Personally I think it would be cool if GN moved around the country like the World Series and March Madness does. In a perfect world this would genuinely be the perfect solution. Sadly there’s a lot of logistics issues to clean out in our real world.

Apparently it was very very very expensive to rent it out and it wasn’t making a return on investment. Very sad.

As already mentioned I am not saying that Carmel or Avon are underprivileged... I am saying that they are amazing programs, but that it is unlikely that they would be this way due to the state Indiana is in in comparison to Texas. I don't even think you read my post if your take away is me saying that Avon and Carmel have it tough. And yes, obviously being close to Grand Nats is a boon to their programs but it hardly counts as anything in comparison to what some other programs have going for them. The main point of my post was to point out the size of Texas and everything they have going for them. Indiana was just a comparison as it is Texas' main rival, and the post was in indirect response to posts made previously in this thread that were claiming that UIL and the Texas system was some divine program that is responsible to Texan success recently. Hardly an advantage? Really? Way to downplay that. Leander literally missed an ENTIRE week of school just for the opportunity to play at nationals. Claudia Taylor Johnson gave up a chance at a state championship title for a chance at a national one. Bands like Ayala, Vista Marietta and Clovis West have to fundraise to bell to even get a chance to perform at Lucas Oil. It is not a small advantage to be able to minimally travel to Lucas Oil for not just a nationals performance but also an Indianapolis super performance. Carmel students even get to have a full school day sometimes after performing at nationals. Other bands don’t get that. This is an advantage I don’t want anyone especially you downplaying Since when did placement at Nats determine how good a program is? Having access to competition is what makes a band good. Obviously Nats is competitive but it isn't the only place where bands are able to test themselves against each other and improve. All Nats is, is a glorified SR that SA is way more competitive half the time. Placing well at Nats will get you clout for like 4 months and then the hype around your program dies down and you're left with the infrastructure that the staff and school have built. There is a reason why Vandy was the cleanest band in the nation in 2019 despite not having gone to Nats for a long time, and it's because they have access to competition. Carmel and Avon have the same advantage that every Texas band with the budget to go to SA has, which yes, is an advantage but it isn't some unique mega boon they have that keeps them from dieing. I'm not even going to comment on the "Texas is hardly appreciated" comment.

Concept: GN is held at the best fit stadium closest to the previous winner’s high school.

I honestly feel there’s a legitimate case to be made about how exhausting it is for the bands who have to travel so far vs those who spend the night in their own beds during GN. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Super Regionals moved around as well.

Apparently it was very very very expensive to rent it out and it wasn’t making a return on investment. Very sad. I don't think Atlanta will come back any time soon. SRs are good for larger bands to test their metal, and Atlanta is kinda far from a lot of large programs. I think smaller regionals dotted around the South and East Coast would be much more appropriate for the smaller bands there until we get some bands like Rosemount, O'Fallon or Fishers in the area to make it more appetizing for larger programs to come to.

The rough thing is that we have to host nationals somewhere, and somewhere someone will always have some sort of home advantage. I like the idea of rotating nationals locations though and varying super regional locations. What about using the AT&T stadium in Arlington? I’m sure Texas can definitely justify a second super. I’ve heard the acoustics are awful though but I have no actual proof that the acoustics are that bad.

If GN were to move, it would need to be held at an indoor stadium. Simple because with that many bands coming, you do not want any chance of a rain or snow out cancelling it. So that limits potential. Jerry World I heard is awful for band ignoring the cost. NRG is also out of the question due to logistical reasons. SA could probably hold it but with many bands coming from out of state, I think it's another logistical and housing issue. You have Atlanta but sounds like cost would then be the issue for MFA.
As for moving SR's around, they come up where the demand is for them. I could see one maybe eventually come up in Tennessee. Seems like those regionals are pretty well attended and a good middle distance for bands north and south from there. Next issue is time of year that you'd hold it. Can't be too early but can't be too late either while trying not to conflict with other BOA contests. It's just not as easy as you might think but they do the best they can.

