Whatever. It’s not as if it matters at this point. They’ll get one more performance. At least they drew a late slot. Definitely. I just hope they can have a good performance and then we can lay this show to rest. RIP! Yeah, a good performance to finish the season would be great. No electronics issues, please! I just hope they can take something from this season and turn things around next year. This one was rough.

Am I misunderstanding or does this mean that Murray was in on score? Don't the class qualifiers come first? Correct. Murray was between 23rd and 30th overall Probably the biggest surprise for me. I didn't even have them in the top 50. But at least now there will be the opportunity to learn the answer to the question I put to the forum about their show: on the high cam, I couldn't tell whether the good guy or the bad guy got the gold.

I’m gonna be honest…there’s a lot of this that I would personally disagree with! So I’m glad that there are lots of talented and experienced judges in the dome that know better than me and put deserving bands into semifinals.

They don't necessarily know better than you. An informed opinion is still an opinion.

So who got the best semi draws from the bubble bands? Dobyns-Bennett drew a really good time but going after Flower Mound will be tough.

What are we thinking the range on placements could be for Rockford?? Their prelims run was awesome, but I know this is a super competitive year and so seeing them with the 8:15 am time slot is just new to me. Usually we would be inside the top 22 on a normal year. I remember my senior year in 2018 we played at like 11 something I think for semis and ended up 14th.

Here are my personal rankings of the 99 performances, showing how I would score them. This is not a prediction. The judges will do what they will do. It's just my opinion. 19. 85.0 Lakota East (Ohio) – “Zodiac” 27. 83.5 Center Grove (Indiana) – “Of the Amazon” 28. 83.0 Lawrence Township (Indiana) – “Dancing With Ghosts: A New Orleans Tale” 30. 82.0 Miamisburg (Ohio) – “Caravana” 32. 80.5 Bentonville (Arkansas) – “Opus 48” 33. 79.5 Lake Hamilton (Arkansas) – “The Artist’s Journey” And they did. But of my personal top 34, there are 28 bands among the 34 actual semifinalists. (I know it doesn't work that way. I made no attempt to consider bands by panel or class. And I look forward to seeing how my scores compare to the judges'.) Obviously the biggest disappointment for me is Lakota East. But I know a lot of others really liked Bentonville (while I felt their show was kind of flat), so I'm sure there are some who never thought that Lakota performance stood a chance. (I may have been misled by Lakota West's score in St. George last week. When I saw both bands at the same event earlier this year, I thought they were the top two, with West ahead of East, but not by very much.)

Most of what I consider questionable results are from Panel 2. Murray in on score over both Bentonville and Lakota East is a numbers management issue. The bands that went early on Panel 2 had no shot based on the semifinals list.

Can anyone help me identify which band wore the purple in front and green on the back uniform? He walked up on the podium 2nd to last to receive the prelim award. I think the last few on the podium were out of order. I am very curious about their show.
Thanks

So Russell Independent maybe.

All in all, while I was certainly surprised by a few placements, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all those students push the activity to its limits. This is my first time watching Grand Nationals and I see the appeal now hahahaha.
My favorite show of the last two days has to be PCEP's. It wasn't the most clean and/or tight performance in the world, but it was EXTREMELY entertaining. I have a soft spot for comedic shows.

The bands that went early on Panel 2 had no shot based on the semifinals list. I just watched video of another recent performance by Murray and I think I underrated their show today. While I made note of some of the strengths I now see (like the generally good quality of their music even when their feet are moving quickly, the interesting writing in the woodwind feature, the entertaining trombone solo in the ballad, the juicy arrangement which lets that song play out, and the impressive fight choreography), I discounted them because of some flaws (the excessive narration, a few musical flaws here and there, the relatively limited field coverage, and the apparent amorality of the whole show) to which I probably gave too much weight. Not saying that they're as good as the two bands you mention, but probably better than I had thought.

PCEP 2006 introduced me to Michael Nyman and I’ll be forever grateful for that. Still one of my absolute favorite shows. Always gonna have soft spot for them, very excited to see them tomorrow!

A prelims to rival all prelims! I wish they would make a dvd (or I guess maybe a Google Drive folder?) of all the bands. It’d be so nice to be able to watch all of these shows on demand. I guess illegal videos and giggle-filled shaky camera angles (IYKYK) will have to do for now.

Realize that I’m an Indy homer but Center Grove and Lawrence were robbed this year. Such quality performances too. No way PCEP or Jenison should be above them. Would add Lakota to be ahead of those two groups as well. BOA's prelims/semis selection system is archaic and should be individual competitions based on Class sizes first & foremost. Two classes on Thursday & two on Friday. I don't understand what the worry is with Lawrence or Center Grove not making it in. They have rich histories. As you see, not even the GOAT, Marian Catholic, is immune to a Next 8 seeding heading into semifinals. Homestead is far outside of their normal seeding. It will happen to some of the elite bands today, tomorrow. It always does. Even Norwin, who is getting lauded for potentially being the favorite in AA, had many dormant years on the national scene. Plymouth-Canton had a few meager years as well.

I like that we get to see some small bands beat large ones but I do agree that it can more often than not be a bit unfair. Do you have any more ideas about this concept?

I like that we get to see some small bands beat large ones but I do agree that it can more often than not be a bit unfair. Do you have any more ideas about this concept? Here is my proposal: Thursday: • Classes A & AA in direct competition. • Top 4 in each class advance on score. No class awards. Friday: • Classes AAA & AAAA in direct competition. •Top 4 in each class advance on score. No class awards. Semifinals: • 30 Bands (Performance order is determined by pre-draw only). There are no 34 bands or 38 bands. Mature selection process. • 16 Bands (4 per class), PLUS the next 14 at-large bids for groups based on score, regardless of day. Finals: • Top 12 Bands qualify based on score. • Top 2 in each class automatically qualify for finals, regardless of score. • Minimum 12 Finalists, Maximum 16. • Retire the Class Exhibition stuff. Go back to the better pre-1995 model & allow the bands to directly compete. • Class Champions are determined by finals performances and results. • Finale includes Class Champion Bands as well as the overall Grand National Champion. As you see, this isn't much different than what they are doing now, but much more inclusive of smaller schools, who are virtually ignored within the competitive arena. Gone are the days of automatic qualifying pity parties for groups who fall outside of a Top 30 but have to be qualified to make semis an actual competition in class. Why shouldn't a top performing band in a smaller class not be able to compete on Saturday night. Wouldn't that heighten the drama? BOA needs it for sure.
