Is there an list of all of the bands that attend Semifinals and how many times they attended? I do not have a list compiled of all the semi finalist bands. It would not be too difficult to do. Semi Finals began in 1996 and the Hornrank results page has them all listed (just a couple errors in the early years on a couple bands as to which state they are from). It wont be difficult to do, just time consuming, unless someone already has a nice list they can post. I can tell you off the top of my head that Carmel and Marian Catholic are the only two bands to be in semi finals every single year. Avon and Centervillle have been in every year except one. I have the data but not in a format easy to post here. I'll work on putting it in a usable format. Once it is posted, I welcome corrections (chances are good I'll mess up a few with 846 semifinals appearances across 196 bands).

The 12 Most Surprising Bands That Did Not Make Grand National FinalsThis is another category that I had selected a top 12 from at least three dozen potential bands, so pretty subjective. There have been many instances where a band does very well during the course of the season, but just does not deliver at Grand Nationals, so we get surprised that they are not in finals. There are other instances where a band just performs extremely well (better than expected) at Grand Nationals but for whatever reason fail to make Finals. Then there are times when a perennial finalist fails to make Finals and surprises many of us. This list kind of has a mix of all of those. Before I begin, there are four bands that I have not included in this list. All four of these are bands that were really strong in the seasons prior but had extenuating circumstances that really affected them. Those that were in the know about what was going on in these programs were not at all surprised that they missed Finals while those that were not in the know were very surprised. Those four bands are; 1983 Flushing MI who sustained massive funding cuts, 1983 Danville KY who lost a very hands on director, 1985 Chesterton IN who also lost a very hands on director, and 2017 William Mason OH who lost a director, some staff and essentially just had a whole lot of staffing drama. Unlike the first three, William Mason at least bounced back the following season from their struggles. Anyway, here are my top 12 picks in chronological order. Excellent list. The only other one I can think of is Ayala 2007. Coming into GN weekend having popped a 90 out west, scoring 7th overall after prelims, and then having their visual score keep them out of finals was a HUGE surprise for me. 7th in music and 9th in GE in semi's, but a visual score all the way down in the mid-20s kept them out. It was especially shocking given it was over a point and a half lower than any visual score they had gotten to that point. Those of us in attendance were shocked to not hear them called for finals. Still don't understand that one.

Centerville got boned in 2016. That year may have been the toughest race into Semis in the past decade, but Centerville should have made it comfortably.

Exiting the field following their preliminary performance, director Brandon Barrometti was obviously quite displeased with their performance. A snafu in Jolesch photo timing didn't help his mood. The announcement of semifinalists not including CJB was just the icing on a very unpleasant day. Keep in mind, however that Centerville wasn't even the highest placing Friday band to miss semifinals (when the distinction was by day) - Rockford, MI held that dubious honor.

So looks like Lake Central IN is the band that has been a semi finalist the most times without ever making finals. I know they came close a few times.

1985 Centerville HS from Centerville, OH - In 1984 the Centerville Jazz band made their debut at Grand Nationals. A strong and entertaining show landed them in 6th place. In 1985, Centerville did quite well at the two BOA regionals they attended, including being runner-up at the BOA Akron regional. I am sure it was a surprise to many when they failed to make Finals. They ended up in the dreaded 13th place in Prelims. I think they just did not deliver the performance they were capable of in Prelims. After this disappointment, they made GN Finals for the next four consecutive years. 1988 Norwin HS from North Huntingdon, PA - Norwin was a complete powerhouse in the 1980s. They racked up a ton of BOA Regional Titles. They were the 1982 Grand National Champions and leading into 1988 the only years of the decade they were not in GN Finals were the two years they did not attend; 1980 and 1986. While Norwin was not as strong in 1988 as they were earlier in the decade and they did not win a BOA regional title this season, they still did relatively well at the BOA regionals they attended. Everyone was shocked at Grand Nationals in 1988 when Norwin failed to make Finals. Turns out they finished in 15th place but less than a half point away from making Finals. This disappointment may have lit a fire under them as in 1989 they debuted a far more progressive show and ended up finishing 3rd in GN Finals. 