Announced results from the two shows I attended:
University of Akron Zips Invitational (OMEA) Class C 1. Union Local (all captions)
Class B 1. Coventry (muisc, general effect, percussion) 2. Marlington (visual, guard)
Class A 1. Norton (all captions)
Class AA 1. Beavercreek (visual, guard) - I 2. Brunswick (music) - I 3. Avon (general effect - tie) - I ?. Central Crossing (general effect - tie) - I ?. Mentor - I ?. Avon Lake
No overall results are announced at this event. In Class AA, placements were only the announced for the top three, even though the awards page in the program book had spaces for all six, and even though they've announced all placements in the past at this event.
Revere H.S. 15th Annual Marching Band Invitational Class C 1. Wellington 2. New London (percussion, guard) 3. Union Local
Class B 1. Cloverleaf (percussion, guard) 2. Buckeye
Class B & C combined awards music: Cloverleaf visual: Cloverleaf general effect: Cloverleaf
Class A 1. Norton (percussion) - I (finally) 2. Copley (guard) - I 3. Franklin Heights 4. Willoughby South (announced as "participation")
Class AA 1. Beavercreek (percussion) - Grand Champion - I 2. Brunswick - Reserve G.C. - I 3. North Royalton (guard) - I 4. Nordonia - I * 5. Firestone
Class AA & A combined awards music: Beavercreek visual: Beavercreek general effect: Beavercreek
The host band, Revere (A), also received a I.
The awards for Class B and C were announced mid-show. None of those bands was announced as earning a I. That could be correct, or it could be an oversight, because in the Class AA and A awards, the announcer (game but new) initially forgot to announce the Superior ratings and was wishing us all a safe ride home when someone reminded her.
The Revere results were exactly right, in my opinion. Some of the Akron results were odd, and I've felt that way every time I've attended that competition.
*Edited to add: someone posted Nordonia's score online: Music 1: 85 Music 2: 85 Visual: 81.4 G.E. 1: 81.9 G.E. 2: 86 Overall: 83.86 (Percussion: 86) (Guard: 85.5)

I’m intrigued by all these bands scoring in the mid to upper 80’s. Doesn’t OMEA’s new scoring system only go to 100? Not much room to give higher scores if you are getting an 88 during week 1 or 2 of a six week competition season.

Not much room to give higher scores if you are getting an 88 during week 1 or 2 of a six week competition season. In OMEA, the "rating" is everything. If a judge wants to give bands a superior rating, they have to give them a number of 80 and up. So what we see happening is that a band will get a "low" superior earlier in the show and then other bands will come out and be points better than them, so judges are giving 88s and 90s. It is definitely not a perfect system, but it's much, much better than the 300 point madness that has been going on forever.

There’re going to need to leave lots of room to increase those scores as the night goes on. BTW - how do we find out the actual OMEA scores besides on this board?

Outside of this forum this year, I've seen very few scores (so I am exceedingly grateful to og2 for posting them!), and most of the score sheets I did see were shared with me on the understanding that I wouldn't share them further. Every now and again, a band will post its own scores. Yesterday I found one band's score mentioned on Youtube. Once I saw a director new to competition sharing a blurry photo of an event's scoresheet on his Facebook page.

Intrigued by those scores at the Canal Winchester show last week. Similar thoughts here. I thought Kilbourne performed extremely well at BOA this past weekend. Haven't seen any recent videos of Coffman, but if these OMEA scores translate at all to BOA, I would think they will perform much better at BOA Toledo than I anticipated.

