabulous!! 🙌

Everything about that Cedar Park is show is firing on all cylinders but the ensemble visual specifically is just so well performed right now. I even think this show could break into the top half of San Antonio just off of how clean it is.
