I thought hearing damage would be my biggest problem sitting row 2 on the 50, but it turns out the fumes from the band's generators will likely kill me far before the hearing damage comes in. Lol… those fumes are rough! Does everyone have generators now or is there a place to plug in?

Is that why the default among Texas bands is playing extra loud? They have to drown out the noise of their generators?

Anyone catch Seven Lakes or Pearland? Seven Lakes had a really solid performance, but it’ll be tough to get into finals with the level of competition here. Pearland had transportation issues and will be performing at 12:45 PM now.

BOA could rename the music caption after Hebron and I wouldn't bat an eye. They've added more detail over the few weeks which should help with GE. I don't know where to rank them, but wow.

Hebron is unbelievable. The technical abilities of their students never ceases to amaze me. How they have high schoolers playing such difficult music while marching and have them execute at such a high level is beyond me. The saxophone ensemble in the ballad was absolutely amazing. Without a doubt the best playing band in the country.

Hebron’s show has really grown on me since early season. Got to see it at an early season football game and have enjoyed it so much since then!! I would’ve never thought they’d amp their demand this much by the end though, that performance was ridiculous👀👀🔥🔥

I just don't understand how they get high school kids to play this?? I wouldn't have dared to give that music book to half my HS senior class to play at that level. Hebron definitely in the lead for the music caption. I actually thought they looked pretty good visually as well, until maybe the closer. Overall I'm putting them under CTJ and Vandegrift for now.

Longtime lurker for years here. Had the chance to attend Friday and listen to some great bands all day, but CTJ and the woodlands blew my socks off. As a former Hoosier I’ve heard about “Texas loud”, but let me tell you it exists. Excited to hear more at finals tonight.

Holy Mellophone Marcus! Best melo solo in high school marching band history imo! That has to be a French horn mouthpiece? Jezzzzuss ! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️

Marcus has won my personal “Best Ballad” caption for this contest. Also holy crap that closer was clean.

Admittedly pretty boring and mediocre overdone design choice but performed with OUTSTANDING precision that is amazing. Challenger for the top half.

That was a classic Marcus performance for me. Rich sounds with very clean technical execution to go along with a very clean visual program that does lack a bit in the difficulty department. I find myself sometimes wanting a bit more sound from them, but they're still able to sound so good. Those two mellophone soloists were outstanding and some of the best soloists out of any band here. Very solidly in finals for me.

Anybody who has written off Marcus should really reconsider. They're hanging with the big boys and then some.
Call me crazy, but the shows I've enjoyed most this weekend are the ones that aren't your typical "Texas loud" shows. Rouse and Marcus have easily been my two favorites so far. It might have something to do with them being a minority in a sea of loud.

Guess you can never count out Marcus from being a contender for the music caption either. They never fail to deliver the extremely balanced, concert-band sound in a stadium setting.

Finally able to pick Prelims back up at Cypress Woods. Cy Woods & Wylie were both stunningly good groups and could easily sneak into Finals. Pearland had the most complete & complex show design of those three with the cleanliness and depth of sound of the other two, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Pearland make it tonight.
Marcus is just so freaking good. It's an extra Marcus-y show, and nothing about the design is particularly interesting, but you can see your reflection it's so sparklingly clean. And their full ensemble sound is pure liquid gold. Guard seemed to take a Covid hit but similar to Leander & Bowie, is still fielding layered, complicated work despite their shrunken size. Incredible soloists and small ensemble work in the winds, crystal clean, delicate, nuanced drumline. you can't really ask for any better music than what Marcus serves up!

Loud =/= control, certainly not at this event. The top bands, absolutely, but even some of the borderline finalists have brass running wild at times. Hell, even Vandy and CTJ had some surprisingly questionable moments, for as amazing as they were otherwise.

KO was fabulous!! I love how much this group has grown. I don't know if they're quite ready for Finals yet, although I absolutely expect them to be in the mix and trading captions with other finalist-potential groups. I believe we will see them in SA Finals at some point in the next few years if it's not this year. They're a great group that has really figured out how to design a show.

I love me some Texas music, but let's not pretend the groups below the top tier didn't all have a few ensemble or release issues here and there. I think what srv was referring to more was that Rouse & Marcus in particular stood out because they really incorporated nuance, dynamic fluctuation, rubato tempi, and plain old sensitive musicality into their playing, whereas the approach from most Texas bands is follow the metronome and the page to a tee, with little room for musical inflection unless it's strictly written in and plotted out.

Marcus is pretty much allergic to offending those sensibilities and always takes care in maintaining the best ensemble sound possible, it always pays off for them on the judges’ sheets and is of course their biggest strength👀👀
