Unless we have a surprise appearance that isn’t on any list yet, I’m predicting a pretty sizable score difference between first and second here.

Out of the groups attending, I’m only really familiar with Lincoln Way, Kickapoo, Bellevue West, and Independence. Are there any other groups on this list with noteworthy accomplishments I should be aware of? I’m afraid I don’t know enough to predict anything outside LW sweeping first place and the other three at least making finals.

Bellevue East — sister school to West obviously, placed 14th (out of 24) at this regional in 2019. Competitively, West usually has the edge over East. Blaine — solid large-school-small-band program and first time doing BOA. Placed 2nd in class at YIM the last couple of years if I’m not mistaken. Blue Valley Southwest — this year, they are the only Kansas band attending BOA; they are attending Waco as well. Solid program that seems to be finding its footing over the years. Placed 36th at St. Louis both 2018 and 2021. Davenport Central — one of Iowa’s most esteemed programs; frequently attends GN, often scoring in the high 60s to mid 70s. Grand Rapids — I believe they have won YIM in class several times. Though, the last time they attended this regional in 2019, they were second to last. MOC-Floyd Valley — I don’t know much about them other than they are a good small band. Also their first time doing BOA if I am not mistaken. Northwest — Not much to say yet considering it’s a new high school (and the regional host this year), but they did alright last year!

I’m ridiculously excited for the Waco contest this year. 😁

I believe there are five high schools in the Blue Valley school district which is centered in and around Overland Park in the Kansas City suburbs. Most of the Kansas bands that have participated in BOA over the years have been from the Blue Valley school district. Of course, this is not to be confused with the Blue Springs school district on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro area.

Way-too-early prediction time. I am nobody and my opinions don’t matter. 1. Lincoln-Way H.S., IL 2. Lincoln H.S., SD 3. Bellevue West H.S., NE 4. Independence H.S., IA 5. Bellevue East H.S., NE 6. MOC-Floyd Valley H.S., IA 7. Blue Valley Southwest H.S., KS 8. Grand Rapids H.S., MN 9. Davenport Central H.S., IA 10. Blaine H.S., MN 11. Waukee Northwest H.S., IA 12. Millard South H.S., NE ————— 13. Rock Island H.S., IL 14. Omaha Burke H.S., NE 15. Dowling Catholic H.S., IA A — Independence H.S., IA AA — Bellevue West H.S., NE AAA — Lincoln H.S., SD AAAA — Lincoln-Way H.S., IL What an interesting little regional. Many fresh faces, and many bands we haven’t seen do BOA in quite some time. I think there will be a sizeable score gap between 1st and 2nd, and a smaller but still respectable gap between 2nd and 3rd. The top two in my opinion are essentially a lock. I expect both Bellevue schools to place in the top half here. Both Class A groups here are nothing to scoff at, which is INCREDIBLY exciting, and is a phenomena that doesn’t seem to occur at any other regional. We all know of Independence’s dominance at this regional, but MOC-Floyd Valley should turn some heads. They placed 6th out of 25 bands that included Papillion La-Vista South, Bellevue West, Gretna, and all three Millard schools at the Omaha Marching Invitational last year. Rounding out the rest of finals, we have Blue Valley Southwest (the only Kansas band performing in BOA shows this year), Grand Rapids (who placed second to last here in 2019, but I do not expect a repeat of that), Davenport Central (an always solid addition), Blaine (a fresh face to the BOA scene), Northwest (our gracious hosts), and Millard South.

I believe that’s still more than 2021. I would really love for a lot more of the more western Midwest groups to gravitate towards this regional, especially some of the Columbia and St. Louis area groups as well as bands from NE and MN. But I’m worried about this regional even returning next year with such poor attendance. There are plenty of groups that place bottom 20s at St. Louis that could really enjoy at least a class if not overall medal in Iowa, and it’s close enough that some groups that could really enjoy a BOA push (looking at Lee’s Summit and Rock Bridge) can access it without a multi-day trip.

