Bourbon County coming out of left field with a fourth place finish above Franklin! We will see how their show continues to develop, if they continue on this track it could just be their best season yet. Franklin had a bit of a misstep but it’s only September 21st. They have time to improve

I didn't think Bourbon would finish Franklin, but I'm not surprised at all. They were on fire all day.
I'm actually really interested in the recaps because the bands that advanced had complete shows. Most were still working with a good portion of their shows missing.

Franklin got bumped down to 5th due to a penalty. At least a full point, if that's the case. Especially at the early events, BOA tries to avoid assessing penalties.

Franklin got bumped down to 5th due to a penalty. 1.2 points. Franklin would've been ahead by 0.25. Not great, but not really quite out of the loop as the score would've suggested.

And franklin in 5th ouch... I think castle is should be closer to north Hardin but they’re surly deserve second. Carmels show is still very much a work in progress The major issues that North Hardin lost a lot of ground on were: Music Ensemble (Castle 16.40 to NH 15.60) Visual Ind. (Castle 16.00 to NH 15.50) Music GE (Castle 16.40 to NH 15.90) You really aren't wrong here. The sound clarity between Castle and NH was day and night. NH was fantastic tonight, but they really need to figure out the ensemble sound for the rest of the season.

OK, day after debriefing. It's not really quite exact per se, because I was working sideline all day, so I didn't really get the spectator view.
I was quite baffled by the judges a bit because there were quite a few confusing placements overall. However, some thought overnight had realizing the ands that advanced to finals generally had their show complete (or at least 75% of it). Quite a few strong bands that got left out because of fairly short times on the field. I know this because it wasn't unusual to make bands wait for 5 minutes before we sent them out to the goal line. Many big names felt like they only had 20% on the field. As a consequence, the general takeaway from this regional was the bands that beat out the >75% complete shows (entirety of bottom 5) are serious contenders. The rest obviously didn't have enough to match, but by no means should they be out for the count for the rest of the season.
With that, there were tons of penalties. Like principalagent said before, Adair County would've been the 11th band in, with Henry Clay/Anderson County tying.
You all already know about the top 5, Bourbon Co. a monster this year, yada yada. Nothing worth of substance to add at this point.
I'm more interested in the non-complete portion below all the completed shows. From my best recollections, I believe everyone underneath Central Hardin and Murray still needed to fill in some more parts of their show, so I'll exclude those 2.
Here's the ranking in that order (no penalties, Music GE 1/Music GE 2/Vis GE): Adair County (9/6/24) Normal (10/15/10) Columbus North (14/16/19) John Overton (8/17/14) Floyd Central (9/19/22) Whiteland (22/18/11) Lindbergh (21/22/13) Clinton (19/12/17) Lafayette Jefferson (18/21/26)
So some key takeaways: 1. Adair Co will be fine. Question is whether the visual aspect will come to them (20th in Vis. Ens. and 24th in Vis GE). My answer to you is probably. 9th in Vis. Ind. is encouraging. 2. Bourbon Co is not going to be toppled, though as the Class A champion. It's not really out of question, just kind of difficult to see Adair catching Bourbon by Grand Nats. 3. I'll be honest, I'm surprised at Normal. Both performance captions (Music/Vis) were pretty bad overall, but GE altogether suggests they have something going. There's some potential to turn some heads this year. 4. Consistency in Music GE suggests Columbus North isn't going to be saved by the music. Maybe enough to keep them marginally ahead of the rest of the Class A pool at the south regional, but that claim is also questionable. 5. I can't tell which Music GE judge to agree with for Floyd Central. 6. The recap proves what I was thinking of Whiteland this year: pretty on eyes, not quite on the musical score. 7. Same with Lindbergh. I didn't see them perform, but similar placements suggest the same thing as Whiteland. 8. I really would not pay attention to this regional at all with Clinton. Clinton barely had anything on the field- 5.7 penalty. They looked as sharp as the top bands in the regional. If they had a similar amount of show on the field as the top 5 did, they'd be hanging with FZN/Henry Clay easily.

Hahaha I like castle, but I think I like homestead better this season. I did see castle in prelims You like Homestead, that’s great. My comment wasn’t a criticism of you liking Homestead my criticism is you wanting to downgrade a band’s score with only seeing half of the body of work being scored. Thank you for confirming your’s as an uninformed opinion. lol you do have a point, but I thought I might just take the chance that castle wouldn’t perform an entirely different show from prelims to finals. Unless you mean castle’s show is going to change significantly or we didn’t see all of it Saturday. Let’s just celebrate the fact that we don’t have watch “alone” this season because that show was unwatchable

Thank you for confirming your’s as an uninformed opinion. As a new member of the forums, I would advise that you exercise great care and caution before you criticize a respected member of the community. The Hornrank forums are fairly new, but marimba11 has provided many significant contributions to the group during the time of the BOA/MFA forums.
To TWICE characterize an opinion (especially one that agreed with placement but disagreed with a scoring spread) as "uninformed" based on the fact that the holder of that opinion had "only" watched Castle in prelims is not the way to get YOUR opinions valued by the long-time posters. We don't always agree with each other (and frequently vehemently disagree) but still value the input of others who love the activity.

Yes I agree. Posting on these threads is a privilege so make sure you promote the programs you love all day long without slamming other programs. If you don't then you shouldn't be posting.

Yes I agree. Posting on these threads is a privilege so make sure you promote the programs you love all day long without slamming other programs. If you don't then you shouldn't be posting. This forum is not for "promoting the programs you love." It's for a discussion of the activity, and occasionally that includes critiquing and providing personal opinions on participating groups. No one want to read a forum filled with individuals gushing over individual programs at the expense of actual discussion.

THANK YOU. I’ve been around on the forums too long to hide my opinions these days haha. Of course people will disagree but that’s the fun of it exactly. Whatever the forums are we welcome all who want to critically DISCUSS, even the accusers! I don’t really care what people do as far as accusing me of stuff because I’m not that type of person to take things personally, but you will look like a fool and not further our discussion by accusations.

So, as a mostly disinterested observer, I'll chime in with my thoughts on the top 5 (yes, I watched this regional finals, not McAllen, even though I live in TX - I am from KY and keep tabs on that area)...
Carmel - this show is more accessible to the audience than recent shows. Well performed with lots of room to grow. However, I think there will be significant challenges from Avon and the Texas contingent, and it is going to be fun in November. They could win, or they could finish 7th. I really think the top of GN will be very competitive, and Carmel will be right there going for 4 in a row.
Castle - I really liked this one. It was clearly a notch below Carmel, but only 1 notch. If they were attending GN this year, they would be a very strong finalist contender.
North Hardin - one of the more difficult and challenging shows they have put on recently. Even with it being dirty right now it shows through. They are pushing really hard to finally beat Marian Catholic for the AA title this year. I think they have a shot if they can pull everything together. They are a fringe GN finalist, but should be top 20 at worst.
Bourbon County - I absolutely loved their opener - that is some hot music and drill. I agree that they are the frontrunner to win class A this year, and I think they make semi-finals on score.
Franklin - good show, but missing something. It didn't grab me like the 4 above. I remember the first time I saw them live in 2015 at Lucas Oil, and that show was outstanding. This one isn't there, at least not yet. Still, they are a top-notch program and will have this humming by the end of the season.