I really don't get what Texas' GDP has to do with this conversation.
As a Texan, I am embarrassed at how pitifully we fund public school education. Our spending per student is among the lowest in the country. (Bottom five of the fifty states, I believe). That is a statistic that is many, many times more relevant to this discussion than the Texas GDP. I am proud and surprised at how fantastic the music education is in Texas DESPITE that level of funding.
Honestly, music education - and marching bands in particular, to keep this relevant to the main discussion point here - benefits from the outsized popularity and importance of football in the state. That importance we place on football bleeds over into an expectation that bands will always be at the games. It creates an atmosphere where many more students want to, somehow, be a part of what goes on at the games. It generates more money to flow into the system, via revenue from football and football boosters' support, that can support bands with help for transportation costs, for example. Marching bands also have easy access to stadiums where it's easy for directors to get high and get a judge's view of their band on the field without having to transport them ($) and/or rent out ($) a stadium to achieve the same thing.
All of this contributes to a culture where bands are expected to be good. It's not THE reason we have good musicians and good bands, but it is A reason.
Given the funding issue and so many other political factors prevalent in Texas, I am amazed and happy that we can produce high level arts education of any type in Texas. I'm not interested in a "Who does it better?" argument, I'm just here to take pride in the good that we do manage to produce here.
And I am the guy who will be giving loud standing ovations to EVERY band I see perform in Indianapolis.

So about those Week 5 rankings! Weren't they something? Bands did stuff. Some nerdy people (like me) put together a list. People complained (because that's what people do). Life went on. Nothing changed. We'll do it all again this week. Ain't it fun!

I didn't say money was the only reason Texas is good, and I also said that it was only one reason out of a handful so I agree with tou. The reason I brought up GDP was to comment on the size of the Texas and its economy. GDP measures an economy's size, not its affluence. My point was that due to the money that flows through Texas, it sees a lot of growth that contributes to favorable conditions for bands to grow, which isn't the case for a lot of other Midwestern states which has seen insane amounts of population and economic stagnation over the past decade.

That is correct. Many bands attempt to play with a range of dynamics rather than "Texas Loud." Hardly factual but Touché nonetheless 🤣

This has certainly been a lively thread. And for the most part, folks were polite and respectful to each other. Others, not so much. Let’s keep it friendly as the season winds down. We all have our opinions, but at the end of the day let’s remember that it’s just band. And hey, BAND IS FUN! 🥳

Please understand, when I drop a band in my rankings, it is SPECIFICALLY because I hate you and I hate your state. This applies to all 50 states. Thank you.

I can't tell you how many times I've dropped bands because a band parent gave me a nasty look (not that I didn't deserve them). Let that be a lesson to you all! Also, I accept bribes.

We all have our opinions, but at the end of the day let’s remember that it’s just band. And hey, BAND IS FUN! 🥳 In addition to it being "just band." Everyone has to remember that it is about the students. It's not about Directors, staff, techs, money, boosters, parents, or any of that. This activity is about students working tremendously hard to put on a show that they are proud of. Placements and trophies are the cherry on top, but the real achievement is the students performing their very best everytime they step on the field. I know we all have opinions when it comes to different ensembles that participate in competitive shows and I'm not saying we shouldn't, but sometimes I see some comments talking very poorly about different ensembles here and there and that is one thing I don't love about this activity. I'm not saying you should say every band is amazing or the best you have ever seen but there are more respectful ways to voice your opinions, particularly when that opinion is not in favor of an ensemble or how much money they have or how many times they have won a show or regional. At the end of the day...this activity is about giving students the opportunity to do something truly life changing and I think sometimes we forget that.

I think whenever the Texas vs. the world conversation takes place the size of Texas is always brought up but I never feel like anyone really understands it, so here are some quick stats Texas is 286,596 square miles in size, while all of France is 211,209 square miles Texas had a GDP of 1.887 trillion in 2019, while all of Brazil had a GDP of 1.878 trillion in 2019 Texas had a population of 29 million in 2019, while all of Australia has a population of 28 million as of 2019 Clearly France, Australia, and Brazil need to step up their marching band game.