No schedule for this show just yet -- directors confirmed they still only have block times. Have to imagine since Lincoln was a later enrollment, they'll probably be the first band on.

The University of Iowa band will also be performing in exhibition after finals.
The daily schedule for the event doesn't list any Class Champion exhibitions and the time allotted for finals leaves room for 15 finalists if there is no break.

You are right, directors were notified alongside the schedule that they would be taking all 15 bands to finals.

It would be terribly awkward to be that unlucky number 15. Thanks for the clarification!
Really looking forward to seeing Independence again this year!

It would be terribly awkward to be that unlucky number 15. Thanks for the clarification! Really looking forward to seeing Independence again this year! In this case, 13 and 14 too. (12 bands make finals at a regular regional like this, as well as Grand Nationals, and 14 advance in super regionals). If they still only accepted 10 bands into finals, we’d probably only see that many bands make it. Five bands left out of finals feels a lot more fair than only two or three. Incidentally, there were years where smaller regionals only accepted 10 finalists, even if only a couple were awkwardly left out. But then you have years like 2019 at the Toledo regional where all 15 bands in prelims advanced to finals. 🤷🏼♂️

I should have known being unlucky number 11 years ago 😞 I was about to ask if there had been a situation like this before!

As I've said in the past for small regionals (Ohio, I'm looking at you)...the morning/afternoon should be geared towards clinics and getting to perform for each other. Have a couple of the judges serve as clinicians, help these directors, let the other schools observe and learn, and have one performance at night.
This seems to be what Whitewater was going to be, but unfortunately, the football gods shot that down by scheduling a game that day.

The first four Grand Nationals in the 1970s and the summer nationals of the 1980s, all held in Whitewater, included workshops with clinitions.

Interesting to see that this regional is taking all bands to finals, while Las Cruces (also currently at 15) is not currently.

It looks like I’ll be maintaining my streak of attending this regional. But this time I’ll actually be Doing Things instead of being a cheerleader…my favorite band kid is now a college student 😆
I’m still disappointed over Kickapoo not being here, but the addition of Lincoln is helping a lot. I can hear it now… “In second place, the Lincoln…………………High School Marching Band!”
There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Lincoln-Way will walk away with the win here, but I still think that there are lots of fun things to see at this regional aside from a band that is likely going to be bringing a finals-tailored product for a GN season. I’ve never actually seen the LWMB live, despite having been a fan for a few years. I expect great things out of Lincoln as well. Independence is sure to be a treat- I’d love to see them come to St. Louis and face Sullivan or Archbishop Alter, or possibly take on Class A at Nats. I think they’d be able to hold their own. Bellevue West is also a favorite of mine- have you seen their guard? It’s a good guard. I like it. Some might even say I like lots of guards. Blue Valley Southwest certainly intrigues me- I know one mid-30s-at-St. Louis-band who went on to win this regional 4 years later. Who’s to say something similar can’t happen? And of course…how will Northwest treat their home field advantage?
Very excited to kick off the season here!

Definitely an intriguing early season regional! Lots of great groups there, and a great opportunity for some bands to showcase what they've got going for them!
A few thoughts of my own now a week and a half out:
Definitely looking forward to seeing how Lincoln-Way and Lincoln are early season. Being able to get a look this early will be great before each's respective super regionals (St. Louis for Lincoln, Indy for Lincoln-Way).
Very interested to see how Class A shapes out with Independence and MOC-Floyd Valley going head to head. Both great groups, and MOC-FV is kind of a hidden gem in rural northwest Iowa.
Given the results from Eden Prairie, it's worth considering Dowling Catholic and Grand Rapids as potential top half groups.
Lastly, I'm glad that the regional is in a more central location compared to Cedar Falls. Des Moines honestly feels like an ideal place for a BOA regional, not to take anything away from UNI though.
Can't wait to spend the weekend after this one watching this regional from afar!

Classification update. Rock Island moves down to AA from AAA. Hey, at least they're in the correct class, unlike when they were announced as 3rd in A at Indy in 2017, and then it was realized they were classified wrong. Oops.