1991 Centerville HS from Centerville, OH - The previous year (1990) was also a bit surprising to see Centerville not make Finals. In 1991, Centerville did relatively well at the two BOA Regionals they attended, even beating Marian at an early season regional. At the 1991 Grand Nationals, BOA had separate judging panels for each of the three classes. One judge on the Class AA panel was a bit generous while two judges on the Class AAA panel were more stringent. This had the biggest effect on Centerville; I think they should have been in Finals but the judging had them 15th place overall. We were all surprised and disappointed that they failed to make Finals for the second year in a row. This may have lit a fire under this band as the next season they were much much better and had a better show design, allowing them to win the GN Title. 1994 Union HS from Tulsa, OK - There was a lot of buzz about Union this season with their very innovative Batman show. It was not just the unique show that had everyone talking, they were quite good. They were dominate in Oklahoma competition and at BOA San Antonio, they finished in 3rd place behind Spring and Westfield. At Grand Nationals, they had a couple timing issues toward the end of their show. The music ensemble judge gave them a low score as a result, which caused them to place in the unlucky 13th spot. Had they not had that issue in their performance, I think this show would have done very well in Finals. Ironically, in 1995 they again Finished 13th in Prelims, but BOA selected a top 14 for Finals (they ended up 12th in Finals). 1996 Norwin HS from North Huntingdon, PA - During the course of the early 1990s, Norwin began slipping in placement at BOA competitions. In 1994, they actually failed to even place in the top 20 at Grand Nationals. Then they came roaring back in 1995 with a strong show. Not only did they make GN Finals, they ended up finishing 7th. Everyone was saying, Norwin is Back!!" In 1996, Norwin was continuing the performance level they had achieved in 1995. They won the 1996 BOA Toledo Regional beating out some strong bands in the process. We knew that getting into Finals in 1996 was going to be challenging as this was the first year of the Semi Finals format and BOA was only selecting a top 10 for Finals. But many of us still expected Norwin to be safely in. We were shocked when they missed Finals. They ended up finishing 13th in Semi Finals, so even if a top 12 was selected they would have just missed. 1997 Pomona HS from Avada, CO - In 1996, Pomona surprised us all at Grand Nationals with an amazing performance that actually landed them in 5th place in Finals. Given their long distance to a BOA regional, they did not partake in any BOA regionals in 1997. This year, BOA again only selected a top 10 for Finals. Pomona gave a strong show in Semi Finals. While not as strong as what they did in 1996, most of us expected them to make Finals. We were shocked when they missed. Turns out they finished 11th place in Semi Finals. Had BOA selected a top 12, Pomona would have been in. Perhaps the disappointment over this led to BOA going back to a top 12 for GN Finals in 1998. 2005 Broken Arrow HS from Broken Arrow, OK - After making GN Finals for the fourth consecutive year in 2001, BA did not attend GN in 2002. They returned in 2003. While they had a unique and entertaining show, they were not quite Finals caliber. In 2004, while they did not attend GN, they were much improved over the previous year. They were 3rd at BOA St Louis and runner-up at BOA Atlanta, finishing ahead of Kennesaw Mountain who would go on and place 2nd at GN. In 2005 they were again quite strong. At BOA St Louis they were third behind Lawrence Central and Carmel. Their performance was still very good and they were expected to a sure bet GN Finalist. At GN they did well in Prelims, but just did not have the performance they needed in Semi Finals and ended up in 14th place. Perhaps this disappointment sparked their drive in 2006 which won them their first GN Title. 2007 Ronald Reagan HS from San Antonio, TX - Reagan emerged as a BOA power in the early 2000s, winning multiple BOA regional titles and being runner-up to the Grand National title twice (2003 and 2005). Now they had recently lost their director (and I think had some key staffing changes) which would put them into a bit of a slump for a few years. However, at the 2007 BOA San Antonio regional, they still finished 5th (ahead of Richland who would go on and make GN Finals) with a score just over 90 points. Given this and seeing how they nearly won the GN Title just two years earlier, they were expected to be in GN Finals. However, it seemed like their show may have peaked at San Antonio. Not only did they fail to make GN Finals, they finished 16th in Semi Finals. It was very surprising. 