Scholastic World is going to be great at Finals this year with a very strong group of entries top to bottom. I just wish there was more opportunity for theses groups to meet before Finals. Only Avon, Plymouth and Greenfield in Indiana and Burleson and Azale in Texas have competed straight up in a WGI regional this year. The Indiana groups compete in the same circuit at the state level as well.

I'm excited to see more Indepent world groups compete this year😩 Me too! Orion Winds was founded sometime in 2018 and is based in the DFW Texas area. One of the founders was Shayne O'brien (the Bluecoats 2016 winking trumpet soloist) and they scored a few points higher than Crossmen at WGI Dallas. My brother is maybe thinking about auditioning at some point in the future.

So I had a chance to see the Indiana bands at the IPA state finals.
Greenfield and Avon are a cut above Plymouth and Decatur Central. Lewis Cass showed very well and I wish they would try WGI Finals.I think Avon and Greenfield have a good chance to medal at Finals.
Only thing that gave me pause...It appeared from the stands that Avon had a kid fake a trumpet solo to end the show and their final musical hit was all backtrack and not the kids playing.

General impressions after Scholastic World prelims
1. It is nice to see a strong musical performance rewarded with the top score. 2. Bias is real as at least one score is running 1.5-2 points hot due to name and reputation. 3. If you want to perform a guard show, enter last week in the guard championships. When a third of your group appears to not know how to play the instruments they are dancing with there is a problem. 4. I wonder if there is a sweet spot for size of a group. 5. Overall decent judging with only 3 placings that didn’t match the general consensus of the people around me.
Overall take on the Winds activity... Music should matter. Scoring should mirror percussion (60% music based and 40% visuals) and not over credit visual and effect.

Where do you think crossmen should place?

In my opinion, champions should be... Scholastic A- Ardrey Kell HS Independent A- Daviess County HS Scholastic Open- South Jones (trumpet player was fantastic) Independent Open- Chromium Scholastic World-  Cleveland (although Avon should be very close) - also Burleson Centennial's show was emotional and amazing Independent World- Stryke Wynds (if Rhythm X wins, it's because of visual) I can’t say I disagree with much of this. I would quibble on a few things (I don’t think Avon has the visual or effect power to make it over the hump and I say this as someone who thinks those categories are overvalued). I agree that Burleson has an emotional show they performed well, but it is probably the 3rd version of that show theme (including the use of Cat’s in the Cradle) I’ve seen. Credit to them for a middle section with some really great music. I still stand by point 3 above. Recaps are interesting reading.

I agree with the fact that effect should be less focused and music should be the most focused since it's a better atmosphere to listen closely. There's a reason why wgi is increasing in popularity and it's the difference between the winter programs and marching programs in terms of focus and entertainment. Each faction of wgi gives a chance to target specific audiences and show the amount of individual skill where people can show them off, something you can't always do on the football field. In this case, I think Winds should be focused more in terms of risks and cleanliness of music. As of now, I still don't understand what wgi winds specifically looks for in groups and what see is judging the same way they judge on the football field. Although I do think that GE being 60% of score in the BOA Circuit makes the most sense because of how everything has to come together to work, wgi brings the opportunity to have each group exceed in their skill.
