lol as much as I love a great Dia de los Muertos show, I hear ya! But if any band could do it justice, it’s Eastlake. 🥰🥰 COME TO SAN ANTONIO EASTLAKE!!! While I think this show is actually still a Day of The Dead Show based on the title I totally expect Eastlake to be the band to give it justice and perform a genuinely authentic tribute to it I just can’t wait to see what they do with it. I love this band and guard so much!

Cary H.S., NC: " The Age of Opulence" This is by far the best show teaser image I have ever seen. If there were awards for show teaser images, this would not only win, but the award would be named after Cary High School for the rest of time.

At the DCI show last night, I noticed Centerville band members were wearing t-shirts reading "Gem City." Is that the name of their 2022 show? That's also a nickname for the city of Dayton. - - - - - - - - - - - Edited much later (9/12/22) to note that their musical selections as announced at the Northmont premiere are: Rihanna's "Diamonds" (Sia Furler, Benjamin Levin, Mikkel S. Eriksen, & Tor Erik Hermansen) Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever" (John Barry & Don Black) "All Blues" (Miles Davis) Donald Fagen's "Ruby Baby" (Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller) Diana Ross's "Home" from The Wiz (Charlie Smalls) I wish bands would be more careful about this. The announcement at Northmont (with text surely supplied by Centerville) mentioned only one of the ten songwriters listed above (Miles Davis), instead identifying the musical selections as, e.g., "'Diamonds Are Forever' by Shirley Bassey" and "'Ruby Baby' by Donald Fagen." But to take the last example: Leiber & Stoller wrote "Ruby Baby" in 1956, when it was first performed by The Drifters. Fagen didn't cover it until 1982. (And I think their version owes as much to the the 1962 cover by Dion & The Belmonts (which reached #2 on the pop charts) as it does to Fagen's take. Nice trombone soloist, though!) Maybe marching bands would have more success with licensors if they had a pattern of giving proper credit.

Jenison H.S., MI - “Heart of the Jungle” If it's as visually immersive as last year's production was, I can only imagine how extraordinary this show is going to look. Saw Jenison’s community performance last night. They are definitely going to bring you to the “heart of the jungle,” with music and props. Looking forward to it!

After checking more than two dozen Ohio bands' sites (including Hilliard Darby, Milford, Kings, Olentangy, Dublin Coffman, Kettering Fairmont, Forest Hills, Dublin Jerome, Brunswick, Teays Valley, Marysville, Hilliard Bradley, Worthington Kilbourne, Berne Union, Fairfield, Pickerington Central, Bellbrook, Licking Heights, Thomas Worthington, Revere, Finneytown, Norton, Piqua, and Milton Union), I found just five show titles, none for bands that (as far as I know) are attending BOA events this year: Grove City H.S., OH: " Call Sign: Greyhound" The show is billed as "a musical and visual representation of flight," and the repertoire consists of: "To Tame the Perilous Skies" (David Holsinger), "New Century Dawn" (David Gillingham), "The Real Hero" from Avengers: Endgame (Alan Silvestri), "Star Sky" (Thomas Bergersen),* "12 Seconds to the Moon" (Robert W. Smith),* "Flight of the Bumblebee" from Tsar Saltan (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov). *The announcement actually says " Start Sky" and "12 Second to the Moon," but these are surely typos. North Royalton H.S., OH: " Carpe Diem!" The repertoire was not listed. Perry H.S. (Massillon), OH: " To Boldly Go..." Perry's repertoire consists of "Enterprising Young Men" from Star Trek (Michael Giacchino), "100 Airplanes on the Roof" (Phillip Glass), "12 Seconds to the Moon" (Robert W. Smith), and a ballad I know I've heard before but can't remember the name of. It wasn't so many years ago that Perry played "100 Airplanes," so its reappearance in 2022 surprised me. Bloom Carroll H.S., OH: " Journey Into the Unknown" The repertoire was not listed. Eastern Brown H.S., OH: " Mad World" Eastern's repertoire consists of "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Mad World" (Roland Orzabal),* and "The End Game" (Luke McMillan). *It always annoys me when bands list the composer of this song as Gary Jules (all he did was slow it down), although in this case I blame Luke McMillan, who appears to be a professional marching band designer who did the arrangements on these pieces for a package originally called reIMAGINEd.

I’m very excited about this show now! I’m a big fan of classy concepts and color schemes. I don’t see them on any BOA schedules- anyone know where they’re headed this year? It sounds like they’re pretty prolific in USBands and on the state level. I’d love to get the chance to watch them if possible!

I would love to see them do BOA but they will most likely be doing Bandmaster Championships and maybe COC, but mostly local shows. Plus, they stopped doing USBands since 2017. In term of state level. I would rank them the 6th best band in Tennessee for the 2021 season (Dobyns-Bennett HS, Franklin HS, Elizabethton HS, Siegel HS, Bartlett HS) . In Bandmaster Championship Munford HS has won 20 times going back to the mid 90's (btw the band with second highest number of wins is Ripley H.S., TN with just 5 wins). However, in 2021 Munford lost their 25+ years streak of finishing top 2 in Bandmaster Championships as they place 3rd behind DeSoto Central HS and Bryant HS. They have always stayed in top 3 in USSBA Group VI Open Nationals and won 2011 their last time in USSBA VI Open Nationals. In Contest of Champions they were second in 2013 behind Franklin HS by 3 points and 4th place in 2021.

Statistics like this really make me wonder how many potential GN semifinalists (and even finalists) just don’t participate in BOA. I appreciate you looking into this!
