Hi everyone! Here is the 2022 Oklahoma band breakdown you did not ask for but I am giving regardless. Super excited for this season all around! I expect this is going to be a very interesting year, with some fun surprises on the way. There are a LOT of Oklahoma bands competing in BOA contests this go around, which I think is a testament to the increasing competitiveness being seen statewide in marching band. Last year, we really started to see some of the OKC metro area bands start to blossom and truly compete with the Tulsa powerhouses. Will we see this trend continue? Will new Oklahoma bands start to dominate the competition? Will previous champions be dethroned? Will we see even perhaps a new Oklahoma band in Grand National Finals? All questions which will be answered in the following months, and I am literally so pumped.
Oklahoma Bands competing in BOA by competition:
Midland Regional Piedmont H.S., OK
St. Louis Super Regional Berryhill H.S., OK Broken Arrow H.S., OK Mustang H.S., OK Southmoore H.S., OK Yukon H.S., OK
North Texas Regional Choctaw H.S., OK Owasso H.S., OK
Johnson City Regional Coweta H.S., OK
Indianapolis Super Regional Jenks H.S., OK Union H.S., OK
Orlando Regional Washington H.S., OK
Grand National Championships Broken Arrow H.S., OK Deer Creek H.S., OK Mustang H.S., OK
Clearly, a lot going on here. Definitely a crazy year ahead, and it really is great to see so many groups going. It gives me hope that there may one day be an Oklahoma BOA event. I feel like there would be plenty of participation, especially when you rope in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. Below, I will provide some commentary on a handful of bands from around the Sooner State.
Broken Arrow - I have not heard much from them/what is being planned, but given that I live in BA, that is likely not going to be the case forever. Excited to see what they produce this year, especially with some staff changes. I know they will be working hard to keep Kevin in Oklahoma for another year. Will they be able to pull it off? I sure hope so.
Owasso - More of a quiet year as far as BOA goes for this group as they are only attending one Regional. We can also expect to see them at the Owasso Invitational (obviously), Renegade Review, and 6A OBA where they will be fighting hard to keep 2nd place.
Mustang - I just know this group is hungry to make GN finals, and I think this year they have a decent shot. I am excited to see their show, and I am hopeful that they can make it happen.
Bixby - I saw a portion of their 2022 show "Madness" and I am so impressed by how big they have gotten! I am also excited to see some more members in the color guard, because I feel like in previous year the guard has been disproportionately small. Despite not going to any BOA events this year, I think they are going to have a strong showing and will make OBA so interesting to watch.
Jenks - They are BACK in the BOA circuit this year, and I am so ready. They never hold back from putting on entertaining productions, and I feel as though this year will be no different.
Yukon - Despite some recent changes in staff, it is going to be so awesome to see them compete at their first BOA contest this year! Given their geographical proximity to Mustang and a long-standing rivalry, it was only a matter of time before we saw them start pushing the envelope. After a breakout season last year, I am excited to see what they have in store for us this year.
Union - Union is here to play this year, y'all. I saw a video of them recently, and the difference from last year is night and day. Very excited to see them getting through the rough patch.
Choctaw - After their first Super Regional Finals appearance last year, you know Choctaw is more motivated than ever to keep climbing. Heck, they decided to go to Texas for a challenge! It will be fun to see how they stack up at the North Texas Regional.
Edmond Santa Fe - This is a group I expect to see climb this year. Their show "Outside the Box" is entertaining and a huge leap up in difficulty level from last year. I don't know if BOA is on the horizon for them or not, but one way or the other they are out to compete this year. I predict they may be a dark horse group and should for sure be an interesting group to watch.
Southmoore - Last year's 10th place OBA finalist, Southmoore has consistently been a fun group. I am glad to see them getting back to the BOA circuit, and I wish them the best of luck at their competitions this year.
Deer Creek - The Antler Pride made huge leaps last year as they attended OBA for the first time in many years (if ever) and just narrowly missed finals. With some other pretty impressive competition placements last season, they are making yet another jump to Grand Nationals this year! I will be excited to see where they place.
Coweta - Never a good idea to underestimate this band. As former Regional champions, I am glad to see them return to BOA.
Piedmont - The 2021 5A OBA champions are making a long-awaited return to BOA, and I couldn't be more excited. They will have some fierce competition at Midland, but they are up to the challenge.
There are many other bands in Oklahoma which I would love to hear reports on. I just am so ready for the season to start and wanted to get the Oklahoma crew hyped as well! My apologies if there are any typos, inaccuracies, or any other mistakes. Gonna be a great year!!

