Hello all.
While looking through recaps, I came across the 1985 Idaho Regional Championship scores. The Class A Champion is by the name of Magrath HS from “AB”. At first, I thought it may have been a typo for “AL”. Upon further consideration, I decided to Google Maps Magrath considering it is unlikely an Alabama band would travel to Idaho for a regional championship.
Google Maps shows Magrath in Alberta, Canada which is just north of Idaho. Does this mean a foreign band has competed in a BOA regional? Also, in theory, if Magrath could compete here, what would stop Mexican bands from competing at Texas regionals and Canadian bands from competing up north?

That'd be cool to see international bands come. After all. It's Bands of America. Not Bands of the United States heh.

"The Spirit of Alberta" Marching Band from Magrath H.S. in Magrath, Alberta still shows up in the Pacific Northwest every so often.
Their style hasn't changed a whole lot since the 1980s.

Also, in theory, if Magrath could compete here, what would stop Mexican bands from competing at Texas regionals and Canadian bands from competing up north? You are correct. McGrath HS is from Alberta, Canada. This is the only instance of a non US band competing in BOA. Now there was a BOA regional held in Moscow, ID in both 1979 and 1980. Those recaps are lost to history. So it is possible that McGrath or another Canada band competed in the 79 or 80 regionals, but I just do not know (that was even before my time). It is somewhat surprising that Canada does not have a bigger presence in high school marching band activities, especially seeing how drum corps have existed in Canada all the way back into the World War II era. Even when Grand Nationals was held in Pontiac, Mi in 1987 and 1988, we did not have a single Canadian band attend even though southern Ontario is right next to Michigan (I think the New York bands that attended those Grand Nationals actually cut through Ontario to shorten the trip).