2009 Plymouth Canton EP from Canton, MI - Between 1988 and 2008 Plymouth-Canton EP (PCEP) was a GN Finalist every single year except 2003. In 2008, they struggled throughout the season but somehow managed to pull it together by Grand Nationals and just made Finals. In 2009, PCEP was having a much stronger season. They were even a relatively close 2nd to Lawrence Central at the BOA Ypsilanti Regional. PCEP also had a very innovative show this year, very talked about amongst everyone who saw it. Given how much improved they were over the 2008 season, we expected they would be in GN Finals. We were shocked that they just missed GN Finals. They ended up 13th in Semi Finals with their music scores keeping them out of the top 12. 2013 Blue Springs HS from Blue Springs, MO - During the late 2000s and early 2010s, Blue Springs was very much a band on the rise. Many of us had our eyes on this band as a future GN Finalist. After steady improvement year after year, 2013 seemed like the year they would make their debut in GN Finals. They had a very strong show (one of my favorite Blue Springs show by the way). They did very well at BOA St Louis, finished 2nd behind BA. They then attended the BOA San Antonio Regional where they shocked us all. They finished 6th in Finals and ahead of bands like Marcus and LD Bell (two bands that would make GN Finals in 2013). So many expected that this would be the year for Blue Springs. We were all surprised that they missed GN Finals. They ended up in 16th place in Semi Finals. The music effect judges just did not think they were ready for Finals. We would have to wait until 2015 for this band to finally make their GN Finals debut. 2018 Marian Catholic HS from Chicago Heights, IL - All good things must come to an end. That is how I look at this. After being a GN Finalist for 34 consecutive years and claiming 7 BOA Grand National Titles and many Class Titles, this was the year that Marian Catholic failed to make Finals. They ended up in 15th place in Semi Finals. In some way this was not surprising as they had just slid into GN Finals the previous two seasons. Unlike years past, they were now competing against schools significantly larger with much bigger budgets and larger support staff. This all of course still did not take the shock away when this band missed finals for the first time. 2021 Wando HS from Mount Pleasant, SC - They very much gave a GN Finals worthy performance in Semi Finals, but so did twelve other bands. Wando ended up placing 13th in Semi Finals with a score of 90.55, the highest score at Grand Nationals that did not land a band in Finals. In Wando's 6 GN appearances going back to 2009, this was the first time they missed GN Finals. After their regional win at BOA Jacksonville AL and after watching their Prelims performance (they were 11th overall in Prelims) I was certain they would be in Finals. So it was a surprise that they just missed. Some others that come to mind, maybe even quicker than several that made your list from the same timeframes IMO: American Fork 2008 Centerville 2012 Lake Central 2013 Vista Murrieta 2016

They Exceeded Expectations
These are my 12 picks for bands that placed higher than most expected in Grand National Finals. This list does not include those bands that both surprised us by making GN Finals and then exceeded expectations (Maconaquah 81; Central Cabarrus 87, Jackson Academy 93 for example). It also does not include those band that came off winning the GN Title which took most by surprise (Centerville 92, Lawrence Central 01, Broken Arrow 06 for example). There were a lot of bands to choose from. I did my best to knock it down to a top 12. This will go all the way back to 1980. These are bands that most expected to be in Grand National Finals but their high placement in finals may have come as a surprise by many. This list will be in chronological order.
1980 - Tell City HS (Tell City, IN): 5th place in GN Finals This first fall Grand National Championships was not as competitive as those that came later. While Tell City had not won a State Title, by 1980 they were consistent Indiana State Finalists. In fact, in 1980 they were runner-up to the Class B State Title. So I am sure it was no surprise that they made finals. What may have come as a surprise is that they landed in 5th place (and were the second highest scoring Class A band). This would be their only appearance in GN Finals. In 1981 (a more competitive year), they missed GN Finals, placing I believe 14th in Prelims.
1984 - Western HS (Russiaville, IN); 5th place in GN Finals Prior to this year, in 1983 Western finished 23rd in Grand National Prelims. While they did not attend a BOA Regional in 1984, it was likely clear that they were a much better band based on their Class C State Title, which many claimed was the best Class C State performance of the entire decade. So I doubt it was to surprising that they made GN Finals. They gave one heck of a performance in GN Finals and ended up finishing 5th place and won the GN Class A Title. They also beat bands like Centerville and Marian Catholic. This would be their first of seven consecutive GN Final appearances. They would not place nearly as high at any of them as they did in 1984.
