Congrats to Lynchburg-Clay for their Superior rating! This is only their second state finals appearance, with the first being in 1989 (also a Superior rating). They were the only band this year to receive a IV (albeit due to penalties) at any competition and still end up qualifying for state, so it is rather impressive that they earned a I today.

And with that, OMEA SMBF 2021 has come to an end. A total of 85 Is and 40 IIs, meaning we had an extremely superior heavy year, with 68.0% of participants receiving superior ratings.
In fact, having done the math before, I can say that this year had the largest ratio of superior ratings to total performing bands. The record was previously held by the 2009 SMBF, which had 70 Is and 44 IIs, good for 61.4% of ratings being superiors.
For the curious, the year with the least superior ratings in proportion to total bands in attendance was the event's first occurrence in 1980. That year's SMBF resulted in 11 Is, 24 IIs, and a single III. In other words, 30.56% of bands received a I at state in 1980.
The running average percentage of superior ratings at state is 49.61%, though the ratio has only dipped below this average once since 2005 (in 2014, which is a pretty massive statistical outlier in recent years), indicating that bands are generally receiving more superior ratings than they used to.
Oh, and please take these numbers with a grain of salt. I could have made massive errors calculating all of these two years ago.

Only one Class C band earned a Superior in 2014 (the first year I attended all four days). I thought that five should have done so. The first day of SMBF that year was just miserable. Temperatures peaked in the 40s and a strong wind blew most of the day. It even knocked out stadium power briefly, I was later told by someone who worked for the official videographer (although nobody in the stands knew it, because it happened while an unamplified band was playing).

My freshman year was the 2015 season, but I was told terrible things about that first day of state in 2014. It reflects in the sound of the bands that played that day, including ours. (I'm told that with the terrible show design and performances that year, our Superior rating was a gift. With the knowledge that the judging was very harsh and the weather was terrible, it seems that it was nothing short of a miracle.)

Well, for my part, it was clear (as I froze in the stands all day) that Steele had earned a Superior -- but in musical terms, it was a rather over-emphatic show. Subsequent years have been more nuanced musically.

We always seemed to have a relatively rough year every three seasons.

Recaps from the last day of State are out, and it appears Waynesville was also quite close to receiving a III. A score of 14 would result in a 3 this year. Waynesville earned a 12. This is the same score Marion Local received last Sunday.

Where do they show up in there? Yep! I'm assuming you've already found the guide for this year's SMBF (if anyone is having trouble, search for "2021 OMEA State Marching Band Finals"). I can see them by tapping the three lines in the top left corner and then tapping "2021 Final Ratings Recaps" on the left side. If you can't find them, I can try to type them out later (I tried sending a picture a few days ago, but it didn't seem to work).
