OMEA Copley High School - 10/16 [...] Class AA 1. Amherst Steele - I 2. Medina (percussion, guard, music, general effect) - I 3. Nordonia (visual) - I [...] Crowd (and bands) were quite shocked by Amherst winning without taking any captions, given that Medina took four of the five. It was especially surprising given that the announcer had forgotten to announce the Visual caption winner before placements, so it appeared that Medina had swept before somehow ending up in 2nd. This is the first time Amherst Steele has had an undefeated season, per the director. While I would have had Brunswick ahead of Amherst at the Perkins show last month, it was a close call (I see that I wrote "depends on judges" in my notes). It's a good old-fashioned show, and the better of the two Latin shows presented by AA bands this year. Lots of interesting information in those results -- thanks for sharing!

OMEA Ohio State 10/16 Class A 1. Teays Valley 88.35 (I) 2. Ross 81.81 (I) I was sitting next to a Teays Valley dad for all six Class A performances. Ross was last to play in that group. They're big for their class and the music is generally familiar and catchy (including even a bit of the "Star-Spangled Banner"). He was impressed and turned to me and asked, "Did Teays just get beat?" Oh no, I replied: it wasn't even close. Which is in part to say: directors and adjudicators could do a lot more to educate the audience about what gets rewarded and why. We need some bands who have scored well and some who have scored poorly to work with their circuits to release some videos of performances with the some intelligent judges' commentary attached, warts and all. It would do some good. The numbers don't mean much to most observers.

Other notes I had on the show:
St. John's Jesuit lost a I rating due to a penalty. I was told by a parent at the Avon Lake show that this happened because of a timing issue.
Wellington was extremely impressive to me. This is the only band I have seen in person with less than 20 members (a total of 19).
Judges in the same caption seemed to wildly disagree at times. For example, St. John's Jesuit received a 90.0 in Music 1 and a 76.0 in Music 2.
In addition, I thank you for your compliments towards Amherst Steele! I was a member there from 2015-18, and I have been hooked on the marching arts since.

Thanks so much for that! It's great to get all that detail. I figured St. John's was penalized. (As was Norton the week earlier at Cloverleaf, which a Norton parent confirmed for me a couple weeks later at Revere.) I was really impressed by their performance, which though clearly under time seemed like a big improvement on their prior years' shows. I had them at 81, so it's gratifying to see their pre-penalty score was 81.7. As for Wellington, it's fascinating that they beat Ada in music and visual, and with scores good enough to get them three Superior ratings (so that they would have qualified even in a regular non-Covid year; this year a band only needs two Superior ratings), but their general effect scores had them at fifth out of five Class C bands, so that, as the audience confusedly noticed, they finished in second while qualifying for State, but Ada finished first while failing to qualify. (Wellington has been a tiny band for years, but they've frequently managed to turn in Superior performances. Their 2015 and 2016 shows especially were highly enjoyable. And there was an even smaller band at the Buckeye Invitational this year: Lehman Catholic performed in exhibition with just 16.) Turning to Brunswick, while best general effect wasn't awarded, I see that the narrowly took that category. Amherst thus won entirely on their very strong music scores. Pretty impressive for a band with no flutes or clarinets! But here's something strange: Woodmore did perform at Perkins. I have notes. I even have photographs! They did a Star Wars show. They had five backfield posters with various characters' helmets. It was a rough performance, I thought. I personally had them last in Class C with a low III, at about 62 points. My guess is that they knew they weren't ready and asked for comments only, with no scores or ratings.

I figured they had not attended when I could not spot their bus or any band members and they weren't even announced as having participated. I missed the first two bands at Perkins, so that explains it. Perhaps they left early? I'm not sure.

