October 29th in New Jersey? Whew. Bundle up! Possibly, but it could also be perfect weather for marching band. Equally likely to have temps in the 60s or snow flurries.

I'm grateful to see a New Jersey regional, but the timing seems a bit tone deaf if they're trying to attract very many bands from the area. Maybe they reached out to some key schools and have some intel? Every local circuit has either their state championship or circuit championship events that weekend, so I think it's very unlikely we'll get any new bands to test the BOA waters if the decision came between that and competing in their long-standing championship events. We may even have some frequent attendees of the Washington regional stay away from this one, even though it would be very convenient for them. Here are the events happening on this weekend during 2021 for some context:
Saturday, Oct 30 - New Jersey State Championship (US Bands) Saturday, Oct 30 - New England State Championship (US Bands - CT and MA bands) Saturday, Oct 30 - Mid-Atlantic Regional (US Bands) Saturday, Oct 30 - New Jersey State Championship (TOB) Saturday, Oct 30 - Lakeshore Marching Band Association Championship (LMBA - mostly PA bands) Sunday, Oct 31 - New Jersey State Championship (NJMBDA) Sunday, Oct 31 - New York State Championship (NYSFBC) Sunday, Oct 31 - New England Scholastic Band Association Championship (NESBA - mostly MA bands)
Cavalcade of Bands also has multiple events that weekend, though none are championship events. I obviously have no insight into availability so this very well could have been the only option. However, if October 15 was available, it's an off weekend for Rutgers football and would have been a better option.

I think I might actually go to this regional next year! Can spend time in my college town in the fall and catch some marching band in a growing region.

Keep in mind that Newark, DE is about two hours south of Piscataway, NJ on the Interstate. That greatly changes the dynamic for Virginia bands who have College Park, MD and Somewhere, NC both closer. Yes, this is an important point. Newark was still very accessible for the VA bands, but the extra two hour drive to Piscataway may not be worth it for many who now have consistently been attending the Washington/MD option a few weeks earlier. The region that this event will depend upon most is from roughly Philadelphia up to Connecticut, and the various circuit championships will make drawing more than a few from the region very difficult. The 2014 participants from the region were frequent BOA participants for the most part, so while you may be able to rely on some of those it will be a tough sell for any new participants to attend in favor of their state championships. US Bands and TOB will always take precedence in the area, for the large majority at least. I also do not envision any New York bands attending (save for maybe Arlington), as it's a tough sell to have them drive 4-6 hours back home after a regional Saturday night to then compete in their state championship the next day.

Confirmed: Williamstown H.S., NJ (Source) Band Calendar Very Likely/Confirmed: Spring Ford Area H.S. PA - ( BOA Regional @ Rugter Uni TBD) (Source) Band Calendar Of all the bands on the rise in North East, Spring Ford seems to have some decent ingredients to become a powerhouse - more so than John P Stevens imo. Larger district, large school, wealthy enough… Part of the reason NJ schools are so small is because they have SO many schools districts, (with a lot of overhead I might add.) So the numbers are lower. I forget the amount of districts but it is something ridiculous. Others come to mind as well, James Madison, Trumbull ect. This will be an interesting regional to watch. We could easily see this show catapult a band up a level or two right out of the gate. A la DB 2013

I am proud to present!
Confirmed: Immaculata H.S., NJ
(Source) Facebook post with the schedule
History: Immaculata is a private Catholic High School from Somerville, NJ. They were pretty big and a successful NJ band in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Region usually in the upper Group VI Open. Winning many USSBA/USBands NJ States throughout the years. In 2008, they were the first NJ Band in Group VI Open to win USSBA Nationals in more than a decade or more (the list is incomplete before 2004 so that's why I put more), and in 2012 they also, won Group V-Open USSBA States and Nationals beating Dartmouth HS and breaking their 4 streaks. My favorite top 5 bands in NJ back then.
They were also one of the few Class A bands able to produce more than 150 members back then like Blackstone Millville Regional HS. Sadly, numbers have dropped and so has their ranking. In 2012-2014 and 2016 they dropped to (Group V), and in 2015 and 2017-2018 dropped to (Group IV), and in 2019 (Group III) they got 2nd place out of 4 bands in States but lost by 1.9 points to Old Bridge, lastly in 2021 (Group II) they got 2nd place again in the USBands NJ States out of 3 bands but lost to Passaic by 5.4 points. Back then they compete in BOA before 2015: Newark Regional, DE 65.05 (21st place) Prelims *Class 1A Champion*
2007: Hempstead Regional, NY *Rained Out* 73.45 (11th place) Prelims *Class 1A Champion*
USSBA Nationals Champions (2008 and 2012) 2008: "Heroes" and 2012: "We Are Spartans"
Wishing them a fantastic year in 2022 and keeping the Spartan Pride live on.

Excited to see Immaculata make a trip back to BOA. Loved watching them back in the 2000s when I would attend USSBA finals regularly. If I remember correctly, Mr. "Impossible, You say?" himself (and current Cavaliers brass caption manager) was an Immaculata alum.
Hopefully we'll see a return of others that have dipped their toes in the past!
