I was going to put my 5A and 6A OBA predictions in one post, but given how they're a week apart and we still have a bit more to see from most of the 6A bands, I decided to make separate posts, so my 6A predictions will likely be here sometime next week. Anyways, that said, we are officially less than 10 days away from 5A OBA. With these being my old stomping (marching?) grounds in high school, I find it crazy that we're already this close to what is considered by most bands in this class to be a season-ending contest. It's been a crazy one for these bands, too. The race to the top is more tense than ever, and as proven many times before, my predictions will probably not be correct lol. So, without further ado, my 5A OBA predictions, as of 10/13:
1. Piedmont - maybe I’m biased here, but their season so far has led them with good omens, even with them out of finals at Midland. Their show may be on the simpler side compared to the others they’re fighting for this top spot with, but they execute it incredibly well, and the audience appeal surely doesn’t hurt things either. Their show, combined with how they’ve done so far, and a good draw in finals could be the perfect storm for another back-to-back championship.
2. Collinsville - These guys are also having an incredible season, and they’re hungry for what would be their first state championship since their domination of 4A/5A OBA in the early 2000’s. They got close in prelims last year, and they’ll be looking to replicate those results again this year. Plus, with no GN trip this year, their show is definitely going to peak here.
3. Coweta - Perhaps the spiciest placement in this prediction list. Topped by both Piedmont and Collinsville in the early season contests they attended, these guys aren’t going to be fazed by it and will clean like crazy, knowing them, and they’ll lay down a finals run that will show they’re not giving up so easily. Plus, Johnson City this weekend could be a signal of things to come for them. They’re going to round out what’s going to be a very tense three horse race for first.
4. Sapulpa - With Tahlequah having moved up to 6A, Sapulpa will eagerly slide into that coveted spot outside the airtight 5A Top 3. They’re going into this one having won Oologah and Bixby this year, so they’ll definitely be riding those highs to try and medal here. I would be absolutely shocked if that happened, but Sapulpa would be the band to do it!
5. Carl Albert - Carl Albert is no stranger to competition for the top, and with them keeping their director from last year in a year where it seems like everyone has changed directors, they’ll be looking to take advantage of that and try to break into 4th. They’ll have to face a strong Sapulpa to do so, however.
6. McAlester - Rounding out the top 6 is McAlester, and while I haven’t seen much from them yet this year, these guys consistently put out fun shows that are of clean quality, and after hitting 7th last year, they’ll be aiming to round out the top 6.
7. Guthrie - It’s been hard to see Guthrie struggle in the bottom six the past couple of years, as they’re just so good and fun to watch. But, even with this, one thing that hasn’t changed with them is that the product they’ll put out come OBA will be clean, and based on what I’ve seen so far, they’ll be fighting with McAlester to break into the top half again.
8. Shawnee - Same deal with these guys as Guthrie, though they’ll be looking to improve on their 11th place from last year. I think, given current circumstances, they’ll be on track to do so.
9. Claremore - These guys are a little harder to predict, as when they’ve made finals in the past, they’ve placed all around the bottom half. They could get 9th, as I’ve placed them here, or they could also get anywhere from 12th to 8th. Due to having not seen anyone below them, though, they’re here for now.
10. Durant - Besides being one of the only high school bands in probably the country that can pull off Aussies, Durant is also going to be a dark horse for placing anywhere in the bottom six. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from them at past OBA finals, and always felt they get a little bit underrated. I’m thinking it’ll happen again this year.
11. Grove - These guys are new to 5A this year, but judging from their 4A results from years past, they’ll be safely in finals here. I can’t see them placing much higher than this, though.
12. Glenpool - New to 5A last year, they also made finals in their first year as 5A. Judging by who else they’re going up against in prelims, I don’t see much reason why they won’t round out finals here.

6 out of 8 Oklahoma bands competing at BOA contests across the nation made finals! The two that didn’t are Choctaw, who won their class and will be performing in exhibition and Berryhill who is class A and did a fantastic job! Just a lot of competition, but I’m sure they were right up there with the best of them! Good day to be an Okie!