Nice to see Edmond SF playing that O’Fallon piece from a few years ago. It’s so energetic.
The Edmond groups always play so well, and Santa Fe has long had one of the best concert programs in the state. Excited for them!

Coweta has been confirmed to not be going to the Johnson Regional by one of the band parents now sadly. Is this Coweta, OK or East Coweta, GA? Coweta still has it on their band calendar, and I know there was some previous discussion about East Coweta being unable to attend.

I had only seen Coweta, OK and thought they were simply taking about them. That is 100% my bad. Sorry for causing confusion! I should have read more closely. That was East Coweta in GA. That's the problem with schools with the same or similar names in multiple states. 😅 😓

Yukon is about halfway done with their show. They’ve completed 2 of 4 movements. We had a parent preview last Friday, but I don’t know if we are free to share any info yet so I’ll hold off. If I hear it’s okay then I’ll share my video. I think the show is pretty dynamic, there is a lot going on. Becca Anderson is our show designer and I’ve heard good things about her, but I’m far from an expert. She’s visiting this week to see how things are progressing.

While we’re discussing Oklahoma, does anyone have a lineup for the Broken Arrow Invitational this year? I’ve seen pretty much every other medium-interest Invitational on here. It’s listed on Midwest Marching, but there isn’t any info on enrollment.

I keep checking Midwest Marching and the Pride website to no avail 😣 as soon as they publish the list I'll post it unless someone manages to beat me. I'm hoping they've upped their enrollment a bit. Last I remember, it was surprisingly small.

All that I can find is the website saying that the schedule is “Coming soon.” I’ll be sure to post it here if I see anything! Another fun contest to watch this year will be the Mustang Invitational, which I believe is the same day. Union is making the trip this year, so it’ll be interesting to see how everyone stacks up there!

It is not but now I feel an obligation to cheer for them. Wyoming may be a little far to travel for state championships though…Although I’ve gone pretty far to watch band!

No one asked but here they are anyways: My Oklahoma Top Ten for the 2022 Season
1- Broken Arrow. This is pretty obvious, but they’re defending Kevin now, so they’re sure to come out the gate stronger than ever. It’s time for their back-to-back win. 2- Mustang. Not being second at OBA lit a fire under them, and not making finals at Nationals added kindling. This is supposedly their Finals push year, so they’re going to be the best mustang we’ve ever seen. 3- Owasso. They were second in OBA last year. I don’t think they’re going anywhere lower than this anytime soon. 4- Bixby. It’s Bixby. Their show style is very unpredictable, so I never really know how to react to them, and never really know what to say about them in the preseason. 5- Yukon. They look GOOD this year. They’re pushing for STL and will either be in finals or right out of finals. It’s a big year for Yukon. 6- Jenks. They’re not going anywhere. They fell off a bit last year, but I’ve got a feeling they’re coming for the proverbial throat this year. 7- Choctaw. It’s Choctaw. With Bixby moving up to the other 6A group, they’re going to take their division. Super excited to see where they go with their show concept. 8- Santa Fe. This year’s show sounds very interesting, and they sound real good, so I’m excited to see what they’ve got for us. 9- Union. I desperately want to say that they will do better. Their competition has just gotten too good. But I really want them to do better, I just don’t know if they will. 10- Deer Creek. I know, I know. It wasn’t expected. BUT they’re going to Nationals this year, so they will most likely being pushing to the finish stronger this year. My money would on them not missing OBA finals again.

I believe their show is called "ConnexUS."

Union in 9th feels like such a fiery hot take even with a single down season. We'll certainly know more this season though on what trajectory the program is moving in though. So many programs just had different experiences and recovery plans because of Covid that we'll still continue to see this lingering effect for a few more years I'm sure. Let's hope they have a nice rebound though!

Saw a video of Mustang from their football game last night. I can tell they are continuing to improve on last year, and I think by Grand Nats they will be a force to be reckoned with. Definitely dirty at times, but that also comes with it being early in the season. I am not sold on the show concept yet, but I think that when they add some elements like costuming, props, etc. that it will probably come together quite nicely.

We have gotten the okay to share Yukon’s show. Sorry for the giant logo on the screen, it’s a screen grab of the football game’s livestream because I was working concessions. It’s not the best recording so far as seeing well because it’s not a band person recording but you get the idea. It’s movements 1-3 of 4.
LOTS of cleaning left to do but I love the music arrangement!