1988 - Plymouth Canton (Centennial) Educational Park (Canton, MI); 5th place in GN Finals PCEP had just missed out on making GN Finals the previous two years. This year they brought in some new staff (including designer Steve Brubaker). Although they did not attend a BOA Regional this season, they went undefeated in Michigan competition. They were clearly a stronger band than ever before. So for us within the state of Michigan, it was not a surprise that they made GN Finals; their first appearance. However, we were surprised that they ended up finishing in 5th place. This of course would be their first of many years in GN Finals. Turns out, PCEP was just getting started.
1988 - Westerville South HS (Westerville, OH); 6th place in GN Finals I had actually considered this band for this list of surprised they made GN Finals. They had last made GN finals back in 1984 and at the Akron OH regional early in the 88 season they were 5th; not exactly screaming sure bet finalist. They did come to Michigan for a competition later in the season and did quite well (finishing just behind PCEP). So perhaps it was not too big a surprise that they landed in GN Finals. They gave a great performance in finals and ended up finishing in 6th place, easily their best show of the decade. After a little bit of a rough season in 89, this band become a perennial finalist throughout the early to mid 1990s.
1992 - Northrop HS (Fort Wayne, IN); 7th place in GN Finals This year marked the first trip back to Grand Nationals since 1985 for this band. Their three GN appearances; 81,84 and 85 all landed this band in Finals. Although they had not attended Grand Nationals from 86 to 91, this band did quite well at both the BOA regionals they had attended and the Indiana State Championships. So we were looking forward to seeing this band return to Grand Nationals. This season, however, seemed to be an off year for this band. They had just missed finals at the very early season BOA Midwest regional and ended up in 7th place at the Indiana Class A State Championships. Given their previous history and the fact that 92 was not a really strong competitive year at Nationals, Northrop was still considered a strong finalist contender. They easily made finals and delivered a fantastic show in Finals, finishing in 7th place. Given their early season struggles, this placement was a bit surprising.
1995 - Norwin HS (North Huntingdon, PA); 7th place in GN Finals During the early 1990s, Norwin was slipping in performance level. By 1994, they failed to even make the top 20 in GN Prelims. It was clear at the 1995 BOA Morgantown Regional that this was going to me a much stronger season for this band as they were 2nd at this regional and beat out perennial finalists Centerville and Westerville South. With BOA selecting a top 14 for GN Finals in 1995, Norwin was considered a strong finalist contender. They easily made finals and then finished in 7th place with a show that had everyone saying "Norwin is Back!". Turns out, this would be their ninth and last GN Finals appearance.
1996 - Pomona HS (Arvada, CO); 5th place in GN Finals Given that this band had not appeared in any BOA Regionals (long trip from Colorado to a BOA regional), there was a bit of a surprise that they made finals in 96, even though they came close in 94. Those that saw their semi-finals performance were not surprised at all that this band made finals. In Finals they gave an amazing performance and landed in 5th place. Sadly this would be their first and only appearance in GN Finals.
1997 - Tarpon Springs HS (Tarpon Springs, FL); 4th place in GN Finals Tarpon made their first appearance at a BOA Regional in 1996, finishing third at the BOA Atlanta Regional. Then in 1997, they were runner-up at this regional and not too far behind Lassiter. Even though most of us at the time were not too familiar with this band, their success at BOA Atlanta suggested they had a really good shot at making finals, which they did. Not only were we surprised at how small this band was, we were a little surprised that this band that had just burst onto the scene landed in 4th place in Finals and ahead of bands like PCEP, Lawrence Central and Carmel.
2002 - The Woodlands HS (The Woodlands, TX); 8th place in GN Finals There was a growing number of strong Texas bands during the late 90s into the early 2000s. One of those bands was The Woodlands. They did quite well in 2001. At the 2002 San Antonio regional, they finished in 7th place. Given they were a Texas band, we felt they still had a shot at finals. They ended up really delivering at Grand Nationals, making finals and then finishing in 8th place. They finished ahead of Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan who had scored/placed much higher than The Woodlands at San Antonio. This of course was the first of many GN Finals appearances for The Woodlands.
2013 - Round Rock HS (Round Rock, TX); 4th place in GN Finals While Round Rock has been one of the longest corps style competitive marching bands in Texas history, they really started to rise the ranks in BOA during the early 2010s. 2013 marked the first time this band ever attended Grand Nationals. As an emerging Texas power, they were expected to make GN Finals. At the 2013 San Antonio Super Regional, Round Rock landed in 10th place. They really delivered at Grand Nationals. They actually won music performance for Class 4A in Semi Finals. In Finals, they finished in 4th place (their highest finish ever at GN) and placed ahead of several bands who had beaten them at the San Antonio regional. I for one was surprised they placed so high; of course they did certainly deliver in final.
