A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is my dad's all-time favorite movie; we watched it so many times growing up.
The Kings H.S. marching band, who appeared in at least one BOA contest this year, included two Sondheim pieces in their
Band Together show this year: "Putting It Together" from
Sunday in the Park with George and "Children Will Listen" from
Into the Woods.
Speaking of "Putting It Together," Sondheim chokes up a little bit when Stephen Colbert describes how important that song is to him in this interview which aired just a couple months ago. At that point, Sondheim had a new production (
Square One) in development, a revival of
Company opening on Broadway, a revival of
Assassins opening Off-Broadway, and of course the new movie version of
West Side Story, for which he wrote the lyrics about 65 years ago, will open in two weeks.
I assume there must have been some Sondheim selections in major BOA performances over the years. Anyone have some recommendations?
R.I.P. to a giant among composers.