I've put together a spreadsheet for the 6A bands going to OBA (sans PC West for the moment as they registered late)! The predictions for the finalists and placements are as follows - 1st - Broken Arrow 2nd - Mustang 3rd - Owasso 4th - Bixby 5th - Yukon 6th - Jenks 7th - Southmoore 8th - Union 9th - Edmond SF 10th - Stillwater 11th - Edmond N 12th - Choctaw 1st Out - Westmoore 2nd Out - Deer Creek 3rd Out - Edmond M I see the groupings as accurate with some specific placement errors. The top four will in my mind be BA, Mustang, Owasso and Bixby just maybe not in that order. Similarly I could see Southmoore doing better than the data would suggest and beating out Jenks but I'd still place Yukon over them despite the scores at STL. If Yukon is anything like last year they will make strides in this next week. We will have to see on Tuesday for OSSAA. I could see Union beating SM or Jenks but not both, I just can't bring myself to to place them higher than 7th this year. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. The Edmonds are pretty much a lock for me with Stillwater either separating them for placing just under Edmond North. Deer Creek looks ready to throw down this year however and I could see them pushing Choctaw out of finals moving Westmoore down to 2nd Out. I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on this! Here's the link to the spreadsheet: 6A Marching Tracker

Jenks’ performance at Indianapolis earlier today was on par with Mustang last weekend, IMO.

I’m going to be posting my 6A predictions sometime this week, but yeah I definitely see Jenks up with the best of them. I think Edmond Santa Fe is going to place higher than that and TBH Edmond North and Memorial are bubble bands to me. I see Deer Creek in this year though.

The stadiums would have to be set up with live-streaming capabilities and then there are those pesky copyright laws….

I beleive it has more to do with copyright laws than anything. It is my understanding that OBA follows BOA rules. These are BOA’s rules for copyright and live streaming:
If you are also planning to participate in Bands of America events or other events where your show may be streamed, we also encourage that you inquire (of the publisher/copyright holder/copyright service provider) whether there may be restrictions or prohibitions on the synchronization (video recording and distribution) of the music you selected and whether the rights’ holder expects unusually high royalties or fees to ensue.
It is all about the money, and I bet OBA does not want to deal with those headaches. This, among other reasons, is why many of the top bands in the country do not want videos posted of their performances. Some have been pulled off of this site due to copyright violations.

Way to go Jenks and Union on making finals at the Indy Super Regional! Jenks also placed in the top half, which is pretty awesome! Also a big shoutout to Washington for representing Oklahoma in Orlando and bringing how the Class 1A music award! Great job all!