2016 - Cedar Park HS (Cedar Park, TX); 5th place in GN Finals Emerging as one of the many Texas powers in the mid 2000s, Cedar Park made their first appearance at Grand Nationals in 2010, finishing 10th in finals. They remained a very strong program until their next appearance at Grand Nationals in 2016. I expected they would make finals and probably end up with a similar placement as in 2010. At the San Antonio Super Regional (just one week prior to nationals) they finished 9th. At Semi Finals, they were second to Leander in Class AAA; not too big a surprise. Man did they give one heck of a performance in Finals. They ended up finishing in 5th place. In fact, of the four Texas bands in finals, Cedar Park placed the highest, beating all the bands that had beaten them the week prior at San Antonio.
2018 - Blue Springs HS (Blue Springs, MO); 3rd place in GN Finals Prior to this season, Blue Springs had appeared in GN Finals twice before; in 2015 and 2017. It was clear by their third place finish at the BOA Indy Super Regional and their second place finish at the BOA St Louis Super Regional this season that Blue Springs was strong and had a really good show. They were considered a lock for GN Finals. They really gave an amazing performance at Grand Nationals (actually finishing 2nd in Semi Finals) and landed in 3rd place in finals, finishing ahead of Broken Arrow and Tarpon Springs. I certainly thought they were going to be in the top 6 (no big Texas names at GN this season) I was surprised that they landed in the top three.

They Fell Short of Expectations
These are my picks for the 12 GN Finalist bands who did not place as high as expected in Grand National Finals. These are all bands that were considered Grand National Finals locks in their time. In some instances, they just did not peak as expected at nationals and in other cases they did not perform as well as expected in finals (they scored/placed much higher in Prelims or Finals). Again, these are in chronological order.
1980 South Cobb HS (Austell, GA): 9th place in GN Finals South Cobb's time in BOA (or MBA as it was known then) was brief in their late 1970s/early 1980s glory years. They won the BOA Gonzalez, FL regional in 1979, becoming the first Georgia band to win a regional title. They also beat JM Tate HS at this regional, the band that would win the first fall GN in 1980 of course. Based on word of mouth, I heard that South Cobb was surprised by the results in the 1980 Grand National Finals. Even though the won the Class AA Title (the first year of Class AA), they finished in 9th place which I guess was a surprise. I believe that sort of ended their participation in BOA/MBA for a while. They did make a few appearances at the Atlanta regionals of the 2000s.
1981 Ben Davis HS (Indianapolis, IN): 9th place in GN Finals By 1981, Ben Davis was one of the best bands in the state of Indiana. They had won the Class A State title in 1976 and 1977. In 1980 they were state runner-up in Class A and this season 1981 they were third behind Chesterton and Northrop. In 1981, Chesterton, Northrop and Ben Davis were considered the top three bands in Indiana. At Grand Nationals (I believe this was Ben Davis's first trip to Grand Nationals), Ben Davis finished 9th place in finals, quite a bit lower than Chesterton and Northrop. What may have also been surprising is that Warren Central and Maconaquah (two Indiana bands considered not to be in the same league and Ben Davis) beat them in GN finals). I don't know what Ben Davis placed in 81 GN Prelims. Ben Davis's next three GN appearances were all top 4 finishes, including being runner-up to the title in 1983.
1984 Northrop HS (Fort Wayne, IN): 12th place in GN Finals This may be the biggest shocker of all time. Prior to 1984, Northrop had been among the top level Indiana bands. They won the Class A State Title the year prior in 1983. They also came away with a BOA(MBA) regional title in 1983, their first and only regional win. Prior to 1984, they had attended Grand Nationals only once before, back in 1981 when they placed 4th. At the 1984 Indiana state championships, they placed 2nd in Class A behind Ben Davis. From what I understand, most expected them to finish in the top 5 in GN Finals. So it was a huge shock when they were 12th. From what I understand, they placed much high in prelims. The comments from those at that event were that Northrop's show design may not have resonated as well with the BOA judging system. Even though it has been a long time since I have seen the full 84 finals competition, I would tend to agree that Northrop should have placed much higher. They made up for it the next year by finishing 6th in GN Finals.
