Anything PR 2019 goes here...
How in the world were they able to clean so many tenors playing at once this year?

Show announcement? This is from three months ago so I’m not convinced.

I've heard people say both, but I think it's real

It is real, their director recently talked about it in an interview somewhere.

Regiment is going to have to figure out their design game this year, and up the execution to match, or they could be in real danger of falling out of finals. Concept wise I'm not convinced. The whole "heroine's journey through adversity" might have worked at the beginning of the decade, but drum corps is distinctly different now than it was 7-9 years ago.

I have expected them to fall out of finals for a few years now. They just aren't as good as they were in the early 2000s. It is definitely time for a change in their design style

What exactly is happening? -------------------------------------------------------------------- People are thinking that a show about strong women in society should not have music by all male composers. Many internal people from the corps are fighting back though luckily. I just read Claire's response to all the buzz, I'm glad to see her sticking to her guns and not caving to the mindless mobs. Gender discrimination certainly is an issue in the marching community and meaningless outrage like this is only gonna help it stay around.

It's really sad for me to see Claire feel the need to post something like that, and I have a bit of a different take. First, it's not an issue of the treatment of women in drum corps, so it's entirely irrelevant how she's been treated at Phantom or past organizations because of her gender. The issue at hand is a design team decision and the design team should be responsible for defending the mistakes of the design team, not the student leadership. Claire writes: "... Yes, it is absolutely unfortunate that all the pieces we are playing are written by white men. However, gender was NEVER a factor in picking those pieces. Our staff picked music that they were super excited about and that they feel best tells our story. I think that picking pieces solely because they were composed by women would be the opposite message we are trying to send." She offers a false dilemma: either chose musical selections that tell the story well or chose musical selections composed by women. The direct implication of this message is that there is no music written by women that would tell the story effectively. In fact, there are plenty of musical selections by women that could equally, and many would suggest superiorly tell the story Phantom is trying to tell. This just highlights the laziness of the design team, in their choice to not seek out works by women artists including those that may be unfamiliar. I've been told that when questioned by a colleague in February about programming a show about women's empowerment with exclusively male composers, program coordinator Will Pitts response was "no one will fucking care about that". That's a pretty disappointing message and a little bit different than what Claire wrote about. When the design team is remaining publicly silent on the issue while the drum major is making statements implying that there is no quality music written by women, I think as a design team and group of educators, you have failed your students.

I'm not going to wade into the debate but this statement, Jeremiah, is spot on. If there should be any response to the controversy it should be coming from the corps itself in official statements. It should not be up to members of the corps to defend what they're doing, and allowing it to get to that point is highly unprofessional of the corps administration even more than the design team.

When the design team is remaining publicly silent on the issue while the drum major is making statements implying that there is no quality music written by music, I think as a design team and group of educators, you have failed your students. On second thought and after reading your take, I agree. When I originally responded I wasn't fully in the loop and I took it that people were attacking her and she was defending herself. It was definitely a tone deaf design choice when it comes to the music and they need to take responsibility for that. Their music selection makes it feel like a Phantom identity show (not that there's anything wrong with those types of shows) instead of a women's empowerment show, and they should at least be honest about that much. It also hurts to see this happening because a very good friend of mine is marching with them this year, so my bias very quickly turned in their favor at first. I hope they can turn it around this season after last year's disappointing (in my opinion) show and performance, but being caught up in controversy can really effect morale and even subconsciously effect the judges. Here's to an improving Phantom and for the kids to have as much fun as they can with the show, they deserve just as much as anyone else out there.
