There really is no way to compare year to year, show to show. Beaver creek is thoroughly enjoyable but a lot dirtier than Norton 2019 was. So the question of the size of the gap is legitimate but since these judges are placing bands in a box and then affixing a score based on band to band comparison, you are going to have variances from show to show. Definitely would never compare OMEA to BOA. BOA does a much better job evaluating demand and design than OMEA. Why a Medina or Amherst would not score well at BOA.

So here’s why looking at past years numbers don’t always allow you to predict current numbers.
In 2019, there were more groups competing in prelims, which you might think would lead to a wider spread of numbers, but they were well over the threshold for a 2 panel prelims, and therefore there are more numbers available between the two panels. This year with one panel, none of the numbers can be used more than once, and while you can use half numbers, with 64 groups, there are a minimum of 32 points available to each judge. Of course if they want to create spreads between groups, they can use more than 32 points. If you imagine the top groups are around a 90, then the highest score you can give out for the lowest group in your caption is going to be a 58.
When you have 84 groups on two panels, now each judge is looking at 42 groups and the minimum spread from top to bottom shrinks to 21. Basically what this means is that scores in the bottom half this year should be expected to be lower than in 2019 and other years that had two panel super regionals.
It’s the same reason that groups can score significantly lower at Grand Nationals than they did a month earlier, even though they are clearly better. Numbers management and contrast dynamics especially at big BOA events are incredibly difficult to manage. All things considered, I think they do a fairly good job.
I love that people use algorithms to try to predict scores, but sometimes things like one or two panel judges will affect scores in a significant way. I’m sure there’s a way to factor this in, but it seems to get overlooked.

Thanks! I certainly don't use algorithims (although I enjoy watching others employ them), and I do understand numbers management. But all that shows is that the scores as given aren't tied very closely to an underlying reality, which we each have to seek for ourselves.

Oh for sure! A 71 isn’t the same year to year or week to week. Even panel to panel most of the time

Not quite: 56.55. In other OMEA vs. BOA results, I had Beavercreek ahead of Pickerington North in the Buckeye Invitational, but the OMEA judges did not. At Indianapolis, it was Beavercreek 71.05 vs. Pickerington North 69.125. On the other hand, I also had Beavercreek narrowly edging out Kettering Fairmont at OSU, but BOA this weekend scored them 72.725. All that said, either these scores are all too low or the scores at the 2019 Grand Nationals were too high. Because no way are any of these three bands currently delivering shows that are 3-6 points behind the G.N. 2019 performance of Norton (76.95) or in the same range as the G.N. performance of Stebbins 2019 (70.35). On the other other hand, the Worthington Kilbourne I saw two weeks ago at Dublin -- after their strong finish at BOA Obetz, mind you -- wasn't anywhere near in quality what those three bands delivered a week later, but at Indianapolis, Kilbourne scored 75.85. I was looking at those BOA scores and saw that Pickerington North went from 21st in 2019 to 38th yesterday. Something must have gone wrong for them in prelims. Even when considering different shows, that’s a crazy drop.

Very low GE this year... might just be a transitional year from the pandemic for them. It also looks like there aren't as many band members as usual.

Mason absolutely destroyed Grove City in 2019 at the Buckeye Invitational, and Grove City is probably the biggest OMEA powerhouse in Ohio. Lakota East has been performing in OMEA longer than BOA and only recently found success in the past half-decade in BOA. Now they won the 2021 Buckeye Invitational with a convincing lead over multiple OMEA powerhouse bands, as well as placing near the top of regionals, qualifying as GN semi-finalists, and SR finalists. Dublin Coffman also had decent success the first half-decade of entering BOA, although for whatever reason (which I have a lot of thoughts on, but i'll save it for another time...), they've really been struggling to achieve the same success for the later half-decade. Vice-versa, IMO, Grove City actually performed very admirably in their 2019 trip to Indy, but BOA really exposed huge visual weaknesses in their program. If anything, I think the conclusion would be OMEA doesn't evaluate visual performance and GE to a high enough scrutiny as BOA.

The OMEA State Marching Band Finals schedule has been posted. Four days as usual (Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 6-7). As a reminder, this is not a competition. It's just ratings only. Essentially the idea is that bands get a chance to prove they deserved to qualify in the first place.
Three different locations, also as usual. Oct. 30 is in Hilliard (a suburb of Columbus, i.e., in the middle of the state). Oct. 31 and Nov. 7 are in Dayton, to appeal to bands in the southwest part of the state. And Nov. 6 is in Medina (a new location this year; it used to be Brunswick), which is in northeast Ohio.
The first day, Oct. 30, is the longest, with 44 bands. With an awards break after every six bands, that means the day runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. The other days are shorter. There are 27 bands on Oct. 31 (1:15-9:00 p.m.), 25 bands on Nov. 6 (12:15-7:30 p.m.), and 29 bands on Nov. 7 (1:00-9:15 p.m.). So that's 125 bands in all. That's close to the average in the years before the pandemic, but remember that OMEA made it easier this year to qualify.
Also this year, they're live streaming.
Later I'll try to get the full schedule up.

