Alright, Now do it by percentage of school enrollment in band! [just kidding, the degree to which people parse various stats in this thread has gotten amusing] Marian: 16.6% Morton: 16.7% O'Fallon: 9.5% University: 11.6% Danville: 3.5% Collinsville: 4.0%

Astounding that Dobyns-Bennett and Central Hardin compete in the same class and have a difference of 220 kids on the field. I’m mostly wondering why on earth a AAA school would only field 85 students- maybe I’d see that size of band out of a school that has no investment in their marching band program, but why then go to Nationals? I’m sure there’s a reason why it’s so small, but it shocked me to see that Central Hardin was AAA.

Cool to see the breakdown by size. Impressive that Alter at third smallest in attendance was able to have such a successful run in 1A, 2nd place and Visual cap. Tons of heart, and talent across the board against some great bands with much bigger numbers.

Yeah and Wando’s numbers haven’t been that low since idk 2006/ 2007. Hopefully they can increase at least a little next year and get back to where they were

A difference of 500 kids in grades 10-12 translates to a wide discrepancy in school size. I would also say that you are painting with a pretty broad and dismissive brush. There are lots of things other than investment that affects band size.

That’s what happens when you just have one set of numbers out of context and zero additional information. It’s still pretty surprising to see a group with a larger pool size bring a band that small to a BOA event, though I’m sure there are many, many others.

And of course I’m sure every band has lower numbers now due to covid and an off season failing to draw in/maintain interest. I’m sure we’ll see an increase in band enrollment after such a successful comeback season!

New director in 2019, however their history includes: class 3A state champion, 2021 Class 5A State Finalist, nine-time BOA Regional Finalist and a two time BOA Grand-National Semi-Finalist So new director right before Covid, but a history of quality results. Of course not everyone goes to GN to win…

But I guess Castle is pretty similar to blue springs. So I guess DB is just huge!

As a Mark Twain supporter, I know not everyone goes to win just thought it was interesting how much of a size difference there was between some bands in the same class!

That’s one of the reasons I’m not a fan of props and pit orientation that change the size/shape of the field (but that’s just my personal opinion). I feel like Blue Springs has looked a lot larger in the past but I don’t have the numbers to back that up.

These would likely be 4a bands if they did boa. Dobbyns is a bit of a special case iirc in that I believe folks outside their proper district can pay quasituition to go there. And so they may draw a lot of kids specifically for this program. It has been a while since I read up on it and may have my facts a bit off but it's along those lines.

I actually almost used Nixa HS in my example, which also has a surprisingly large band, until I saw that DB was even bigger!

I'm just saying that their large size is likely partly due to the fact that the county kids who are into band and can afford it all pay the tuition to go there instead of other kingsport schools. A typical public school doesn't have that component.

I’m sure there’s a reason why it’s so small, but it shocked me to see that Central Hardin was AAA. It’s the feeder schools. I’m sure Kingsport has some amazing middle school bands that interact with the DB Band, therefore creating an opening for entry into said program. I am fairly sure (??) that East & West Hardin Middle Schools feed into Central Hardin, and neither of which have a reputation for having a notable band program. Comparing to neighbor North Hardin, which has two (insert more question marks here) feeder schools (Alton & North), both of which make up a great big deal of the KBO Middle School All State Band since its creation in 2019(?). Even John Hardin’s main feeder school (Bluegrass) had more KBO All Staters than East & West Hardin… combined. With that behind said, funding also has a lot to do with it. Even the top bands in the state have to fundraise their butts off and charge their students well over 1K to be in the band (@lafayette). Without a great history to back them up, it’s hard for any extra curricular to get funding today, especially in a state where education is so poorly funded. This also causes an issue in the recruitment department; without an incentive (ie “We’re one of the top bands in the country!”), it can be hard to get people to join marching band. Central Hardin did just make state finals this year for the first time since the early 90’s, so I’m hoping that is used as an incentive for MORE funding and MORE participation in the band! As we’ve seen time and time again, it is completely possible for a band to grow rather quickly after brief success (a great example of this is Mustang after Indy 2019). As for the “why go to nationals” question, it has an easy answer. They go for the same reason everyone else goes; for the experience, memories, and opportunity to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium. As I’m sure you know, there are bands much smaller than 85 that attend nationals. Why do they attend? Because at the end of the day, BOA, and specifically GN, truly is a positively life changing experience and actually does make everyone feel like a winner in life. Everyone that has been, whether it be in preliminary, semi-finals, finals, or exhibition performance can attest to this! Note: I am not from the area, just vaguely familiar with it so please, if I made any mistakes within that first section let me know!

Thank you for answering a lot of my implied questions. I didn’t mean to come off as insensitive with my “why go to nationals” bit- I don’t mean to imply that small bands can’t be competitive or want to make memories. I’m a huge advocate for small bands as you can probably see from my posting history Altogether I was just pretty surprised by the amount of variability in programs that are in the same class! I chose to comment on the difference between two outliers that don’t represent the majority at all. I apologize to anyone that might have been stung by my words. It’s my own fault for choosing my words poorly and not clarifying. I appreciate the responses!

Have the numbers. Will post early next week. Numbers based on data from registration or what the directors gave to Jolesch for photos. "Prop kids" are included in the numbers for bands that use them. [...] William Mason - 259 [...] For statistics nerds: Mean = 130.74 Median = 109 Mode = 61 This is great. Thank you! So it appears that Mason is the largest competing band in Ohio. I don't have numbers for Kettering Fairmont or Lakota West (I have pictures of both on the field but haven't counted them), but the next largest I know of is Beavercreek at 240. Only four other bands at OMEA state finals were at 200 or more. And it's possible some of the numbers there are overstated. Lakota East is listed in the OMEA program as 200 exactly, but per your figures they were actually 189.

Hey, y'all - I just wanted to come on here and thank you for all of the great comments about Brownsburg over the last couple of weeks. I don't think there are any of the kids on here, but there are parents, and the word was passed. We are all super proud of their performance, and are hyped for next year. In the meantime, watch for our Winter Percussion and Winter Guard coming on strong!

There were some bands where numbers were clearly lower this year - Center Grove and Wando come to mind immediately. And there were a lot of big sounds and visuals coming from smaller ensembles!

Center Grove has been down for a number of years.

Wando will probably recover fine. Although their days w/ numbers above 250 are probably over. I'm sure some left due to no competitive season ect. Their winds and guard were still pretty large this year compared to how bad I think it could have been. Percussion seemed to take the biggest hit numbers wise.

I’m sure this is common knowledge with all of you guys on here, so please bear with me as someone who is new to this world, but I was wondering if there is a way to purchase videos of the finals performances from BOX 5?
I looked around to see if there was a place to do so in Indy and was unable to find anything. Thanks so much for your help!

I don't think so, but there are a lot of videos on YouTube of finals performances. I'm sure if you look around a bit you'll be able to find the bands you're looking for.

Getting license agreements to sell the videos became extremely complex during the 2000s; more bands performing and packing more musical selections into one show. So they went to the live streaming services only.
