Well this time it isn't lol. I had my suspicions though. Our local meteorologist here thought that absolutely nothing would come out of this system when it was just an upper level low. The system just decided to become a tropical storm in less than 24 hours, and out of nowhere. You know, I predicted that Dorian would become a Category 5 Hurricane long before it even became a tropical storm given the water temperatures and low shear in the path the system was predicted to take. And for a while when they had the system completely crossing Florida I got some earie reminders of Hurricane Katrina. That was not a fun two weeks to be an aspiring meteorologist.

Give me some details on Churchill’s performance please!! Really hope they are successful this year! Churchill looked a bit smaller than in previous years, as expected in a director change, but I thought they were quite strong. Visually, they were quite good. Some tough drill executed and a very high level for this early in the season. Musically, they aren't stellar YET, but they held their own. Decent volume, but I feel like San Benito had a much warmer, more refined ensemble sound. Overall, they were stronger than I expected, and should have a great year considering the circumstances. Definetely a lock for a medal, and could potentially walk away as the champions.

I'm sorry, am I reading this right? No San Benito? This regional is notorious for its unpredictability. One year a band that didn’t make finals will make it, and vice versa. It’s not unusual for groups to fluctuate literally between 10 and 20 places.

Roma and Churchill tying is an interesting to note here. Other than that Alexander did it and took home the gold for Laredo good on them!

I'm sorry, am I reading this right? No San Benito? San Benito and Edinburg North would have tied for the 10th and final finals spot. Both were knocked out due to penalties - .9 and 1.8 respectively.

Jesus, my eyes hurt reading the prelims recap. Judges were all over the place. Here's some standouts: 1. Only significant times Music GE judges agreed (within +2): John B. Alexander (1/1) (1st), Edinburg North (5/4) (14th). That's it. Here's some numbers to cringe at: Del Rio (14/2) (7th), Birdville (14, 3) (9th), James Pace (22/10) (16th). 2. There's some massive penalties too: Economedes (1.8, 23 -> 24), Edinburg North (1.8, 10 -> 14), McAllen Memorial (1.9, 17 -> 20), Valley View (2.6, 25 -> 25). 3. I'm generally okay with differences in Mus/Vis performance captions, but man, some are just confounding: Winston Churchill (Mus 1/12), Roma (Mus 13/1, Vis 11/1) ( ), United (Vis 15/2), Sharyland (Mus 4/17), Birdville (Mus 3/19, Vis 2/12).

The fact that judges are penalizing groups for their performance times being under 6 minutes this early in the season is ridiculous. I think that penalty should be waived until around the 3rd week of regionals, the first weekend of October.

This is John B Alexander's first regional win.
Going all the way back through 41 years of BOA regionals, there are now 22 Texas bands that have won at least one BOA regional.

This year they seem to be enforcing that a little more stringently, but it's not unprecedented. 2017 Bowling Green Regional - William Mason swept AAAA captions but Homestead was AAAA champion due to short show penalty on Mason.

Had there been zero penalties in prelims, finals would have included 11 bands since 10th place would have been tied between San Benito and Edinburg North.
Prelims scores would have been
1) 74.90 John B. Alexander 2) 73.60 Winston Churchill 3) 72.85 Pioneer 4) 72.30 Roma 5) 72.00 McNeil 6) 71.50 United 7) 71.05 Del Rio 8) 70.60 Sharlyand 9) 69.75 Birdville 10) 69.40 Edinburg North (higher GE) 11) 69.40 San Benito