1990 Marian Catholic HS (Chicago Heights, IL): 6th place in GN Finals Entering Grand Nationals in 1990, Marian Catholic had won 4 of the five previous GN Titles, including BOA's first threepeat. Although they were 5th place at the 1990 BOA Bloomington IN regional, it was an early season regional. We knew and expected Marian to at least be near the top at Grand Nationals given their tendency to peak late season. So when they were announced in 6th place, we were all surprised. This does have to be taken with a grain of salt because they were only a fraction of a point away from 4th place.
1994 Homestead HS (Fort Wayne, IN): 10th place in GN Finals Homestead was a band on the rise in the early 1990s and went from runner-up in Indiana Class B State Championships in 1991 to winning the Indiana Class A State Title in 1992. After attending some of the MBA Summer Whitewater Nationals in the early 1980s, Homestead attended their first BOA Regional in 1992, at BOA Indy they finished 7th. At the 1993 BOA Indy regional they came in a strong 3rd and won the Class AA Title. In 1994, they won their second Indiana Class A State Title and at the BOA Indy regional they were again 3rd and won the Class AA Title. 1994 marked their first appearance at Grand Nationals. We all had high expectations for this band. Despite finishing 4th overall from combined prelims, Homestead landed a surprising 10th in GN Finals. The music judges were not feeling it as they were third overall in visual performance and the visual effect judge had them first. Despite their continued success in Indiana, it would be 20 years after this competition that Homestead would return to BOA.
1998 Winston Churchill HS (San Antonio, TX): 9th place in GN Finals The couple years prior to 1998, Winston Churchill rose the ranks of Texas bands and ended up winning both the Texas regionals in 1997 with a very talked about show. In 1998, they won the BOA San Antonio regional, beating Westfield. Later in the season at the BOA Houston Regional they were a close 2nd behind Spring. 1998 marked the first time Winston Churchill attended Grand Nationals. After their success at the last few Texas BOA Regionals, this band came with very high expectations. Perhaps that caused a lit bit of jitters. Anyway, many were surprised when they finished in 9th place. A little grain of salt here as their score did break 91 points and was the highest score for 9th place at the time.
1999 Centerville HS (Centerville, OH): 10th place in GN Finals At the early season BOA Toledo regional, Centerville edged out PCEP (who would go on to win the GN Title later in the season). Of course, Centerville was a band that started the season strong and PCEP always peaked right at nationals, so this was not too surprising. Centerville had also placed 5th at GN the year prior in 1998. Centerville also had a really strong show this season. In 1999 GN Semi Finals, Centerville had a really good show and were 5th. I expected another top 5 finish for this band in finals. It was shocking to hear them announced in 10th place. Perhaps their finals performance was just not quite as clean.
2002 Ronald Reagan HS (San Antonio, TX): 11th place in GN Finals Ronald Reagan had one of the fastest rises in BOA history from school opening to rising to the top echelon of marching bands. The school was carved out of the district containing Winston Churchill, so the students who entered the new band had a strong music education background. Still, after opening in 1999, Ronald Reagan won their first regional title just two years late in 2001 at BOA Houston. Also in 2001, Reagan finished 2nd behind LD Bell at both BOA Arlington and BOA San Antonio. In 2002, although they did not win a BOA regional, they at two 3rd place finishes and one 2nd place finish at the BOA Texas regionals. 2002 marked the first time Reagan attended Grand Nationals and their recent success at the BOA Texas regionals made them a band with high expectations. So there was some surprise when they landed in 11th in GN Finals. They turned it around in 2003 and ended up in 2nd in GN Finals.
2006 Carmel HS (Carmel, IN): 8th place in GN Finals In 2006, Carmel was not only the defending Grand National Champion, but they had also finished in the top five in GN Finals every year since 1999. Carmel also attended three super regionals this season. They won BOA St Louis, were 2nd at BOA Atlanta and 3rd at BOA Indy. I think the show just may have peaked too early. We were surprised to hear them announced in 8th place in GN Finals (they were actually 9th in Semi Finals). While still a good show, this gave Carmel the dubious distinction of having the lowest placement of a returning defending Grand National Champion.
