I'm hoping that in these next few competitions that Troopers are able to raise that GE score. As of last night theyre almost on par with Academy in Vis with only a .15 difference, and are ahead of Academy rn in terms of music by .05. The .9 difference in GE score really stings in comparison to those to and while they're obviously a bit newer to the field this season it feels a bit off for how visually complex their show is for it to be lagging behind so bad.
Their drumline is also really really good this year but guard seems to be falling behind the rest of the corps.

They have had a marginal judge at their shows... Same judge posted some questionable scores at ISSMA state finals last year. |

Unfortunately, it seems that The Cavaliers issues with COVID have not got any better. It's now gotten to the point where they have withdrawn from the Eau Claire show entirely, with no standstill performance. I hope they rest up and recover, so they can come back stronger in time for Texas Tour next week.

So after thinking about it, here are my thoughts on The Thunder of Drums.
To start off, some background about the show. This show is held at Blakeslee Stadium on the campus of Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN. The field itself is natural grass, while the stands are solid concrete, which creates a bit of an echo on the field. The front sideline is so close to the stands, that lead drum majors have to go into the stands to conduct. On top of that, yard lines were only marked by sideline markers. The weather for the show was nice, but close to the end, rain showers (which were of course, not forecasted) threatened to end the show early. Thankfully, it didn't start pouring until after the show had ended.
As for the groups themselves there were 8 groups. 2 Soundsport groups, 1 All Age Class group, 2 Open Class groups, and 3 World Class groups.
Minnesota Brass and Chops, both based out of Minneapolis, were the Soundsport groups. Both performed in exhibition and were not given scores. They both had incredibly fun shows. Shout out to Chops though for having an engaging show with only FOUR hornline members (1 Mello, 1 Baritone, 1 Trumpet, and 1... Flute?).
Govenaires were fun too. A bit smaller than I've seen them before, with a very small drumline, but I had fun with their show.
Colt Cadets show felt a bit too simplistic for me, but definitely seemed to be very clean overall. River City Rhythm has a prop that would probably break height rules set by BOA. Overall, they had a decent show but still have more to add on, musically and visually. That being said, I do expect that both these groups will be in OC Finals in Marion.
Honestly, Madison left me a bit disappointed. I liked their music, but the visual package left a lot to be desired for me. Granted, crazy things do happen in drum corps, but I don't see this show making it to Saturday night. I really want to see Madison make it back to finals again soon. I just don't think it will be this year.
Going into last night, my favorite Colts show was from 2014, which barely missed out on getting into finals. I wouldn't say that The Silk Road is my new favorite Colts show, but I do think it's going to present them their best chance to get into finals since then. I could easily see this show making it to Saturday night. Definitely needs a little bit more cleaning, but I really love their brass & percussion book. It's going to be interesting to where they end up placing at San Antonio against Blue Knights, Crossmen, Music City, Troopers, and Academy.
Phantom's show is very good. I really loved their closer. I can definitely see this placing as high as 7th, and it'll be interesting to see where they line up against The Cadets and Mandarins.
Overall, a really fun show and I had a fun time. My next drum corps outing is going to be a big one. I unfortunately can't make it to Indy this year but I'm going to the next best thing, NightBEAT in Winston-Salem, NC.
