I definitely would not mind Mustang being the Designated Fun Show Band. They’re too dang good at it! Mustang is easily the most internet-smart program. One of these days they'll get in Finals for just being a total meme band.

my point was/is, if you are going to do a montage like that, try and have every school represented if at all possible. It just seemed thrown together at the last minute Filming, uploading, downloading, sorting, watching, editing, exporting…for 99 bands is no small feat. I thought the recap was a great touch to end the weekend, it might not have captured every band, but it captured a lot of smiles and emotions! This always was an annual tradition for BOA and the feedback year after year for the kids screaming when their band shows up has always been a part of the fun. However, there has no retreat, so the kids yelling at the crowd just didn't hold the same reverb as it did years before. On top of that... It was midnight. The ceremony usually started around 11. This I'm pretty most of the non-participating directors had to take their bands out to go home. I don't know what happened earlier in the day, but the general mood just seemed like everyone wanted to go home.

I know Avon and Carmel only had one picture each.. Oh the humanity. my point was/is, if you are going to do a montage like that, try and have every school represented if at all possible. It just seemed thrown together at the last minute Traditionally, the montage has included one shot of each participating band. Mr. Video provided the clips pieced together when thy were producing videos of each band. These were produced by Hansen Multimedia (see further posts for more information).

Defending us media people 🙏🏻 You can’t capture everything! I’m sure whoever worked on the recap did it with care and put out the best product they could in a ridiculously short window of time. It HAS to be thrown together at the last minute because there are bands competing up until the last minute!

I totally understand that and i know its not easy to get done under the time constraints they had to work with Just seems they could have had stuff from each school by the end of Friday night and could have got it edited down by the end of the finals saturday night--I have no idea how hard/difficult that is, as I am not a video editor. and it did capture the essence of the competition and the emotions of the students

I was expecting Box5 to do more of that this season, but it seems like most of Box5's "talent" all year was random people sitting at home and pre recorded interviews from a week ago, not exciting news and stories happening in the stadium that weekend. Even the live hosts Box5 had this year were only for the streaming audience, not for the stadium audience, which I thought was odd. Dan Potter still did his interviews on the sideline during finals, but I was expecting Courtney Allyson Mills and Daniel Montoya to do more of that during their broadcasts, and for that to be shown in the stadium.

Box 5 did their best, but Mr. Video just has the magic touch. OK so I’m gonna step in here. My name is Brian Hansen and I personally produced the grand national montage from 2008 until 2019. I did not do it this year. It was not a project with that Mr. video produced. I worked directly with Music for All during my time. I have the utmost respect for anybody who does the montage. As I know from personal experience it is very difficult. Basically the process for my production team was to shoot all the bands over the course of Thursday and Friday. My production team would literally be on the field for every single band. Then I would do the edit all day Saturday to finish it up. Of course there was all sorts of collecting and prepping and trimming of the edit before Saturday. But the bulk of the edit all happened on Saturday. I can say that every year that I did it we got every band in it. It’s an extremely difficult project and I applaud anyone who attempts it.

What does helped by the box mean? Sorry, newbie here… I meant that Broken Arrow would have gotten a higher Visual Performance Ensemble score--as the judge for that caption (and the other ensemble and all general effect captions) is in the press box. Hebron would have been competitive on the field (Visual Performance Individual) and I can see a good number of judges giving them .1 or even .2 ahead of BA with a good run. Part of the reason why BA was so strong this year is because their show was perfectly designed for "the box." In fact, BA won every box judge in prelims (own panel and combined) and finals. If their Semis run didn't get off to such a slow and rattled start due to electronics, I think they would have won the box all weekend. Broken Arrow had, in my opinion, the best overall general effect I have ever seen in a high school marching band. Powerful music packed full of emotion and visuals that flowed seamlessly with the music.

I’m really hoping Box5 diversifies some of their content next year. Some of it was interesting (I really enjoyed watching Daniel Valdez try to deny his anxiety over being way too high up in the stadium at LOS) but a lot of it felt extremely repetitive and occasionally annoying after a while. Not to say that there wasn’t some great stuff, but I think more could have been done with it. There also was zero coverage on social media for Indianapolis, and a lot of the posts from SA and GN were lower quality or suffered grammatical errors. I enjoyed getting to help out with St. Louis, but I hope that next year they’re able to reach out to people earlier and find qualified content and creators for both the livestream features and the social media feed. I’m hopeful considering this was the first year and there were a LOT of kinks that needed working out. It can’t be easy, especially with a small team! I think they did great for it being the first year.

So when I was doing the work from 2008 to 2019 My crew did the montage plus we produced all of the other human interest stories for YouTube and the finalist features, like others have mentioned. It is extremely difficult. For example, when we produced the video about the James F Byrnes pinball show feature in 2019 that took a crew of about four people 6 hours to shoot and edit. Lucas oil is a massive place. And finding everybody that you need to find to produce even a basic package is quite complicated sometimes. The workflow was intense.

