Was very intrigued by Vessel's production. I know they're competing in exhibition this year, but I was surprised to see a world class sized drumline next to five horns. Were they going for a sort of indoor program but outdoors?
I think Impulse updated their uniforms a little bit. I don't recall them having a "sash" of exclamation points across their chests.
So far I've been liking what I'm seeing from these SoCal open class groups. Of this group, only Gold will be attending championships in Indy, but I still like to keep up on what the other groups out west are up to.

Some thoughts on the world class groups:
The Academy's show design reminds me of their mid 2010s shows. That's my favorite period in their history, so it's cool to see them embrace that again. Their biggest flaw has to be their visual program, which will need some serious work if they intend on making a finals run.
The Mandarins came to impress and show that their 2018 and 2019 finals runs were not flukes. I was really impressed by them. This is a show I currently expect to see on finals night.
Santa Clara Vanguard!!! What a beautiful musical program, as always. Those props are SCARY though with how they move while the members climb them. I also don't think they had their closer ready in time, as the show seemed to end with their ballad. Yikes. I see this show being in contention for a medal for sure, if not gold. I fully expect the Blue Devils to be in front of them until that closer makes its way onto the field, so I would say any scores between the two won't be indicative of the way the season will go for now.
Pacific Crest is moving in the right direction. They are certainly building the musical and visual tools they need to make finals in the near future. However, this program's design leaves something to be desired. The inclusion of old props from other corps doesn't seem to be explained at all, which was really disappointing for me. They seemed to be missing at least a dozen members, especially in their low brass sections. Looooots of open spots for anyone looking to march this summer, not just at PC.
Overall, here are the results I expect to see.
1. Santa Clara Vanguard --gap-- 2. Mandarins --big gap-- 3. Pacific Crest 4. Academy --gap-- 5. Gold --big gap-- 6. Golden Empire 7. Impulse

Pacific Crest's score is much farther from The Academy's than I would've expected. It bodes poorly for them this season, unfortunately, if this is how the judges will feel about their show.
I don't know if I've ever seen the Mandarins score this closely to SCV. Good stuff, Mandies!
That score for Impulse seems a bit harsh to me. I would've had them in the low 40s for sure. That's the lowest score anyone's received since 2014. Hopefully they can bounce back and come out strong for the rest of their season, as I have a soft spot for them. I personally hate to see a corps receive a score under 40, as I think that does nothing but crush morale.

Looking at the recaps, Pacific Crest wasn't too far off from Academy in Music, but Visual & GE were noticable gaps. The visual gap can be closed with cleaning and getting more bodies on the field, but not sure how to approach the GE gap. As for why Pacific Crest were missing a bunch of members, that is unknown to me. Again, only the first show of the season. A LOT is going to change between now and August

They voted to end that, and now all corps are being judged on the same sheets. Also, why the hell is the West Coast basically a week ahead of everyone else?

When I participated in the old Division 2 & 3, scores in the 20s were not uncommon for some groups in the early DCM tour weeks which used the same sheets as the Div 1 corps. Of course, that was a lost universe of neighborhood corps in the Midwest who are now sadly extinct. For that same reason, i.e., I am old, it still seems odd to me that we’re this late in the summer before the first competitions.

Even ignoring the impact to GE score, a guard of equal strength to the rest of their visual program would have brought them up to roughly 38. Also, MAJOR kudos to their ONE trumpet player. That's some courage right there. As for Pacific Crest, while I was watching I couldn't help but feel like they lost that 2019 magic, both in design and membership. I thought for sure they'd have no trouble recruiting after that fan-favorite season, even considering the events from the past two years. Even then, the design just doesn't feel as strong as 2019, which can be a real momentum killer with further recruiting.

Can't tell if I'm head over heals or if I hate BD this year, but they're definitely ring contenders this year even though I've heard that the corps their fielding this year is extremely young.
I really love Vanguard's show this year and I would probably expect them to medal unless Cavies, Boston and Bloo all have really strong years.
Honestly I wasn't very impressed with Mandarins design wise and while I think they have a strong corps, I don't know if they'll have enough room to grow to squeeze into finals this year, especially with "semi finals" corps like Madison and Troops sounding and looking really good this year.
Academy and PC both had nice shows but I don't see either making a finals appearance, which is disappointing but expected. Academy definitely has my favorite show of theirs since 2016 but it is insanely dirty and PC's brass sounds like a low 20s BOA band even if I like the music they're playing.
Honestly the West Coast corps are usually very set in stone on how they'll place every season and I don't expect too much variation from where everyone scored in 2019, but I am very interested to see how they all stack up against everyone else, as corps like Cavies, Boston, Bloo and Crown are always super volatile with how they score.

I think you’re being way too harsh on Mandarins. Last two seasons they didn’t “squeeze” into finals, they made it pretty solidly. Troopers and Scouts sound good but I’m not sure that’ll transfer to competitions
I think it’s time we stop treating Mandarins last two very successful seasons as a fluke and start seeing them as the genuine contenders they are, especially with the scores they’re putting up

I haven't see any shows so far this year so I cannot comment on any content. But is that SCV uniform actually their uniform for the season or is there something missing?
