I thought Harrison was at least marginally better than Winston. They do have some serious drill in this show.
However some individual visual and music mistakes still pretty prevalent. The ballad was going great until there was a complete missed attack.
But regardless, it’s better and I think they’ll be fine.

Good morning everyone. I'm doing the live blog for this show today. I'll keep you updated on my own personal rankings and quick thoughts which is all just for fun. As for the first block, here we go! 1. Bartlett - Oh wow! Great sound! Love the musical selections and how it all flowed. Some old school marching technique but I liked it. Can see why they had success at Clarksville earlier this year! 2. Harrison - Batman! Fun! Really appreciate that they used music from the whole gambit of Batman films. 3. Hoover - I really wish the band could have a deeper design cause these students are quite talented. But they are performing well with what they've been given. 4. Lambert - Only 6 guard members! But the band was still visually spot on. Enjoyed the simplicity of the idea and executed well with the minimalist props. 5. Oak Grove - Who doesn't love music from 'Prince of Egypt'. Good warm-up for a day full of band!

I’m so happy for them and so proud of the Memphis area kids and hope they start seeing more and more success at BOA

I thought Kennesaw was quite good, very controlled and balanced ensemble sound and although the show design isn’t anything crazy they’ll be in finals, not sure about top half

Poor Wesleyan an had to deal with the worst wind so far. Hopefully it will calm down again

Bartlett placed higher than Collierville at BOA last year as well as every matchup last year and this year. They seem to have a rivalry, being from the same area.

I enjoyed Hernando. Not sure their drill and staging is doing them many favors but they play pretty well. I think they march even better

One thing that was really noticeably impressive about Hernando was their tempo control across the field. Unfortunately it was very noticeable in Hardin Valley how that was pretty much missing.
I like the design though reminds me of my senior year show

Second block finished which means updated rankings from me. Lot of bands I could see switching places. The wind has definitely been a factor I think in some performance aspects. I think it may be affecting the audio from the stream too. No wind patches but could be affecting how well the clarity of bands sound could be. May sound better in person (as it tends to always be). But here they are along with more quick thoughts!
After Second Block: 1. Collierville - Another group I got to see live at Indianapolis and was blown away by. Think that prelims run was slightly better than this one but that could be because of the high wind/stream. Such a strong impressive sound. This group is trending in a very positive direction and can't wait to see how much farther they can go...which I think is really far. 2. Kennesaw Mountain - Another group where I think Box 5 has been balancing for the stream to avoid the wind (which I do not blame them for at all) because I felt they may have sounded a little better at Indy. But again, that was live and in an indoor environment. It's still a very pretty show and did a great job visually before the wind really started to pick up. 3. Walton - Another group that did a really good job of transforming the field from 'ordinary' props to 'extraordinary' with great color selection that really makes the field pop by the end. 4. Bartlett 5. Harrison 6. Hernando - Oh no electronic issues!! I got to see them on stream from St. Louis and I don't know if it was as good a run from then which makes me think between the electronics or balancing issues on the stream to avoid wind. Still a pretty good run. Hopefully a better run tonight. 7. Hardin Valley Academy - I really liked this theme. Beautiful guard outfits too. Love when it's integrated so well into the theme. Plus I love Owl City as well. Now if someone could just include the theme to "Firefly".... 8. River Bluff - Disney music? Yes please! Underutilized imo but could be licensing issues since it is Disney after all. Really liked the journey the band took us on. Accessible and good run. 9. Hoover 10. Mill Creek - Nice staging with the themeing of "trilogy" with so many references to 3's in the show. Good use of framing and performing on/with the triangle props. 11. Hillgrove - Very good job of transforming the field into a field of art and impressive singer! 12. Lambert 13. River Ridge - Was there an electronics issue going into the ballad or was it supposed to be silence. Either way, they did a great job of selling the nightmare with the musical selections. 14. Oak Grove 15. Wesleyan - I love a good space show and I really liked the rendition of 'Rocketman'. The guard is quite large for a group this size and really shines.

