Wondering what the odds might be that banddad85 is a reincarnated version of a recently banned member of this forum. Pretty low. If it was that individual, the Vista Ridge Rose Parade invite would be the target of scorn (worse than this). I just wish he had a different log-on - I landed last Sunday from Indy to a bunch of text messages asking why I posted comments on the retreat or lack there of. whoa - I am banddad84 - not 85

My two cents worth on Mustang and the Esprit de Corps
Many of us on these forums have participated in Grand Nationals. No matter what level your band is at, you work very hard all season so that you can put on a good show at Grand Nationals. That was certainly the case when I was in the activity 30 years ago, long before thousands of people could watch your performances live on their electronic devices and long before the videos were posted to the internet (we did not even know what that was back then). I can only imagine how much pressure there is nowadays to put on a good show at Grand Nationals and how much work these kids do to prepare for this event. When you go to Grand Nationals, every band acts with a good amount of Esprit de Corps. You are reminded that you are representing your school, community and state on a national stage. The behavior actually comes naturally. I mean all the bands have worked so hard to deliver a good show and be able to attend this event, you kind of want to soak it all in. That also comes across in your treatment toward your fellow band members, other bands and certainly the BOA staff. I imagine that when a band is suddenly faced with the possibility that they may not be able to go to Grand Nationals after working so hard all season, it is a huge disappointment. Mustang was having an outstanding season. I mean we have all taken note of this band this season. I am sure that when they found out they may not be able to go to Grand Nationals because of a logistics issue with the busing, they were devastated. Imagine their joy when they found out they were indeed going to be able to make their prelims performance time. I am sure that joy amplified the spirit that this band would have already have had if they were not faced with these challenges. I am sure that is what left a good impression with the staff.

So many bands around the country would probably love to go to GN but can't. They had real anticipation that was almost taken away. Just goes to show how fragile this activity can be sometimes

History Buff is right. I heard a lot of comments about how they were so happy to be semifinalists when only a few days ago it was in question if they’d even be able to perform in prelims! They were very relieved and it was a massive massive weight off their backs which no doubt lead to their increased joy and contagious happiness.

I’ve seen many Grand National finals in my day and I have got to admit this one was competitive! Arguably the hardest break into finals EVER (aside 2016)!
You throw Wando and their “Cabinet Of Curiosities” show into 2018 or 2017 and I’m sure they make finals over their other counterparts! A really refreshing competitive finals after 2019’s mellow yet very enjoyable year!
I have A LOT of thoughts on this year and I’d LOVE to share them! I loved the designs of the upper half this year but as a former designer and former director I did find some faults in the bottom half’s design ESPECIALLY how the shows of some bands didn’t play up to the CLEAR strengths of the performing bands! The students gave it their all and I hope designers and arrangers step it up!

Poor Tim. His judging is a wild card for sure, and it sucks that Wando was on the not so great end of it, but I love that he calls the balls and strikes as he sees them. He’s one judge who’s never afraid to change his mind if a band knocks or out or falls flat between rounds. Probably helps to have a day job completely divorced from band so there’s no worries about any allegiances or backscratching or backlash.

I've been thinking about that Wando vs. Blue Springs issue for a bit now. I think the Visual Ensemble score was low but I think the ordinal was right. Watching Blue Springs and Wando back to back, Blue Springs was just a little better - pure and simple. Those lines in the closer just were not lining up at the end for Wando - it was a pretty fair ordinal imo. And if the drill was any easier that would have meant content issues I think, so they were stuck.
I also think Wando's ballad kind of hurt them. usually it is their strength, but this one was so rhythmic and didn't have the usual structure I think it was hard for the kids to adjust to. The trumpets seemed to struggle a bit with it the whole season. Maybe not the best time to change the formula so much after 15 years of success with covid and a school split.
Anyway, Wando was so close and they certainly were basically there. They should be very proud of what they accomplished. The cards just fell where they did, we all knew someone great would be on the outside.
