Caccia and Chorale by Clifton Williams is a piece that I think could be interesting. Anyone else have any choices?

Anything Bruckner

Okay, yes, but also Bruckner is too difficult for 99%+ of the high school bands in this country. It would be a challenge for even the best Texas bands. Heck, the Finale to Symphony No. 8 was a challenge for Carolina Crown. The tuba part in the last movement covers two octaves in a couple of measures at fff, and if you rewrote the passage it just wouldn't be the same. Get a load of measure 490, with that interval leap from B1 to G3.

I've been collecting classical music works for almost 30 years, and I have more pieces than I could list for this thread. Here's a few highlights I'd love to see a great band tackle on the field: - Yasushi Akutagawa: Ellora Symphony (think a Japanese/Indian "Rite of Spring")
- Fikret Amirov and Elmira Nazirova: Piano Concerto after Arabian Themes
- Granville Bantock: Thalaba the Destroyer
- Bela Bartok: Kossuth
- Arnold Bax: Overture to a Picaresque Comedy
- Nicolai Budashkin: Fantasy on Two Folk Songs
- Cesar Franck: Le Chasseur maudit (I'm sure it's been done, but it hasn't been done ENOUGH)
- Charles Tomlinson Griffes: The Lake at Evening (from Three Tone Pictures) (would make a great ballad)
- Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr.: Danse Diabolique
- Jacque Ibert: Bacchanale
- Kamran Ince: Concerto for Orchestra, Turkish Instruments, and Voices
- Vassily Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 1
- Zoltan Kodaly: Dances of Marosszek
- Music from the ballet "Les Maries de la Tour Eiffel" (Georges Auric, Frances Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, and Germaine Tailleferre, composers)
- Witold Lutoslawski: Symphony No. 1
- Sergei Rachmaninoff: Capriccio Bohemien
- Ottorino Respighi: Belkis, Queen of Sheba (the whole ballet suite, not just "War Dance")
- Ottorino Respighi: Dance of the Gnomes
- Albert Roussel: Bacchus et Ariadne
- Henri Vieuxtemps: Violin Concerto No. 4
- Richard Wagner: Polonia Overture
- Leo Weiner: Prince Csongor and the Goblins
And, finally, because he deserves his own category (because he wrote SO MUCH music and it seems like Americans always play the same four pieces): Dmitri Shostakovich. - Counterplan: Song of the Counterplan
- The Execution of Stepan Razin
- The Fall of Berlin
- The Golden Age: Can-can
- The Limpid Stream: Overture
- Moscow Cheryomushki (full ballet suite)
- Symphony No. 4, Mvts. I & III excerpts
- Symphony No. 8, Mvts. I, II, & III excerpts
- Symphony No. 11, Mvts. II & IV excerpts
- Symphony No. 13, Mvts. I & V excerpts
- Symphony No. 15, Mvts. II & IV excerpts
- The Tale of a Priest and His Worker, Balda

I mean, listen to the first 5:00 of "The Execution of Stepan Razin" (especially the low brass writing) and tell me it wouldn't absolutely DESTROY on the field.

Recently…like Saturday. One of the big 3 I’m thinking. Edit…I found it. It was Rouse! Here at the 7:45 mark on this video.

This is something completely different, but I’ve thought for a while that ‘Echoes’ from Pink Floyd’s album Meddle would make great source material for both a preshow/opener as well as a broad show concept.

Rouse has a great sound for a smaller band! They're marching, what, 75 winds?
But yeah, their version of Bruckner's Eighth is toned down a bit. It pretty much has to be for a high school ensemble.

Rouse and Leander are definitely smaller bands this year but they’re both making fantastic sounds for sure. 🥰

I want to see someone do Mr. Invisible by Thank You Scientist, and anything by Maslanka. I know Bixby did Give Us This Day in 2016 and I know I saw another band do Traveler in 2019.

Avon did Maslanka just a few years ago. David Maslanka was a bit of an eccentric, and was reluctant to grant out arranging permission. He passed in 2017, so I wonder if his estate will be loosening the restrictions he put on his music or not. Then again, music copyrights have ALWAYS been more about "who you know" than almost anything else in this activity.

I feel like I keep saying that. 😬

Jagged Line really sold me on TYS. I'd love to see a band perform something out of their repertoire. Have any bands attempted an arrangement of Psychopomp?

The time signatures are really weird, and not many high school bands are willing to enter that realm. I have always wanted to see a group try though

Back in high school a couple of us came up with a show idea that was based on the continents of the world and featured “Heat of the Moment” by Asia, “Down Under” by Men At Work, “Africa” by Toto, and “The Final Countdown” by Europe. I still think with some work that could be a predictable but fun concept. We were all guard kids, so it wasn’t a very musically focused concept…but maybe with the right touch it could work 😊

Also, I’ve always wondered how Z. Randall Stroope pieces would translate to marching band. My chamber choir director back then was very fond of him (as in there would be at least one selection per concert). I really like seeing choral pieces arranged for ballads on the field.

That would get me on my feet.

Rouse has a great sound for a smaller band! They're marching, what, 75 winds? But yeah, their version of Bruckner's Eighth is toned down a bit. It pretty much has to be for a high school ensemble. Dublin Jerome opened their 2018 show with the same music. And there's a little band from Kentucky, Russell (aka Russell Independent), who did well in a couple Ohio shows this past weekend with a show incorporating that passage, albeit they've mashed it up with the overture to Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. They'll be at Grand Nationals this year, and based on video of their Sep. 25 performance at Morehead State, I think they almost have an outside chance of making semifinals based on class. (Almost. There are at least two other bands from Kentucky alone who are all but certain to beat Russell, two bands from Ohio for whom it would be possible, and I have no idea about the other states' Class A bands.)
What strikes me about all these performances is how they use about one minute from a 30-minute movement from a 100-minute symphony.

Adele’s new single “Easy On Me” just came out and WOW. It is sooooooo beautiful. I have a feeling we will be seeing/hearing this used A LOT this upcoming winter and next fall. It’s at a great marching tempo and is already in the very band-friendly key of F Major so it lends itself very easily to the pageantry arts.

Would love to see a show based on the movie Footloose. Claudia Taylor Johnson’s show in 2016 was actually originally going to be about Footloose. Somewhere along the design it transitioned into Flashdance though.
