I was fortunate enough to hear a mock-up of their show music via a staff member. Y’all ain’t ready for Vista this year. That music book is straight FIRE. Will this be another case of a Texas band not going to GN with their best show? 🫣

Well, the people that plan and design the shows are not usually the ones who plan and execute the trips. I don’t feel show design and getting to Nats are in any way related, especially for the groups that can consistently afford the best of the best regardless of expensive trips. I think it could also be a matter of designers and directors doing the old “how can we top ourselves since we’re doing Nats” and in effect overthink and overwork their program. Years with more relaxed travel and less pressure overall yields a product that is perhaps less “forced.”

I can buy into the idea that the demand is too high for those overthought and overworked programs.

Agreed on all points. Just do shows like you normally would do if it's working for you. No need to over-program. We already love what you're doing!

It is an expensive and important trip, and I can see how there may be pressure for an amazing show design since they don't get to attend every year.

If Lake Hamilton goes all in on that theme, that's going to be a really fun show. But then I already love a good dark show. 😈🎃

Of the ones we've seen thus far, I'd say 'Children of the Corn' is the most intriguing concept of the season... with 'Wednesday' a very close second. Love to see people trying something truly new.

This is the first time Cartwright has worked with them, their most notable shows “Muse” (2019) and “Marionette Madness” (2021) were Stevens productions I think.

Lakeville South HS., MN: " 26.2" - "In a nod to Greek history, the first marathon commemorated the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield near the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C. According to legend, Pheidippides ran the approximately 26.2 miles to announce the defeat of the Persians to some anxious Athenians. Not quite in mid-season shape, he delivered the message "Niki!" (Victory!) then keeled over and died." I believe it's about this.

I've heard some good things about VR as well. Very curious to see where they place this year They had a slight shakeup with staff, losing a head director. They did promote an assistant director to head though, so that definitely smoothens the transition a little bit. They’re also not designed by Vento and her team for the first time since 2019, so it’ll be interesting. To clarify - It was the head marching director - Reid Atkinson - who left. That's probably what you meant, but just wanted to be clear. Bryan Christian, the head director, is still in place. Zach Santos, who started as Vista the same year that Reid did and did so right out of college, is now the head marching director. He's a young guy for such a position, but he is truly special and the kids absolutely LOVE him. They would run through walls for him. He's really talented and brings a lot of energy and innovative thought to the table. I was at the preview performance Vista did right before the end of the school year. They played selections from multiple parts of the show and I have to agree about the music book - It is going to be impressive. One of my kids, who is an alum of the band, was with me and he got goosebumps listening to the opener. Should be fun to see how it plays out.

Even though it happens every year, my brother and I are always shocked when a video of a Leander ISD band's show preview is posted. They start learning music before Keller even announces the show to the students lol. Always interesting to see how different programs operate.