Warning: Nerd post
As we know, BA set the highest score ever with 98.25. Since 1998 (settled on 12 finalist bands) Avon set the highest score ever for 3rd place with 96.65. The Woodlands tied the record for 4th place with 96.2 (Marian Catholic 2008). And Ronald Reagan set the record for 9th place with 91.45. The overall average for all 12 bands was also the highest in this era - 93.6. So 4 new or tied placement record scores, and the overall average highest since 1998.
I did scan back to 1990 via Hornrank's dataset and saw nothing that changes the above.

I was going to type up a storm about this past Saturday, but it's already 9:30 and it's Sunday, so some quick words.
It's one thing to be bummed a bit about our Indiana (Indy) bands missing out on Finals. It's another to know that the Indy bands were solidly out of Finals by a point when one feels they were way closer than what the scores let on (one being me, of course). This was an absolutely jaw-dropping year for Indiana all around... it just sucks that 2021 was the year the bands took that massive leap. All done and said, though, I'm so excited to see the future of ISSMA Class A (Castle, Homestead, Brownsburg, and Fishers) and where they go. This is the beginning of a new era.
This has been an incredible competition all around. Congrats to all the bands in finals. We say that every band that gets to perform are well-deserving, but I find myself just emphasizing that even more this year. This may as well be on par with 2016 for one of the most competitive GN's ever.
I do also want to congratulate the top 6 (Marcus, Flower Mound, TWHS, Avon, Carmel, and Broken Arrow). This has been a legendary night. We will talk about these shows for years to come.
Congratulations to Broken Arrow on win #4. What an experience.
This past year has been rough. I can't really quite say that GN weekend have been a relief for everyone.... But it certainly was worth it to see the thrill and excitement from the kids. I'm glad we got band back.

Hey everyone long time listener first time caller.
I have a request. Since Bands of America did not allow the students on the field for retreat, there won't be that beautiful shot of all the bands on the field together, one of my favorites every year!
So I want to make a composite picture of all the bands to make my own! For anyone that was there, did you happen to take a picture of your band? Here is who I have and don't have
Missing:
Claudia Taylor Johnson Blue Springs Mason
Have
Ronald Reagan Flower Mound Woodlands Broken Arrow Dobyns - Bennett Carmel Vista Ridge Avon Marcus

Blue Springs was definitely there! I can notice those striped pants from a mile away. I'm sure a picture is floating around somewhere.
Mason was out of uniform, but was one of the first bands to get to their position.
I've heard that CTJ chose not to attend the rest of finals or the finals awards ceremony.

Anyone know the reason for these penalties? Prelims (all Panel 2): 1.2 - Grayson County 0.6 - Carlisle 0.3 - Lawrence Township 0.3 - Northmont 0.1 - Carroll Semis: 01. - Plymouth-Canton Yikes, what a hefty penalty for Grayson Co Who determines penalties for timing, warm-up area infractions, and the like? It's curious that all the Prelims penalties came from the bands in the same judging panel. Looking back at my notes for Grayson County's show ("Constricted"), I didn't note that they started late or ran long or did anything else that appeared to break any rules. Carlisle did have a clip of Johnny Cash singing "Folsom Prison Blues" in their show ("The Game") that sure sounded to me like a straight recording and not a one-stroke, one-note presentation. Northmont did have a delay at the start of their show ("Line, Form, Color"), although not real long one. Nothing I saw in Lawrence Township's show ("Dancing With Ghosts") suggested a penalty would be forthcoming, but that is the show where the Box 5 high-camera video temporarily became an endzone camera.

The video montage did seem thrown together and im sure there were schools in the final 34 that weren't represented in it. I know Avon and Carmel only had one picture each.. as to the retreat, i agree having them break ranks in the bleachers was dumb. how is it any different than the kids being on the field, other than they are limited to who they could interact with since half the bands were on the other endzone section didnt make a lot of sense, and as others have stated, why so long...... lol Perhaps others enjoy the video montage, I found it rather uninspiring. In past years, lining up for retreat seems to have involved three or four bands crammed like sardines in the tunnels leading from the four corners of the field, and sitting around in there for half an hour or so. You can see it in the YouTube videos of past years’ awards presentations from GN-the videos start with a long period of silence just showing kids in the bowels of the stadium. Maybe that had more to do with it than the part where they were on the field? What was most refreshing to me personally was being able to walk around the stadium and see virtually no fear in anyone's eyes. There were virtually no masks & it was glorious. It had the feel of a normal event, with the exception of the retreat, which was underwhelming on just about every level & has been discussed by posters other than myself. Despite some commenters shooting down the idea that it does matter & that somehow magically kids had the exact same awesome experience, without actually attending the event themselves, I am heartened that several posters stood up and said, yes, it was terrible and it did matter. It doesn't take away from the performance itself, but the overall experience was negatively impacted & it could have been avoided. Hopefully, normalcy returns next year.
