I think this is the first semi finals appearance for Signal Mountain. If Murray wins the class A title, that will make it 44 years since their last GN Class A title. If Norwin wins the class AA title, that will make it 37 years since their last GN class title (they were in Open class back then which was remaned class AAA in 1986). If Blue Springs wins class AAA, they will become the first band from Missouri to win a Grand National class title. Since the start of the semi finals format in 1996, Carmel and Marian Catholic are the only two bands to have made semi finals every single year. I can tell Marian has been heavily affected by the pandemic, perhaps more so than a lot of other bands. Show them some love, they deserve it. I expect they will be much stronger next year. Congrats to my fellow Michigan bands, Rockford, Plymouth-Canton and Jenison. Miamisburg was 1st in AA going into semis in 2019, only for Marian to sweep in semis. Good for Norwin to be in first going in, and it would be quite the year if someone aside from Marian was performing Saturday night to represent AA, but I’m definitely not counting them out. Wish we could see scores to know exactly how close the top 3 are (or aren’t). 🤷🏼 This is an amazing point. AA in particular always seems to be crazy in prelims as opposed to semis (caption swapping, odd placements, etc) As someone else wisely said, today is a new competition for everyone! Good luck!

Absolutely loved Archbishop Alter! Talented musicians and they know how to entertain the crowd. Bravo to the little band from Kettering, Ohio!!

Archbishop Alter must give judges such a headache lol.
Obviously a band of 12 members is going to have a relatively low GE ceiling, but the individual performance levels are so high it's just unbelievable. Great Season Alter, can't wait to see you next year!

Very Good performance from Rockford this morning. First band to make me turn my headset down, and they overall had a nice ensemble sound with great dynamic range throughout the show. Definitely a lot of visual dirt and some relatively minor phasing issues in the opener so I can see how they ended up next 8 this year, but still a great showing from Rockford!

Hate to say it, but PCEP is having some MAJOR intonation issues in their opening hit.

It very much is, which is why I personally despise the Top 22/Next 8 performance slotting. AA is one to watch today for sure. New panel. Marian with a choice slot.

Normally don’t like shows like PCEP’s, but I gotta say, they really sold me on it! Clearly having a blast out there.

PCEP
Admittedly this type of show is not my cup of tea but I liked how the table props were used, I liked the musical choices(Ratatouille soundtrack is a great choice), and the kids performed it very well. Definitely a lot of intonation and ensemble music issues throughout the show, but it was fun to watch. Good job PCEP

Nice performance from Cleveland, but I am not a fan of this show

Cleveland
Modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The theme is a little on the nose at times but I think it plays well and the audience seems to be into it, especially for how early it is. Visually, they're the cleanest group to go so far, and I think they have the best ensemble sound so far today too, although a little quieter than some groups earlier. I like this show and I have them out front for the moment.

Very Full sound in the woodwind feature in the second movement.
A lot of really exposed hornline writing for Jenison, mostly nailing it. This is a great run so far.

Jenison - Sprits of the Canyon
I really loved this show, best design so far today imo. Musically, there were a few moments of overblowing, but the design was great and they really shined during the quiet, transitional moments(loved the french horn feature). Visually, the design was great. The props worked well and the river running through the field in the ballad provided some nice visual contrast. Probably visually dirtier than Cleveland, but I have Jenison comfortably out front after that energetic performance. Congrats Jenison, that was great!

Jenison is one of the most visually impressive sights this year with just how minimalistic it is, yet at it's absolute maximum effect. It's so striking! And of course they play very well. I just loved how much it matched and then the water just truly popping because of it. Just terrific!
