(If OMEA is sharing scores now, then wouldn't it be great if they permitted the release of scores from past seasons? At least from the Buckeye Invitational? I'd love to know what Mason, Grove City, Miamisburg, etc. scored at that event in 2019, for example.) OMEA has always released scores on the recaps, you just have to be able to track them down. It always felt a little silly putting scores out of that 300 point system out there, so I didn't. To answer your question, the scores from the 2019 OSU show: Mason - 283.58 Grove City - 274.3 Miamisburg - 267.4 ohioguy2 - how about the top 5 from the 2018 OSU show. I attended that and always wondered who scored what of the top bands.

Before today, I hadn't heard about the passing on March 25 of Harry Pfingsten (1935-2021), the director of bands at Avon Lake from 1964 to 1991, and the inspiration (albeit from an earlier teaching job -- I think in Grafton) for bandmaster Harry L. Dinkle in the Funky Winkerbean comic strip. With that belated news in mind, although there is a pretty good chance of rain on Saturday afternoon, I draw your attention to the Avon Lake Band-A-Rama, which Pfingsten started in his first year teaching at that school. I believe the event was a festival rather than a competition for much of its existence, but it's been an OMEA local contest for the past few years. This year's show starts at noon and features these bands:
St. John’s Jesuit (B) St. Edward (A) Avon (AA) Amherst Steele (AA) Mentor (AA) North Royalton (AA) Avon Lake (AA; ratings only)
I've seen all these bands already this year, but it ends early enough to cover some distance and reach one of the evening shows that start at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. in central Ohio (and the weather is supposed to be clear Saturday evening).

I'd been thinking about attending that show, but hadn't seen a schedule. Sounds like nine bands there vs. fourteen at Westerville North, which starts at the same time. Although if the Dublin awards start at roughly 7:30 p.m., I could then drive a half-hour to Westerville and catch the last three or four bands.

There are ten local OMEA competitions scheduled for today, Oct. 9:
Valley H.S. (Lucasville) - 12 p.m. I couldn't find the schedule, but it will include many of the same bands appearing at Northwest later in the day.
Avon Lake H.S. -- 12 p.m. The schedule appears three posts above.
Kettering Fairmont H.S. -- 5 p.m. Lehman Catholic (C), Bethel (C), Blanchester (C), Finneytown (B), Milton-Union (B), Madeira (B), Deer Park (B), Kettering-Fairmont (Exhibition), Tippecanoe (A), Wilmington (A), Ross (A), Miamisburg (AA), Sycamore (AA), Kettering-Fairmont (AA-ratings only)
Maumee H.S. -- 5 p.m. Swanton (C), Kalida (C), Liberty-Benton (B), Avon (AA), Maumee (B-ratings only)
Meadowbrook H.S. (Byesville) -- 5 p.m. I couldn't find the schedule
Northwest H.S. (McDermott) -- 5 p.m. Symmes Valley (C), Sciotoville (C), Lynchburg-Clay (C), Rock Hill (B), Portsmouth West (B), Minford (B), Valley (C), Eastern Brown (C), Russell [WV KY] (A), Point Pleasant [WV] (A), South Point (A), Dawson-Bryant (A), Northwest (B-ratings only)
Dublin Jerome H.S. -- 5 p.m. Most of the schedule appears two posts above.
Versailles H.S. -- 5 p.m. I couldn't find the full schedule, but it includes Marion Local (C), Columbus Grove (C), Middletown (AA), and probably at least one more AA band. Awards are at 8:15 p.m.
Westerville North H.S. -- 5 p.m. Millersport (C), Madison-Plains (C), Highland (B), Big Walnut (A), Bishop Watterson (A), Hamilton Township (A), New Philadelphia (A), Westerville South (AA), Westerville Central (AA? Exh.), Olentangy (AA), Marysville (AA), Westland (AA), Westerville North (AA-ratings only)
Norton H.S. -- 6 p.m. Wellington (C), Black River (C), Indian Valley (B), Cloverleaf (B), Willoughby South (A), Crestwood (A), Revere (A), Firestone (AA), Brunswick (AA), Hoover (AA), Norton (A-ratings only)
A few notes. Yes, Kettering-Fairmont does play twice at their competition; the first time is for the Class B/C audience prior to the awards presentation for that portion of the event. Sciotoville (starting with last week's appearance at Loveland) is competing this year for the first time in a decade. Hamilton Township (near Columbus) is not the same as Hamilton (near Cincinnati), who often appear at Grand Nationals. Speaking of schools in the greater Cincinnati area, I see that Lakota West cancelled last night's football game: do they have a Covid outbreak? There is one in the Rolling Hills school district across the state; that's the district of Meadowbrook H.S., listed above, and as of Thursday, they switched to all-remote learning; does that mean their competition is cancelled?