I think there is some correlation, but it's complicated. (1) OMEA deemphasizes visual compared to BOA (and even more so this year). (2) OMEA and BOA each need room on the sheets to distinguish between different groups of bands. So a band that scores 80 in OMEA will score about 60 in BOA, but a band that scores 95 in OMEA might score anywhere from 75 to 95 in BOA. On the other hand, a band that scores 55 in BOA might score anywhere from 55-75 in OMEA. I would guess that a five-point lead by Dublin Coffmann over Worthington Kilbourne at an OMEA event is probably enough to suggest that in BOA terms, based on the performances that day, Coffmann was anywhere from a few points behind to a few points ahead of Kilbourne, but not wildly far apart from them.
Obviously it depends to some degree on the personal taste of the judges. To take a well-known example from outside of Ohio: in 2017, a significant number of people on the BOA forums were saying that Dobyns-Bennett's show was too old-fashioned to qualify for Finals, and then when DB did perform in Finals, the same folks said DB's design was clearly going to hold them to 11th or 12th. I myself wrote that "Paradisium" was one of my favorites, but tha I assumed the more knowledgeable observers were correctly intuiting the judges' tastes. Lo! Dobyns-Bennett finished sixth. The judges appreciated D-B's supposedly out-of-date approach more than the postmodernists (if not as much as I did).

How exactly is the scoring sheet broken down now for OMEA? When I was in HS, they were still on the 300 pt. system, although I honestly can't even remember how the breakdown for that was either anymore.

There is a drum and guard judge that don’t factor into the overall. This is the first year they’ve been on that system.

It will be very interesting to see the numbers management that takes place in the top box.

I am aware that some school districts intentionally avoid competing against each other for whatever reasons.

To my knowledge it’s only the second time this has ever happened since the school split in 1997. They both were at the Indy Regional a couple years ago.

I remember my surprise upon learning earlier in 2018 that both were appearing at the same event, where Lakota East's "Line, Shape & Color" scored 79.7, edging out the 79.4 earned by Lakota West's "Mary Mary, Wind's in the West" and qualifying for the finals. I actually thought West's show was technically superior, but aesthetically I definitely preferred East's show, although I didn't enjoy either band's 2018 shows as as much as I had their previous year's offerings ("Swan Song" and "The Flight of Spring," respectively).
- - - - - - - - - - I have heard that Dublin Jerome had the top score at the Buckeye Invitational in 2016 and 2018, although I've never seen that confirmed officially anywhere, so it may not be true. Personally, while Jerome is often one of my favorite Ohio bands, I felt their shows from those two years both fell a bit flat.

October 9
Mason Invitational (MSBA) 3:00 - Williamsburg (A) 3:15 - Mason County (KY) (A) 3:30 - Bishop Fenwick (A) 3:45 - Archbishop Alter (A) BREAK 4:15 - Franklin (AA) 4:30 - Madison (AA) 4:45 - South Dearborn (IN) (AA) 5:00 - Colerain (AA) 5:15 - Fairborn (AA) BREAK 5:45 - Brookville (AAA) 6:00 - Carroll (AAA) DINNER 6:45 - Springboro (AAAA) 7:00 - Lebanon (AAAA) 7:15 - Kings (AAAA) BREAK 7:45 - Milford (AAAAA) 8:00 - Mason (Exhibition)
Interesting note - Mason has been hosting an event every year since 2002 (including last year with the stadium cleared between each band). This is the smallest enrollment ever experienced (and only the fourth time at less than 20 bands). There have been a couple times that three consecutive years exceeded 30 participating bands (2014 was the highest enrollment at 39).

I found the Licking Valley line up on their Facebook page but it’s in picture form, is there a way to post a photo here? If not, guess I have to decide if I want to type them all out. 😏

I had only checked the band's Facebook page and didn't think to check the school's Facebook page. I updated the post to include that rather extensive lineup. And while I'm posting, I'll note the announced and (implied) results from Ottawa-Glandorf: Class C 1. Kalida - also best percussion and guard -- I (2. Woodmore) Class B 1. Van Buren - also best guard -- I Perkins - best percussion (Newton) Class A 1. Berne Union - also best percussion and guard -- I (2. Marion Harding) -- I (3. Lexington) -- I Overall Grand Champion: Berne Union -- also best music and general effect 2nd Place: Van Buren -- also best visual 3rd Place: Marion Harding The host band did not qualify. Berne Union also competed earlier in the day at Watkins Memorial, and I heard that the top three there were: 1. Berne Union (best general effect and tied for best music); 2. Licking Heights (best visual, percussion, and guard); 3. Hilliard Davidson (tied for best music).

I think they won Grand Champion at that show too. Teays Valley and Licking Valley had great lineups. Looking forward to seeing those results.
