A lot of schools in this size range allow 7th/8th graders in. Murray has apparently more than half the winds are middle schoolers or 9th graders Crazy that preteens can play like that. I don’t think I can…

Crowd looking rather thin. Curse of the first performance slot

It’s gonna be a while before we see another Grand Nats where the bottom half is this strong.

Is this an unusually sparse crowd for Grand Nats or do people just tend to sit higher up? The blast zone and mid zones have a lot of empty seats.

Not at all controversial opinion: Flower Mound's Seuss show is wonderful. Being a former tuba/euphonium guy myself, I especially love the 20-sousaphone and 2-euphonium groove-down session in the middle of the show. IT's the highlight of the year for me. I would love to see them sneak away with a medal. Controversial (?) opinion: Broken Arrow's music book is boring as hell. Melody. Woodwind flourish. Power chords. Rinse repeat. I am NOT saying they don't deserve to win, just that their music book is boring. Controversial Opinion: there are parts of FloMo’s show I like, opener especially, seeing it on the field in Pennington, the colors on the field even the blues of their uniforms just POP right out at you, very good visual presentation, and there are moments I feel a little something, the warmth to start out the show from the flute soloists, the interesting musical styles played in the pit, the opening hit, and the reprise of the first melody during the ensemble backfield turnaround. But I feel that most of the musical program is a bit of a let down for me personally, since I’m not too awestruck from the “GE” visual and musical wackiness that I hear often is what people enjoy. Fully aware that the show is meant to be designed and performed as such, it just doesn’t grab me.

Paging boa junkies. What’s the most dramatic change from semis to finals where a band ended up winning the eagle? Has anyone outside of the top 3 in semis ever came back and won or is Kevin destined to leave Texas? Lawrence Central was 4th in Semis and won in 2001 with no caption wins.

Great showing for Reagan’s guard so far. Yeah, they're working to dispel the stereotype that Texas bands don't do guard well.

The crowds are big and apparently fewer gates are open right now than usual. Making it tough for spectators to get in timely. They let Reagan parents jump in line and probably DB parents now too. Hopefully it fills up after DB.

The height of those front line screens bothers me. I get they're being used to 'disappear' the band at times to make it a guard presentation (which is impressive). But eh.

I was thinking Murray must be a large 1A school somewhere in the 800-900 range to be this large and talented. They’ve got less than 500 students 9-12! I counted about 40 hornline plus 18 guard and 17 percussion. 75 is a pretty nice chunk of the total school! 90 total members in the Murray band.

I don’t think any of the Texas bands here are perpetuating that stereotype tonight. Vista, maybe, but I think they’re almost there and would be if they were just given the chance. Otherwise, these Texas guards are on fire!

Hopefully it fills up after DB. It took me 30-35 minutes of waiting in lines to get in the stadium. Brutal! 1st year it’s been anything like that.

Hopefully it fills up after DB. That's pretty terrible event management. I imagine some of it was the delay in awards after Semis and people trying to get dinner in before 7:45 though too.

I honestly didn't even think of that but it does detract somewhat at times. Yah, this is my first read of bands this year, and last year was a wash of course. So it's been awhile. I noticed advancement in 2019 with Texas bands' use of guards and apparently they've been building on that. They're not like Carmel levels that I recall, but they're not the "noticeably underutilized in the design" thing that seemed to stand out in the past.

I can’t get into their show at all. Their talent is outstanding as always, but the show just isn’t my cup of tea I agree. It’s really not that tough of a show. It does not sustain my attention and I’m not a fan of the uniforms. I agree with all said above. I love broken arrow. Face Me, Utopia, Wild Blue Orchid, Zo. Amazing. This show doesn’t quite spark with me, that being said personal opinion and what judges see are quite different. I have Carmel winning personally.