Here are the announced results from three awards presentations I attended today:
Avon Lake H.S. -- 56th Annual Band-A-Rama -- Oct. 9, 2021 Class B 1. St. John's Jesuit -- I -- music, general effect
Class A 1. St. Edward -- I -- music, general effect
Class AA 1. Amherst Steele -- I -- music 2. North Royalton -- I -- general effect 3. Avon -- I Mentor -- I
The host band, Avon Lake, did not receive a Superior rating.
I saw all bands except St. John's Jesuit (I didn't plan for traffic and parking), and I agree with the results.
Dublin Jerome H.S. -- Dublin Band Showcase -- Oct. 9, 2021 Class C 1. Fairbanks -- percussion, guard
Class B 1. Bloom-Carroll -- I -- percussion, guard 2. Westfall
Class AA 1. Grove City -- I 2. Worthington Kilbourne -- I -- guard 3. Licking Heights -- I -- percussion
Overall Music -- Grove City Visual -- Grove City General Effect -- Grove City, Worthington Kilbourne (tie) Grand Champion: Grove City
The host bands, Dublin Jerome, Dublin Coffmann, and Dublin Scioto, each earned a Superior rating.
I saw all performances and agree with the results, except that I would have awarded G.E. to Grove City alone.
Westerville North H.S. -- Westerville Invitational -- Oct. 9, 2021 Class C and B 1. Madison-Plains -- guard 2. Highland -- percussion 3. Millersport
Class A 1. New Philadelphia -- I -- guard and percussion 2. Bishop Watterson -- I 3. Big Walnut Hamilton Township
Class AA 1. Olentangy -- I 2. Marysville -- I -- guard 3. Westland -- percussion
Overall Music -- Olentangy Visual -- Olentangy General Effect -- Olentangy Reserve Grand Champion -- Marysville Grand Champion -- Olentangy
The two competing host bands, Westerville North and Westerville South, each earned Superior ratings. The third host band, Westerville Central, does not compete and performed in exhibition.
I only arrived in time to see the last two performances, by Westland and Westerville North.
A very enjoyable day, and it didn't rain at any of the shows, only a little during my drive from Cleveland to Columbus.

I can tell that Cloverleaf (appearing at Norton, where Brunswick won) qualified for State, because their Twitter account posted just "39" on Saturday. (This year will be the 41st OMEA State Finals; Cloverleaf has qualified every year since 1982.)

OMEA Versailles 10/9 [...] Class A 1. Greenville 73.4 (II)In seven years of regularly attending multiple shows every year, I think this is the only OMEA Class A band I've never seen. Sometimes I wonder if they really exist. Their name turns up on a couple competition schedules each season, but to me they are otherwise ghosts.

At one of the shows I attended Saturday, I asked a parent who seemed pretty well-informed if she knew the score her child's band had received a couple weeks earlier (from a competition whose scores haven't made it to this forum). She said she did, but she couldn't tell me, because the band's director had told students and parents that if that information ever were to be shared publicly, the band risked disqualification.

Not to derail the conversation, but I will say for a family new to the activity I understand- the scoring of marching band is vastly different from just about any sport. My favorite is still when people say their band has "qualified" for grand nationals.