2006 Avon HS (Avon, IN): 7th place in GN Finals They won their 5th conseccutive Indiana Class A state title and won the BOA Indy regional this season. They were 2nd in GN Semi Finals, but then dropped to a surprising 7th in Finals. Yes, they made up for it subsequent seasons. In fact, since this disappointment, they have yet to finish lower then 3rd in GN Finals.
2016 Claudia Taylor Johnson HS (San Antonio, TX): 9th place in GN Finals Yet another San Antionio band that rocketed to the top. CTJ made their first appearance in Grand Nationals when still a very new school in 2011 and finished 8th in finals. They then just kept getting better, winning two BOA Texas regionals in 2014 (including San Antonio) and then coming in a strong 3rd in San Antonio in 2015. At BOA San Antonio in 2016, they finished in 4th. This was only a week before Grand Nationals. I expected their show to place higher than their 2011 debut (2016 was CTJ's second trip to nationals). So it was surprising that they ended up getting 9th place in finals.
2021 Ronald Reagan HS (San Antonio, TX): 9th place in GN Finals Reagan surged the later half of the 2010s, culminating in their win at BOA San Antonio in 2019, when they actually beat Vandegrift who would go on to win the GN Title. Despite the 2020 year off due to Covid and loosing a director, in 2021 Reagan still finished 5th at San Antonio. This was just one week prior to Grand Nationals and with the top two bands at San Antonio not attended GN. So I thought a top 6 finish at Grand Nationals was almost a given. So the 9th place finish in finals was a bit surprising.
So those are my picks. While it was not intentional, yes I know the San Antonio bands were all on this list (with Reagan Twice). I had also considered Churchill in 2002, Reagan in 2016 and CTJ in both 2019 and 2021. Hmmm

I actually thought CTJ in 2019 beat or, at the very least, met expectations. It seemed that TWHS and Mason had some not-totally-remote chance of moving past them (although neither did). And they were clearly under Vandegrift, Leander, and maybe Hebron from San Antonio. It would have been hard to see them above sixth, or perhaps fifth considering Carmel’s weak year. Indeed, Johnson was fifth in semis to Carmel’s sixth, which, if repeated in finals, would have been their lowest placement since 2006!

They Peaked One Placement Shy of a BOA Regional Title
This is the list of the bands that peaked at second place at a BOA regional(s), never to have won a regional title outright. I do not have the recap sheets for the regionals from 1978 to 1984 or the 1988 Western Regional, so there are likely several more who fit this list. It was a challenge just finding who the regional champions were let along who was runner-up. There are only two bands that fit this category from the years prior to 1985 that I know of, which I have included. Following is the band and the year(s) they peaked at number two in a BOA Regional Finals competition.
Haworth (IN) - 1980 New Philadelphia (OH) - 1982 Kosciusko (MS) - 1985 Sprague (OR) - 1985 John Marshall (TX) - 1985 Live Oak (CA) - 1986 Choctawhatchee (FL) - 1987 Lincoln-Way (IL) - 1988, 2021, 2022 Lakeland (MI) - 1992 The Colony (TX) - 1992 Clinton (MS) - 1992 Poway (CA) - 1993 Webster (NY) - 1994 and 1997 LV Berkner (TX) - 1995 Piscataway (NJ) - 1996 and 2002 Valley View (CA) - 1996 and 1998 Haltom (TX) - 1997 Cypress Creek (FL) - 1998 and 1999 Elizabethtown (KY) - 1998 Lexington (SC) - 1998 Pomona (CO) - 1999, 2001 and 2002 Diamond Bar (CA) - 2000 Milford (OH) - 2003 Norwalk (CT) - 2003 Ooltewah (TN) - 2004 Arlington (NY) - 2004 El Toro (CA) - 2004 Roma (TX) - 2005, 2017 and 2019 Lincoln-Way East (IL) - 2006 and 2007 William S Hart (CA) - 2006 and 2009 Air Academy (CO) - 2007 South Brunswick (NJ) - 2007 Ben Davis (IN) - 2009 Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ) - 2009, 2011 and 2013 Bourbon County (KY) - 2010, 2011 and 2012 Hickory (VA) - 2010 and 2011 Lake Orion (MI) - 2012 Walled Lake Central (MI) - 2013 Grants Pass (OR) - 2013 Panther Creek (NC) - 2014 Central Valley (WA) - 2014 and 2016 Allatoona (GA) - 2015 East Coweta (GA) - 2015 Homestead (CA) - 2015 Pioneer (TX) - 2016 Moon Area (PA) - 2016 Blue Springs South (MO) - 2016 Lockport Township (IL) - 2017 Mill Creek (GA) - 2017 and 2021 Green Hope (NC) - 2017 Bellevue West (NE) - 2017 Lynbrook (CA) - 2017 Seven Lakes (TX) - 2018 Coppell (TX) - 2018 Park Vista (FL) - 2018 John P Stevens (NJ) - 2018 Arcadia (CA) - 2018 Carroll (IN) - 2019 Rosemount (MN) - 2019 Lakota East (OH) - 2019 and 2021 Foothill (NV) - 2019 Fishers (IN) - 2019 Keller (TX) - 2019 Cleveland (NC) - 2019 and 2021 Weiss (TX) - 2021 Decatur Central (IN) - 2021 Cypress Woods (TX) - 2021 Summit (TX) - 2021 Morton (IL) - 2021 Timber Creek (FL) - 2021 Rouse (TX) - 2021 Campbell County (KY) - 2022 Grapevine (TX) - 2022 Cy-Fair (TX) - 2022 Rockford (MI) - 2022 Fossil Ridge (CO) - 2022 Independence (VA) - 2022 Westlake (TX) - 2022 South Jones (MS) - 2022 Davis (UT) - 2022

