Can someone help a non-Hoosier out? What is the "with distinction" designation for captions? Is it a certain score that needs to be achieved, and if so, is it consistent across the classes? It's interesting to see only one distinction was given out in Class B, but there were several in Class C. Without going into the long history of ISSMA, the with distinction honor replaced the best captions awards so that ISSMA could honor more bands with their achievements. Yes, to earn it, the band does need to score above a certain threshold in each caption to earn it. Class D and C have the same level while Class B and A have a second level they use.

My understanding is that there is a certain score in each category (and overall) that determines what rating each band receives (gold, silver, bronze, etc). Bands get "with distinction" in each of the three categories if they score a certain amount over that threshold for a gold rating. I do not, however, know what the threshold is exactly.

Anyone know what happened to HSE and the 6pt penalty? That cost them a trip to semis. Rumor I heard was electronics issues put them a minute over the time limit. I know they weren't the only one with Electronics issues in the south. Not sure if others got penalties too.

Well now that we're less than a week from it, who does everyone pick to be our Scholastic class champions? I'm going to go with Salem winning back-to-back titles for B and for A, I think it's Lake Central.

Rumor I heard was electronics issues put them a minute over the time limit. I heard it was more like 3 minutes. 6 points seems like a stiff penalty for only 1 minute over time. It's one point for every ten seconds, but they were definitely at least 3 minutes over. Looks like ISSMA was nice instead of maxing them out at ten points.

Looks like ISSMA was nice instead of maxing them out at ten points. The ISSMA rules guide from 2019-2020 states that it is 0.1 for every 3 seconds. (I don’t see where this was in the changes for 2021 so I assume it is still correct.) This would suggest HSE was 3 minutes over. Penalties – Pgs. 49 & 50 Open/Scholastic Class Marching Band Penalty Sheet • Timing Penalty is .1 point subtracted for each 3-second infraction or part thereof subtracted from the band’s score.

Looks like HSE has been added to the Semi State schedule. They will be performing last in the second block.

Would anyone by chance happen to have scholastic finals results? If not that's completely understandable. But also congratulations to our newest Scholastic champions. (B) Maconaquah and (A) Westfield.
