Carmel, Carroll, Franklin Central, and Greenfield-Central will be in Dayton for the BOA regional. Legitimate chance to have 4 schools in finals.
After seeing Franklin Central at Lawrence Central, I'd say there is even more of a good chance of it. They'll need to put on a bit more of their show though as they only had about 3 and a half minutes on the field.

To which all of those are also pretty sparse. I know a lot of groups though are using the weekend as a mini camp to try to finish up their shows or clean a bit more. And then some of the Indy groups are coming to the Dayton regional.

I mean, I don't know the financial workings of running an invitational, but can you break even with 5 bands? Especially when you're talking two scholastic class B and a class D, which likely aren't bringing in huge crowds.

And yet our beloved band is doing neither. Ahem.
Mini band camp. You of all people I would think, think they need it 😜

Are they? Their schedule has students serving dumplings. No practice listed.
They are not having a camp this weekend. Over the past several years they have had trouble filling all of the Johnny Appleseed Festival slots so this year students are required to work. Seems like they should be practicing instead, but I guess since this is a huge fundraiser for the band, they are prioritizing the festival. I am curious to see how well the band is able to clean this season with the reduction in practice days.

Oof. That's right. The festival. Completely forgot about that and really I shouldn't have since I live in this city lol. And yeah, they honestly probably need all hands since they really lost out on practically all fundraising last year. Better to get your finances in order and prepare for future success instead of short-term gains. Good on them thinking ahead. But I agree the lack of Monday practices does make me a little iffy on some things. Curious if this was an education thing, Covid related, or something else.

My understanding is that the removal of Monday practices is a long term change, and was decided before Covid was even a thought in our minds. Originally it was going to be implemented to allow rest and curb late season sickness. While technically they aren't missing out on practice time (they added the Monday practice length to the other 4 days of the week) having that extra day in my opinion is beneficial. I know there have been several Tuesday/Thursday practices that have been all inside and dismissed early due to storms. Add a football Friday and the band only had 2 full days of practice that week. Not ideal in my opinion.

Does the reduction in practice days make them an outlier among their peers? How many days do bands "need" to practice? Most bands I know practice 2 or 3 nights/week and the occasional Friday depending on football games.

It's not COVID related. They released that schedule (no Mondays) before covid came around. I'm really not sure what the thought process is here, but yeah, I'm pretty skeptical. Mr. Barber was allegedly at the competition last weekend. He was probably about to bust a vein in his neck. (He was supposed to go to a Doobie Brothers concert, but that was cancelled so he went to the band competition. I'm not kidding.)

It is interesting to compare how much practice each band has. Historically, Homestead had been a full week practice band. That has now changed, so it will be interesting to see if that impacts the final outcome. The impacts of Covid doesn't help.

I actually sat very close to him! While we will never know what his personal thoughts in his mind are/were, he did tell people publicly that this is an amazing show this year lol.

It is a very good show, and I'd not expect Mr. Barber to say anything else. He's a 100% class man. But you know he was internally looking at all that dirt thinking...DO IT AGAIN!

And look, Texas is relegated to 8 hours max practice time outside of school so if they can be great with those restrictions, no reason why Homestead can't be too. Far to early to cry sky is falling. 🙃 It is good to know, as Alex pointed out, that they did add that extra time into the other practices. Honestly, at least on the surface, having a day to recoup can definitely be a good thing and avoid burnout too. Sadly, I didn't see Mr. Barber at LC.

I was once told by a very wise man that once you retire, walk away and stay away.
More transitions are blown up by the people leaving not letting go than the people who followed them screwing it up.