I found a PDF of the program online and it has them. Strange!

Does William Mason ever compete in local shows? I'm not very familiar with the Ohio band scene, but it seems like I seldom see them in non-BOA discussions.

Very rarely they will participate in an OMEA event. In 2019, they competed in OMEA's Buckeye Invitational and won handily over Grove City and Miamisburg, in that order.

Part of the reason you don't see them in other discussions is that MSBA events don't draw much attention outside of the circuit. Occasionally you'll see something if, for example, Centerville beats Mason at MSBA Championships.

OMEA Lancaster 10/23 [...] Thanks for all the OMEA scores you've provided this year! It's been very helpful knowing these details! Even, or especially, when I attended the show and don't agree with the results.
(Here's hoping the Swanton results cross your path. Very curious to know the spread between North Royalton and Van Buren.)

But I had Dublin Jerome at 91 at that late morning/early afternoon show, close to the 90.52 score they posted that evening at the Worthington competition. And a week earlier at the Buckeye Invitational, I had Dublin Jerome at 90.5, while the judges scored them 90.7. That's a weird see-saw. Jerome definitely didn't seem four points worse to me at Lancaster than they did at OSU! In fact, I thought they were better. Lancaster was my third viewing of their show, and the first time I could hear the solo trumpet playing to the backfield at the end.

Marion Local, Newark, and Troy are the only bands to qualify for every year of OMEA Finals since that event was launched in 1980. This is the 41st time for each of them. But I think maybe it's time to start a new count. Not only was there a gap year due to Covid-19, but also OMEA instituted a new adjudication system this year.
And I think it might take longer than 40 years from 2021 for the consecutive finalists to winnow down to just three bands. In 1980, there were fewer than one-third as many local OMEA competitions as there have been in most recent years, and thus fewer opportunities for bands to qualify. Several other bands have qualified every year since 1981.

Some notes as the day goes along:
1:50 PM: Rough go for Norton. From the two times I saw them this season, they seemed to lack the competitive power they had pre-COVID. First 2 for them since 2014.
7:05 PM: VERY surprised to see Canal Winchester get a 2. This is the second state performance in a row that I was certain they'd earned a 1 and instead earned a 2.
8:20 PM: Show was delayed right before Olentangy Liberty's performance due to venue electrical issues. Running approximately 20 minutes behind now.
9:00 PM: Franklin Heights receives their first 2 since 2002.
11:17 PM: And that's day 1 of OMEA SMBF finished. In all, 34 bands received a rating of 1, and 10 received a rating of 2. State continues tomorrow at Dayton Welcome Stadium with Chesapeake High School at 1:15 PM.

Some notes as the day goes along: 1:50 PM: Rough go for Norton. From the two times I saw them this season, they seemed to lack the competitive power they had pre-COVID. First 2 for them since 2014. 7:05 PM: VERY surprised to see Canal Winchester get a 2. In all, 34 bands received a rating of 1, and 10 received a rating of 2. State continues tomorrow at Dayton Welcome Stadium with Chesapeake High School at 1:15 PM. Were you there or watching online? I arrived too late for Licking Valley but saw the rest in person. It rained off and on, and it was coming down heavily enough to prevent me from taking notes for Bloom-Carroll and Westerville North in the morning, for Dublin Scioto and Avon in the late afternoon, and for Canal Winchester and Westland in the early evening. Fortunately I'd seen all six bands before and could scratch down some thoughts later. All in all a very good day, and I had no serious disagreements with the judges. Lots of edge cases that might have gone a different way with different panels (there were three panels today). I would have given Superior ratings to Norton and Franklin Heights, but I can also understand the judges not doing so. In 2019, I didn't care for Canal Winchester's show but thought the judges would like it more than I did and was surprised when they got a II. This year I thought they were right on the line between I and II. If it's any consolation to Norton: in 2014, one week after they quite correctly received a II at State, they qualified for Semis in Class A at Grand Nationals and scored a 71.2, just .05 behind Alter. (Apparently they'll be Class AA this year, but that wouldn't be a score for a such a small band to sneeze at. And I think they could clean up that well in the next two weeks.) Too tired now, but tomorrow I'll try to list how I'd rank the 33 bands I saw.
