I've been collecting classical music works for almost 30 years, and I have more pieces than I could list for this thread. Here's a few highlights I'd love to see a great band tackle on the field: - Yasushi Akutagawa: Ellora Symphony (think a Japanese/Indian "Rite of Spring")
Yasushi Akutagawa was heavily influenced by Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev. In 1954, when Japan did not have any official diplomatic relations with the country, Akutagawa snuck into the Soviet Union illegally to meet Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian, and Dmitri Kabalevsky. As a result of these fortuitous meetings, Akutagawa became the only Japanese composer to have works officially published in the USSR in the 1950s. After a visit to the famous Ellora Caves of Aurangabad, India, Akutagawa composed his Ellora Symphony in 1958. Very unlike a traditional symphony, the primitivistic Ellora Symphony consists of fifteen short movements that are allowed to be performed in any order! There are eight "feminine" movements all labeled Andante or Adagio, and seven "masculine" movements all labeled Allegro. Most performances bunch the feminine movements together at the beginning and the masculine movements together at the end, to give a sort of "introduction and allegro" feel, although I believe Akutagawa's compositional arrangement had them alternate throughout. Several of the masculine movements grouped together at the end of most performances combine to form a sort of "Primal Bacchanale in 9/8" (with a 2+2+2+3 pulse). It is this section (starting at 20:25 in the video) that I believe would be incredibly effective on the field.

Adele’s new single “Easy On Me” just came out and WOW. It is sooooooo beautiful. I have a feeling we will be seeing/hearing this used A LOT this upcoming winter and next fall. It’s at a great marching tempo and is already in the very band-friendly key of F Major so it lends itself very easily to the pageantry arts. Oh for sure

Almost anything from Tuomas Holopainen, composer and song writer for the Finnish band Nightwish. I've found a Illinois marching band video who performed their show using his music. Recently found an orchestra and a brass band who played one their top songs "Ghost Love Score", which I feel could play well on a field. Wouldn't be easy as he tends to do a lot of meter changes and it starts in 15, but would love to see it.

Would love to see a show based on the movie Footloose. Claudia Taylor Johnson’s show in 2016 was actually originally going to be about Footloose. Somewhere along the design it transitioned into Flashdance though. A "loose" dance concept became "flashier" it would seem.

When Sunny Gets Blue - McCoy Tyner Picasso - Coleman Hawkins
I’m wondering, has a BOA band ever done a straight ahead jazz only show? Like a 90s BD type of show?

Have always wanted to hear some music by Sleeping At Last. Saturn, Sun, Hope, and Earth are four songs I think could work well on the field.

Okay…I’m going to show my geeky side, so just hear me out.
Pretty much anything from the soundtrack to Yuri On Ice, composed by Taku Matsushiba and Taro Umebayashi. There are some absolutely gorgeous pieces in there that I find myself listening to on repeat that I would love to see on the field or in a winter guard show. A couple of the pieces have been used in actual competitive ice skating. I can really see it making the transition over to the marching arts eventually.
Additionally, there are so many fantastic pieces by the incredibly talented composer and video game developer Toby Fox, best known for his original games Undertale and Deltarune and for being a primary composer on the more-infamous-than-famous cult hit multimedia project Homestuck. You can walk into any high school band room and ask a kid to play Megalovania and the majority of them know it by heart. I’m not really sure how easy it would be to transpose for a band given it’s almost entirely done in 8-bit style, but there was a 5th anniversary orchestral concert last year that makes me believe it can be done. I would be over the moon to hear one of his pieces on the field.
Here’s that concert:

I'd love to see a marching band show with "Into the West" by Annie Lennox & Howard Shore and/or film score from Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore. If there is already a show with this I'd love to know.

I have another one - Fantasia for Alto Saxophone by Claude T Smith. I'm a classical sax nut and the second movement of this piece I think could serve as an extraordinary ballad in a marching show, mainly if accompanied by a really good Alto soloist. It would be a hard piece to pull off but it would sound amazing if arranged correctly.

- Charles Tomlinson Griffes: The Lake at Evening (from Three Tone-Pictures) (would make a great ballad)
Relax. Close your eyes. Listen.

I have definitely heard a band play Saturn before... I can't remember who if anyone knows. Blue Knights did it in DCI a few years back. Yeah, that arrangement was unfortunate. Took all the emotion out of the piece. But I can't be too mad at them given they also played Gorgon AND introduced us to Oliver Davis, whose music is being used by several bands this year and in some recent years.

Foundry - John Mackey
It’s certainly different and difficult to pull off but if someone’s pit could do it I’d love to hear it!

I saw a marching band perform this piece in 2019, but sadly they didn't have an actual typewriter.

I wish this came around more often. In the spirit of Halloween! It’s pretty difficult piece though that of course Bell made famous in 2006.

I would be over the moon to hear one of his pieces on the field. Here’s that concert: There’s definitely a wealth of Video Game and Anime music that groups could pull from, I was about to say, easily pull from, but there’s quite a bit of struggle to attaining the rights to use most music from those genres for one reason or another, if I’m in the position of selecting a music program for a show and a particular work is a MUST HAVE, well, maybe the hoops to jump through to get the rights could be worth it! CTJ 2019 was able to do Lion King music, and I’m not sure how hard it is to get those rights, knowing the reputation Disney has of being tough to work with, I don’t know how they were able to get the rights to perform it and heavily feature it. I would very much love to see other bands try to do so for Anime and Video game music and see if that could be done as well🤞🤞🙏🙏 P.S. the meta and fit with the importance of using music to enhance a performance art such as figure skating from an anime about said performance art to potentially enhance the performance art we know as marching band/marching arts is quite fun to think about👀😂