Yeah, I would take issue with the top 2 if you’re basing off Indy. The dome is very forgiving - hearing it live here, those first two groups don’t play with the amount of clarity as your next three.

It’s a really different show for Byrnes. They actually rely on soloists quite a bit more than usual. The pacing also is very different- kind of slow (which isn’t my cup of tea usually), but this show went by fast so it was paced very well. Drill is a little on the light side but it’s clean.
As far as the technical performance it doesn’t quite have those big moments we come to expect from them but I think they sound good.
Guard is huge probably the biggest I’ve ever seen from them.

As you can probably tell from my screen name, I have a kid a Byrnes and one in college who also marched at Byrnes! It is very different from years past but is slowly becoming my favorite from the last eight years! Lots of talent there today. I’m obviously partial but I thought Byrnes was amazing!

I don’t think DB had their best imo. Not terrible but some easy mistakes snuck in. Guard sort of struggling with rifle work a bit more than usual. Can’t imagine it’s easy with a dress on!
Anyone find the very end odd? It just sort of hangs there… not sure

The choir definitely sounds better though

Like I've said, could see it really playing out in a number of ways. Plus I have to contend with not being there live to get the true full experience. Ultimately, I landed on who I felt has the overall better GE. After all, that is the most subjective of the captions and we all have our opinions on that lol

How long is this jsu show?? [b I think there was a scheduling issue of some sort. I stepped away from the live feed and when I got back there was a band performing out of order and JSU didn’t start till 5ish.

With prelims in the books, time to lay down my final personal rankings. Again, just opinion (that I feel I need to spell out each time just to be safe heh) along with some quick thoughts. Great job today to all of the performing ensembles. Like always too, could see a number of these places swapped and depending on who is in Finals, could see even more happening if I think they have a better run.
1. Dobyns-Bennett - From the previous comments, it looks like I'm in the minority in thinking this was a much better run than they had a ETSU. The male singer especially felt improved and not as flat. The choir also sounded great. The guard is really starting to click in too. I like it! 2. Collierville 3. James F. Byrnes - The kids are performing really well. But the show I feel like is trying to tell a story...but the story isn't really clear. Perhaps I've missed something that will definitely need a second viewing. It'll be interesting to see what additions or changes they make come GN. 4. Kennesaw Mountain 5. Walton 6. Bartlett 7. Harrison 8. Hernando 9. Pope - This show was so fun! Loved the creativity of it and the kids were clearly also having fun. Very accessible to everyone and I thought performed pretty well musically. 10. Sparkman - Excellent job musically for all the nuances in the show. However, I really wish they would beef up the visual demand in it. I like the overall design, but if they upped the demand a little more, this band could really....chug.....along. Okay I'll see myself out. 11. Hardin Valley Academy 12. River Bluff -------------------------- 13. Harrison Central - Glad the band was able to make it after having some transportation issues. A surprising performance as they played quite well. Liked them playing with our expectations on the musical arrangements. 14. Seymour - Another strong performance by this group but don't know if it really grew that much from when I watched them at ETSU. Perhaps a bit of a cleaner musical run but will it be enough to make finals tonight? We'll have to see. 15. Gulfport - A fairly straightforward show which was strong from top to bottom. No real weaknesses imo other than perhaps having a more musical layering high and low points for GE. 16. Signal Mountain - I liked them last year and think they are even better this year! If they continue to be in Class A and improving, they will truly be a mighty force to be reckoned with down the line. The show did get rougher as it went along. Endurance probably. But overall fun and good! 17. Paragould - A lot of the visual motifs kept coming back which I appreciated and how they incorporated the meaning of Delta into their musical phrasing, but the entire show felt a bit....samey. Kinda like Gulfport, didn't really get those musical ranges of emotion throughout. 18. Hoover 19. Mill Creek 20. James Clemens - Good use of themeing throughout the show. Liked that they had an hourglass and hourglass formations throughout the show. Solid performance imo. 21. Hillgrove 22. Lambert 23. River Ridge 24. Fred J. Page - Just a fun show for the audience and kids. Effectively used the "Play, Pause, FF" moments. 25. McEachern 26. Oak Grove 27. Wesleyan