These are the types of results that make me roll my eyes and "lol" every time I see/hear "OMEA" I saw all the performances today, and while I disagree with a number of these placements and scores (and one in particular), I don't think they're so unreasonable. First place in Class A, B, and C all match my take, and the scores are fairly close too (Covington should have been higher). I'd reorder the top six in Class AA, and the highest scores there should be higher, but that top six was my top six too. And there are at least two results that are very gratifying to me: one band not placing as high as I feared the judges might put them (in fact, that band ended up one place lower than I had them), and the band that I consider to be the epitome of OMEA style placing in the top ten, which they completely deserved based on that show. Anyway, here are the announced results, which is all that the audience at the show knew: Class CMusic: Covington General Effect: East Clinton Visual: Brookville Percussion: East Clinton Guard: East Clinton Bands earning a Superior: Covington Class BMusic: Bloom-Carroll General Effect: Bloom-Carroll Visual: St. Clairsville Percussion: Bloom-Carroll Guard: St. Clairsville Bands earning a Superior: St. Clairsville, Logan Elm, Bloom-Carroll Class AMusic: Teays Valley General Effect: Teays Valley Visual: Teays Valley Percussion: Teays Valley Guard: Walter E. Stebbins Bands earning a Superior: Springfield, Walter E. Stebbins, Franklin Heights, Teays Valley, Ross Class AAMusic: Lakota East General Effect: Lakota East Visual: Lakota East Percussion: Forest Hills Guard: Pickerington North Bands earning a Superior: Pickerington Central, Delaware Hayes, Central Crossing, Hilliard Bradley, Beavercreek, Kettering Fairmont, Lakota West, Springboro, Marysville, Westland, Pickerington North, Forest Hills, Lakota East, Dublin Jerome So the audience was in the dark as to, for example, who placed second, third, fourth in AA. As I see it, every band who deserved a Superior received one, and only a few bands who didn't deserve a Superior received one, but given that they've made it easier this year for bands to accomplish that, it's not suprising. N.E. Brigand - you dangled a carrot - I’ll bite 😏. How would you have ordered the top 6?

OMEA Ironton 10/16 Class AA 1. South Point 88.5 (GC, I) Is this correct? I thought South Point competed in class B in OMEA. Way down in the southern tip of Ohio, there are a number of small schools with competition bands, but no large schools that compete (or maybe no large schools at all). So the bands at the contests in that corner of the state often choose to compete up a class or two in shows there.
You occasionally see that elsewhere: Berne Union is Class C but regularly competes (and wins) in Class A and this week will compete (but probably not win) in Class AA. But that's because they're really good for their size and want to compete directly against bigger schools. Likewise Newton and Marion Local and some others used to do that back in the 1980s and 1990s. (In the past decade, Newton still sometimes would compete as Class A.) But down in Lawrence and Scioto counties, I think they do it mostly just for variety's sake.

I hope you'll pardon a quick historical digression, but after re-watching a few of Saturday's performances on Youtube, the algorithm suggested a 1993 performance by one of those bands, which prompted me to look up some scores from that year, where I saw that the BOA's Toledo regional from Oct. 2, 1993 featured 30 bands from four states -- but mostly Ohio (14) and Michigan (13) -- and had these Finals results:
1. -- 85.95 -- Lake Park, IL (Music, Visual, GE) 2. -- 81.50 -- Westerville South, OH 3. -- 79.65 -- Jenison, MI 4. -- 79.10 -- Norwin, PA 5. -- 77.55 -- Beavercreek, OH 6. -- 68.80 -- Mona Shores, MI 7. -- 67.40 -- Miamisurg, OH 8. -- 66.15 -- Carroll, OH 9. -- 65.20 -- McDowell, PA 10. -- 63.50 -- Plymouth-Canton, MI
Fascinating to think about what's changed and what hasn't. Bands who didn't make Finals included Bellbrook and Milford. The tenth place score in Prelims was 75.70. Plymouth-Canton was 8th in Prelims with 78.8. I can't imagine a band today dropping 15 points between performances. (It was Beavercreek whose video I watched, from a different 1993 event. They played the music of Santana that year. In the Toledo Finals they were second in music performance overall and first in ensemble music performance.)

Plymouth-Canton was 8th in Prelims with 78.8. I can't imagine a band today dropping 15 points between performances. I feel like there has to be a story here... they absolutely tanked down to 10s in a few sub-captions. Something must have gone horribly wrong in finals, even with the harsher judging.

ohioguy2 - how about the top 5 from the 2018 OSU show. I attended that and always wondered who scored what of the top bands. Top 5 1. Dublin Jerome 273.725 2. Pickerington North 273.6 3. Kettering Fairmont 273.2 4. Beavercreek 270.45 5. Fairfield 267.8 Dublin Jerome scored a 280.05 three weeks later at the final regular season show of 2018, and that was apparently the only time in their history that they ever broke 280. (At least to that point. But I don't think their 2019 show would have done so -- although I loved their take on "With a Little Help from My Friends." And from now on, no band will ever break 280. But Lakota East broke 280/3 on Saturday.)

So I just found one contest lineup not because the host band has bothered to post it, but because the booster organization's Facebook page noted that the t-shirt vendor won't be on site tomorrow. That led me to the vendor's page, with a picture of the shirt, which lists all the participating bands.