The largest "local" OMEA competition is the Buckeye Invitational, hosted by Ohio State University and starting in the 1980s. Back then, I was told that a band had to have earned a Superior rating at the state level in either marching band or concert band the previous year. I don't know if there are any such requirements these days, although there is some sort of application process and reportedly a rule against a band appearing in more than two successive years. This year's Invitational runs this Saturday, Oct. 16. There are 32 bands in OMEA adjudication and another 12 "festival" bands who presumably as in past years will receive comments only from a separate panel of judges composed of college band directors. Here is the schedule:
10:00 a.m. -- Adena (C) 10:15 a.m. -- Fort Recovery (C) 10:30 a.m. -- Covington (C) 10:45 a.m. -- Brookville (C) 11:00 a.m. -- Williamsburg (C) 11:15 a.m. -- East Clinton (C) 11:30 a.m. -- Lehman Catholic (Fest.) 11:45 a.m. -- Oak Hills (Fest.) 12:00 p.m. -- Bellefontaine (Fest.) * 12:15 p.m. -- St. Clairsville (B) 12:30 p.m. -- Van Wert (B) ** 12:45 p.m. -- Ottawa-Glandorf (B) 1:00 p.m. -- London (B) 1:15 p.m. -- Logan Elm (B) 1:30 p.m. -- Bloom Carroll (B) 1:45 p.m. -- Wapakoneta (Fest.) 2:00 p.m. -- Shelby (Fest.) 2:15 p.m. -- Westerville Central (Fest.) 2:30 p.m. -- Springfield (A) 2:45 p.m. -- Walter E. Stebbins (A) 3:00 p.m. -- Franklin Heights (A) 3:15 p.m. -- Teays Valley (A) 3:30 p.m. -- Butler (A) 3:45 p.m. -- Ross (A) 4:00 p.m. -- West Geauga (Fest.) 4:15 p.m. -- Stow-Munroe Falls (Fest.) 4:30 p.m. -- Sycamore (Fest.) *** 4:45 p.m. -- Pickerington Central (AA) 5:00 p.m. -- Delaware Hayes (AA) 5:15 p.m. -- Central Crossing (AA) 5:30 p.m. -- Hiliard Bradley (AA) 5:45 p.m. -- Beavercreek (AA) 6:00 p.m. -- Kettering Fairmont (AA) 6:15 p.m. -- Lakota West (AA) 6:30 p.m. -- Hudson (Fest.) 6:45 p.m. -- Gahanna Lincoln (Fest.) 7:00 p.m. -- Massillon Washington (Fest.) 7:15 p.m. -- Springboro (AA) 7:30 p.m. -- Marysville (AA) 7:45 p.m. -- Westland (AA) 8:00 p.m. -- Pickerington North (AA) 8:15 p.m. -- Forest Hills (AA) 8:30 p.m. -- Lakota East (AA) 8:45 p.m. -- Dublin Jerome (AA) 9:00 p.m. -- (The) Ohio State University (Exhibition) 9:30 p.m. -- awards
*Bellefontaine was a competition band through 2019. I don't know if this appearance indicates a temporary or permanent change of course. **Van Wert has not been a competition band, but they occasionally appear at OMEA events just for the experience; I've seen them once before at this show. ***Sycamore has been very much a competition band, and I'm confused as to why they're in a festival slot here.
One thing I like about this show is when festival band parents see competition band performances for the first time.
The last forecast I saw called for a decreasing chance of rain before 2 p.m. and partly cloudy after that. Update: NWS now says showers are likely to end by 9 a.m. (Two hours north in Cleveland, rain is likely both early and late on Saturday.) After a long warm spell, temperatures will revert to normal: high of 61, low of 45.

***Sycamore has been very much a competition band, and I'm confused as to why they're in a festival slot here. Mason once attended this event as festival only to get a judging "read" from a high angle perspective on their show. I do not recall the year. That was related to how the show as currently constituted would look and sound in a BOA environment. As Sycamore isn't doing any BOA events this year (or any verified MSBA shows for that matter), it may well be that with the lost season in 2020 the band is focusing on development this year.

Mason went Festival Class that season you reference partially because they did not have enough of their show on the field at that point and would have gotten a timing penalty. They still wanted to give their students the performance opportunity and the higher up read as you mentioned. Mason did have enough on in 2019 so they competed (and won). Sycamore has been at two OMEA events this year (Hamilton and Kettering) and chose not to compete at either. They went “Ratings Only” at both. I’m not sure why they are doing that, but maybe they just feel they’re not up to their usual standard.

