A few hours ago during the Waukesha, WI Christmas parade, a Red SUV sped through the parade striking dozens of participants. Details are still emerging, but it is a mass casualty event with ~30 people down. A local band contact informed me that six members of the Waukesha South High School marching band have been taken to local hospitals due to injuries.

From what I've been able to find, the local police are reporting one fatality and twenty people seriously injured. Definitely one of the most disturbing things I've seen

From what I've been able to find, the local police are reporting one fatality and twenty people seriously injured. Definitely one of the most disturbing things I've seen "Multiple fatalities and 23 injured (11 adults, 12 children)" was the last update. No specifics beyond that yet. While searching Twitter for more information I stumbled across video of the band being hit. Definitely not something that needs to be shared with anyone except the authorities.

This is truly awful. I really do have absolutely no words. I am destroyed. I am in shambles. All of my love to the band. Every single ounce of love to those hurt and injured. Absolutely all of my love. I love you all please please please share the love and good vibrations.

Yea, news sources keep posting videos of it. I recommend anyone looking through articles surrounding the incident to be cautious and just scroll past the videos, they'll make you sick the rest of the night.

Itβs just all too much. π
My heart is aching for these students and the families of those injured or killed tonight.
Stay strong, friends.

Just horrible. My deepest sympathies to all.
(And a reminder that most early reporting from mass casualty events is pretty unreliable. Be careful in particular about any updates you encounter on social media, e.g., about the number of deaths or the identity or motivations of the perpetrator.)

I don't know which marching band this is, so given that it happened just 80 miles from Waukesha, I'm posting to this thread rather than starting new one. (Feel free to move or delete my post as needed.) The video at that link shows a band marching in the 4th of July parade about two hours ago in the usually quiet northern Illinois town of Highland Park when gunfire erupts somewhere behind them and they run for cover. I think I hear about 20 shots in rapid succession. At least six people were killed and two dozen injured. From the video, I would guess that no one in the band was shot, but as always with mass casualty events, very little is known at this point. Edit: CNN reports the shooter fired from a rooftop, that his rifle has been recovered, and that he is at large.

Thankfully all members and staff are safe. Just an absolutely awful situation unfolding there right now.

Michael Gaines of Santa Clara Vanguard (and formerly the Cavaliers) tweeted that to his knowledge, no corps were in this parade. Crossmen tweeted out condolences and indicated that the Skokie parade that they were scheduled to perform in has been canceled. Edit: And thanks to a post on another forum, I see that DCI's list of parade performances today showed no corps scheduled for Highland Park, although some were listed to play in towns fairly close by (Deerfield, Lake Bluff, Glenview, Morton Grove, and as previously mentioned, Skokie).

Here's more footage of the same marching band starting about 20 seconds earlier. They're playing "You're a Grand Old Flag" by George M. Cohan. There are two bursts of gunfire. It sounds like a series of about 25-30 shots follow by a pause of about 15 second followed by a series of 20-25 shots. I've also seen video of a klezmer band on a truck farther back in the parade, behind the shooting location, as people run past them (i.e., against the parade route).

It was the marching band from Highland Park High School in the parade, and per this message from the superintendent all band members are safe.