6A OBA Predictions
Wow. I am pretty confident this is the most competitive year Oklahoma has seen for marching band in a long time, and that's saying something considering I said the same thing last year! The bar continually gets raised, we are seeing new powerhouses emerging, and what I do know is we will have a few shocks come awards on Saturday (per usual). It was honestly really difficult putting together this list because some of these bands are so evenly matched. It is going to come down to who had a better run. We also have not seen some of these bands in a few weeks, so it is hard knowing where to put them. A lot can change in a matter of weeks! Very excited to see how Saturday goes down.
6A1 Champion: Broken Arrow 6A2 Champion: Choctaw
Finals Placements: 1. Broken Arrow 2. Mustang 3. Bixby 4. Jenks 5. Edmond Santa Fe 6. Owasso 7. Yukon 8. Southmoore 9. Union 10. Choctaw 11. Deer Creek 12. Edmond Memorial
First Out: Stillwater
Here's my logic: Broken Arrow is a pretty easy 1st place...or are they? I would be SHOCKED if BA didn't win, but for the first time I want to throw in a little doubt. I think BA is killing it this year, but what happens in a world where Mustang is progressing more quickly than them? Mustang was not too far behind BA in prelims...could there be an upset? Or even...Bixby? Y'all, Bixby is another level this year with their show. I could very much see them getting 2nd...or even 1st? Highly unlikely, but we have not seen BA and Bixby go head to head this season... who knows! For the record, Bixby has won every state championship in 6A2 since it became a thing in 2014, and they won the 4A-5A OBA championship the 4 years before they became 6A...I genuinely do not think anyone is going to beat BA, but I think that we could see that be a genuine possibility in the VERY near future, which is crazy to think about and also so exciting!
SO back to real talk, I think BA is a solid 1st probably, and then I could see 2-4 going any sort of way. Jenks just had a great showing at Indy, so I'm sure they will appear high in many people's lists. I do agree, they are FANTASTIC this year, so me putting them in 4th is not me saying that they are bad by any means. Mustang is SO GOOD this year and they have been steadily climbing the charts...I think this is the year we see them silver medal. They are a serious finalist contender at Grand Nats this year, and I expect great things from them. Like I have already said, I think Bixby is also on fire. They could definitely sneak in and get that silver medal (but so could Jenks LOL).
Edmond Santa Fe in 5th is a hot take for sure, but I continue to be so impressed by them. Need I remind you all that they beat JENKS earlier this season. The won by a hefty margin the Mustang Invitational, and then we haven't seen them since. Well, they are still so amazing based on some recent videos I have seen. They are giving me top tier band vibes this year, and I think they are just as much in the same playing field as Owasso. Granted, Owasso is also very good and made finals at a Texas competition which is telling! The highest I see Owasso is 5th this year, but I do think ESF or even Yukon or Southmoore could pull off the upset. Speaking of which, Yukon and Southmoore made STRONG showings by both making finals at St. Louis for the first time! I am beyond the moon that they did well there. I put Yukon above Southmoore because they have a tendency to grow a lot late season, which I think could happen here. Southmoore is also doing so well and I absolutely see them in the 5-9 range.
Union! I was so happy to see them in finals in Indianapolis. This was a great accomplishment for them. It's still crazy that they placed 10th at the Mustang Invitational earlier this season. That placement doesn't really fit with them being the same band that just made finals, so it is pretty hard to place them. I don't really think they are better than any of the bands I have above them, so that's why I have them in 9th. Could they place higher? Absolutely. Could they place lower? Yep. I would go as far to say that they are kind of a bubble band to me here, which is insane to say. I feel like they will make finals for sure, but if they did not, I would not be shocked.
I have Choctaw in 10th. I do think Choctaw will make finals here, and they could place higher. I don't see them any lower than 10th. I like their show this year, and honestly I think it is a step up from last year. The competition around them has gotten so fierce, which is the only reason I have them on the lower end. They also had a great showing at a Texas competition and nailed down the 2A class championship, which was awesome! I also think this is their year to win 6A2 since Bixby has moved up, so that is very exciting!
The last 2 spots are DIFFICULT to predict. I really really want to see Deer Creek in, and I think they have a great chance at doing that. They got 2nd in prelims only to Edmond Santa Fe at Mustang, which was way above many of the bands I have listed in my OBA prediction. With Grand Nats on their schedule this year, they are pulling all the stops to put out a good production, and I think that they may have pulled it off. If they do, it will be a great accomplishment for them! I would say they are Choctaw's biggest competition for the 6A2 championship, and I think there is a possibility they could pull it off. I put Edmond Memorial in finals as well, but it could very easily be Edmond North, Westmoore, or Stillwater. All of these bands are about on the same level to me, and I think it is a toss up who makes it in. I out Edmond Memorial on top just because I like their show, and I think they have a good shot at making finals...but who knows. I would say my finals bubble bands list is Union, Deer Creek, Edmond Memorial, Stillwater, Westmoore, Edmond North. Kind of crazy seeing that big of a bubble group at 6A OBA alone!
As I said before, the competition is STEEP this year. I think there are multiple grand national finalist level bands in the group this year (like 4), like 10 (maybe up to 12) bands which could have made finals at the St. Louis Super Regional, and multiple that could have made finals at the Indy Super. Oklahoma bands to me are overlooked many times because we have fewer bands that compete at BOA events (we have had a significant increase in interest the last few years, but even then it is hard when every one is out of state). I've said it before, but I think it is about time we got a Regional here in-state. Scheduling would be an issue because we have such established contests here, but I think they could make it fit if they tried. Really excited for the future of Oklahoma bands! We predicted growth last season, and here we are. It makes you wonder where we will be next year and even a couple years down the road.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I had a fun time putting this list together, fantasizing, speculating, and doing a bit of ranting. SO excited for this weekend!