I think it's interesting that Thousand Oaks and Clovis West made the trip in the early 00s when they clearly had a better shot to make finals in the 90s

Yes I would have thought that after Etiwanda first made finals in 1992 that the floodgates would open. As for the 1990s, that did not happen.
I know that prior to the beginning of the semi finals format which began in 1996, a lot of bands that were a long way from Indy opted not to attend. That was when Grand Nationals consisted of just Prelims and Finals. So for many bands, it was a very expensive trip to come to and just give one performance. As they opened up Grand Nationals to more bands, they needed to create the semi finals format to offer more bands the opportunity to come and perform more than just once. It took a few years, but by the 2000s we did start seeing more west coast bands make the trip.
As for why such a good early 90s band like Clovis West did not attend, it could have very well been the cost factor. Or maybe the school administration at that time was not keen on the idea of sending that many kids half way across the country. These are all speculations of course.
For about as long as BOA has existed, there seems to have been logistical issues in holding BOA regionals out west, especially in California. 1993 actually marked the first time BOA held a regional west of the Rockies in 5 years. I think there was always concern as to whether or not BOA would be in California from year to year. Again some speculation here, but that may have been a factor as to why so many California bands focused on other circuits and did not compete in BOA.
I do know back in the day that a lot of bands opted out of BOA because the judging system was perceived as being very different from those that they were most accustomed. Even though percussion factors heavily into the BOA music captions and color guard factors into the visual captions, BOA did not have individual captions for those categories like many other circuits. California bands typically had extended percussion features (which I love) and a lot of visual moments which featured the guard. So perhaps (and again this is speculation here) many of those California bands felt that their style may not have scored as well in the BOA format, particularly when competing against bands from other regions (probably different from a California regional where most of the bands were in state).
I would hope that those feelings dont still exist. I mean if you look at the top level bands in BOA over the last several years, their percussion and guard sections are awesome.
It appears BOA is still having difficulties securing facilities to host BOA regionals in California. There will also continue to be a hefty cost for a California band to make the trip to Grand Nationals. But yes, there have certainly been many California bands over the decades that would have had much succes at Grand Nationals. Dont forget, the very first band to win the Grand National title was a California band.

My high school experience was Southern California, but having been in the Army for 15 years, I’ve seen bands from all over, eventually settling in Ohio-finally able to go to GN on a regular basis. My band kids are almost to high school and so I’ve been paying more attention. Love this site and your history of the activity.

Grand National Finalists (1976 - 2021); excluding the 2020 season of course. This will exclude the summer nationals of the 1980s. From 1976 to 1979, bands were split in two class and finals consisted of the top 6 from each class. From 1980 to 1990, finalists consisted of the top 12 from prelims and the top two from each class if they were not already part of the top 12. From 1991 onward, finalist bands were chosen based on the top group from prelims (then later semi finals) regardless of class.