Add: Firestone Fort Frye St. Clairsville Maybe: Medina New Philadelphia's booster facebook page says that 20 bands will be in attendance. Thanks! I went to Lancaster in the morning and then this show in the evening. But there was a disappointing twist for me. Even now, OMEA's page says that the New Philadelphia show was scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The Lancaster show ended at about 1:50 p.m. It's a one hour 50 minute drive from there to New Philadephia. Since I had more than three hours, I took my time. Stopped for lunch. Stopped at a farmer's market. Stopped briefly at Tri-Valley H.S. in Dresden, about halfway to my destination, just to buy a copy of the program for the competition at that site. And I got to New Philadelphia right at 5 p.m. In time to find I had missed six bands, because they changed the start time to 3:30 p.m. And that isn't noted anywhere online. I asked about this at the table where they were selling programs. Oh yes, they said, the New Philadelphia band's website had become defunct and would eventually need to be relaunched. It was still very much worth attending. The mac & cheese is good. They had grape pie! and I saw performances by 13 of 19 bands. I'll copy the full lneup into my post above.

Here are the announced results from two OMEA competitions I attended today:
Lancaster H.S. -- Band of Gold Invitational -- Oct. 23, 2021 Class C 1. Belpre -- guard, percusion -- I 2. Millersport
Class B 1. Gallia Academy -- guard, percussion Fairfield Union performed in exhibition.
Class B/C Grand Champion: Belpre
There were no bands in Class A.
Class AA 1. Berne Union -- I 2. Pickerington Central -- I 3. Dublin Jerome (guard) -- I Olentangy Liberty -- I Canal Winchester -- I Reynoldsburg (percussion) -- I Watkins Memorial -- I
Class AA/A Grand Champion: Berne Union
Overall Music: Berne Union Visual: Berne Union General Effect: Dublin Jerome
The host band, Lancaster (AA), also received a Superior rating.
I saw all performances. I'm very fond of Berne Union's show. And I quite admire Pickerington Central's deconstructing Sousa concept.
But no.
New Philadelphia H.S. -- 46th Annual Field Competition -- Oct. 23, 2021 Class C 1. Union Local -- percussion 2. Fort Frye -- guard 3. Coshocton 4. Crestview
Class B 1. St. Clairsville -- percussion -- I 2. Highland -- I 3. Cambridge -- I 4. Indian Valley -- I 5. Marlington 6. Meadowbrook -- guard
Class B/C Music -- St. Clairsville Visual -- Highland General Effect -- St. Clairsville
Class A 1. Revere -- percussion, guard -- I 2. Cloverleaf -- I 3. Lexington -- I 4. Crestwood -- I
Class AA 1. Grove City -- percussion -- I 2. Nordonia -- I 3. Medina -- guard -- I 4. Hoover -- I 5. Firestone
Class AA/A Music -- Grove City Visual -- Grove City General Effect -- Grove City
No grand champion is named at this event.
The host band, New Philadelphia (A), apparently performed in exhibition only. (They had previously qualified for State Finals and didn't need a rating here.)
I missed the first six performances (Fort Frye, Coshocton, Crestview, Union Local, Highland, Indian Valley) because the show time was listed incorrectly. I am largely in agreement with the judges regarding the thirteen performances I did see, except that I would have switched Medina and Nordonia. First place was undeniable. For sheer musical quality, that was one of the best OMEA performances I've ever heard, and that includes the (outstanding) performances last week by this year's BOA Obetz champion and BOA Toledo runner-up.

OMEA Piqua 10/16 [...]Wilmington 81.3 (I) Based on that, my guess is that Wilmington's score at Indianapolis this weekend will be in the range of 57-62. Not quite: 56.55. In other OMEA vs. BOA results, I had Beavercreek ahead of Pickerington North in the Buckeye Invitational, but the OMEA judges did not. At Indianapolis, it was Beavercreek 71.05 vs. Pickerington North 69.125. On the other hand, I also had Beavercreek narrowly edging out Kettering Fairmont at OSU, but BOA this weekend scored them 72.725. All that said, either these scores are all too low or the scores at the 2019 Grand Nationals were too high. Because no way are any of these three bands currently delivering shows that are 3-6 points behind the G.N. 2019 performance of Norton (76.95) or in the same range as the G.N. performance of Stebbins 2019 (70.35). On the other other hand, the Worthington Kilbourne I saw two weeks ago at Dublin -- after their strong finish at BOA Obetz, mind you -- wasn't anywhere near in quality what those three bands delivered a week later, but at Indianapolis, Kilbourne scored 75.85.

It appears that one long-running streak extended into a 41st year tonight. Although arguably all such streaks were broken in 2020.
Also it seems I'm finally going to get to see Greenville.
I hope we get to see some of this week's scores (including those from the shows I attended)!