Some OMEA scores for you. […] A score of 80 or higher from an individual judge is a superior rating. If a band gets two superiors (this year), they get an overall superior and qualify for the state finals. […] OMEA Tippecanoe 9/11/21 -Newton - 68.52 (II) -Columbus Grove - 69.92 (II) -Marion Local - 64.26 (III) OMEA Hilliard 9/11/21 -Westfall - 64.56 (III - timing penalty lowered to IV) -Madison-Plains - 69.1 (II - timing penalty lowered to III) -Fairbanks - 66.2 (II - timing penalty lowered to III) OMEA Licking Heights 9/11/21 -Crooksville - 68.86 (II) OMEA Logan Elm 9/18/21 -Circleville - 67.92 (III) -Westfall - 63.5 (III) -East Clinton - 68.5 (II - penalty lowered to III) -Madison-Plains - 66.83 (III) OMEA Wilmington - 9/18/21 -Tecumseh - 67.3 (III) -Lynchburg-Clay - 65.09 (III - penalty lowered to IV) OMEA Canal Winchester 9/18/21 -Meigs - 69.22 (II) OMEA Rock Hill 9/18/21 -Wellston - 69.52 (II) -Symmes Valley - 68.24 (III) OMEA Cambridge 9/18/21 -River View - 68.86 (III) -Morgan - 68.176 (II) OMEA Akron 9/25/21 -Marlington - 68.92 (II) -Union Local - 67.6 (II) OMEA Columbus Grove 9/25/21 -Elgin 68.1 (II) OMEA Hamilton 9/25/21 -Waynesville - 69.98 (II - penalty lowered to III) -National Trail - 63.48 (III) OMEA Pickertington 9/25/21 -Minford - 68.5 (II) -Northwest - 66.5 (II) OMEA Troy 9/25/21 Northeastern - 64.7 (III - penalty lowered to IV) OMEA Zanesville 9/25/21 -Marietta 67.582 (III) -Coshocton 66.338 (III) OMEA Watkins Memorial 10/2/21 -Millersport 68.3 (II) OMEA Northwestern 10/2/21 -Northeastern 67.06 (II) -National Trail 67.00 (III) -Bethel 64.9 (III) OMEA Teays Valley 10/2/21 -Adena 68.66 (II) OMEA Licking Valley 10/2/21 -New London 68.002 (II) -Millersport 62.258 (III) OMEA Loveland 10/2/21 -Sciotoville 65.0 (III) -Northeastern 62.9 (III, penalty lowered to IV) OMEA Dublin 10/9/21 -Westfall 67.32 (III) OMEA Kettering Fairmont 10/9/21 -Bethel 68.86 (III) -Lehman Catholic 62.2 (III) OMEA Meadowbrook 10/9/21 -Union Local 69.588 (II) OMEA Northwest 10/9/21 -Sciotoville 68.8 (II) OMEA Valley 10/9/21 -Sciotoville 69.9 (II) OMEA Versailles 10/9 -Tecumseh 69.0 (III) -Mississinawa Valley 64.4 (III) OMEA Westerville 10/9 -Millersport 66.9 (II) Quick question: for an individual judge, what's the cut-off between III and II (and between IV and III, and between V and IV)? I believe it used to be:
I = 80-100 II = 70-79.99 III = 60-69.99 IV = 50-59.99 V = 0-49.99
Is that the case this year?

These are the types of results that make me roll my eyes and "lol" every time I see/hear "OMEA" I saw all the performances today, and while I disagree with a number of these placements and scores (and one in particular), I don't think they're so unreasonable. First place in Class A, B, and C all match my take, and the scores are fairly close too (Covington should have been higher). I'd reorder the top six in Class AA, and the highest scores there should be higher, but that top six was my top six too. And there are at least two results that are very gratifying to me: one band not placing as high as I feared the judges might put them (in fact, that band ended up one place lower than I had them), and the band that I consider to be the epitome of OMEA style placing in the top ten, which they completely deserved based on that show. Anyway, here are the announced results, which is all that the audience at the show knew: Class CMusic: Covington General Effect: East Clinton Visual: Brookville Percussion: East Clinton Guard: East Clinton Bands earning a Superior: Covington Class BMusic: Bloom-Carroll General Effect: Bloom-Carroll Visual: St. Clairsville Percussion: Bloom-Carroll Guard: St. Clairsville Bands earning a Superior: St. Clairsville, Logan Elm, Bloom-Carroll Class AMusic: Teays Valley General Effect: Teays Valley Visual: Teays Valley Percussion: Teays Valley Guard: Walter E. Stebbins Bands earning a Superior: Springfield, Walter E. Stebbins, Franklin Heights, Teays Valley, Ross Class AAMusic: Lakota East General Effect: Lakota East Visual: Lakota East Percussion: Forest Hills Guard: Pickerington North Bands earning a Superior: Pickerington Central, Delaware Hayes, Central Crossing, Hilliard Bradley, Beavercreek, Kettering Fairmont, Lakota West, Springboro, Marysville, Westland, Pickerington North, Forest Hills, Lakota East, Dublin Jerome So the audience was in the dark as to, for example, who placed second, third, fourth in AA. As I see it, every band who deserved a Superior received one, and only a few bands who didn't deserve a Superior received one, but given that they've made it easier this year for bands to accomplish that, it's not suprising.

OMEA Copley High School - 10/16
Class B/C 1. Van Buren (B) (percussion, guard, general effect, visual) - I 2. Perkins (B) (music) - I 3. Black River (C) - I 4. Buckeye (B) 5. Indian Valley (B) 6. Marlington (B) Participation: Arcadia (C)
Class A 1. Norton (percussion, general effect, visual) - I 2. Louisville (guard, music) - I 3. St. Edward - I 4. Lexington - I Participation: Willoughby South - I
Class AA 1. Amherst Steele - I 2. Medina (percussion, guard, music, general effect) - I 3. Nordonia (visual) - I
No overall awards
Grand Champion: Amherst Steele Reserve Grand Champion: Medina
Crowd (and bands) were quite shocked by Amherst winning without taking any captions, given that Medina took four of the five. It was especially surprising given that the announcer had forgotten to announce the Visual caption winner before placements, so it appeared that Medina had swept before somehow ending up in 2nd.
This is the first time Amherst Steele has had an undefeated season, per the director.
