I'd like the band with ten tubas who gives those tubas the melody at one point to work on the balance so we can actually hear that over all the stuff coming through the speakers, please. Sunday’s Straight 1s were Miamisburg, Kings, Lakota East, Logan Elm, Hamilton, Finneytown, and Marysville Well, I'll be darned. Both music judges apparently agreed with me. Just curious, are we getting your full review of State Finals this year?

Well, I'll be darned. Both music judges apparently agreed with me. Just curious, are we getting your full review of State Finals this year? Well, since you asked... This was the first year I managed to see all bands performing in OMEA state finals in person since I started attending every day in 2014. Most years I've missed one or two bands live and have had to catch later on video. Of the 120 bands who appeared this year, these would be my top three and caption winners in each class: Class C
1. Eastern Brown, "Mad World" 2. Lynchburg-Clay, "Under the Moonlight" 3. Belpre, "Bump in the Night" Music: Eastern Brown Visual: Eastern Brown G.E.: Eastern Brown Class B
1. Finneytown, "A Winter at the Lake" 2. Van Buren, "Composing the Masterpiece" 3. Arcanum, "Sweet" Music: Finneytown Visual: Van Buren G.E.: Finneytown Class A
1. Louisville, "Mercury Rising" 2. Cloverleaf, "Uninvited" 3. Norton, "To Wish Upon" Music: Louisville Visual: Norton G.E.: Cloverleaf Class AA
1. Grove City, "Callsign: Greyhound" 2. Beavercreek, "Nightmare of Horrors" 3. Lakota East, "la lune" Music: Grove City Visual: Miamisburg G.E.: Beavercreek As I see it the top three in Class A and Class AA were very close. Class B has a clear number one and a clear number two, but there were a number of others close behind number three. Class C had a runaway number one.

Sometimes people at these schools don't know their own history. Some Brunswick students at the 2015 state finals, upon glancing at the program book as it then was, told me that it must be in error, because their director had told them the band never earned a Superior at state prior to his arrival in the 2000s. Did he actually tell them that? (And if so, was he himself unaware?) Or did they misunderstand something he said? Because as you would know, they got a I rating nine times in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time, the state finals program book only showed results back to 1991. I'd like to think I played a small part in getting them to expand that to include the full list. (I do wish they'd kept the grid format they used to use, though.) I corresponded around that time with a director on their adjudication committee, and sent that person my own spreadsheet, in which I'd been able to include the results back to 1990 because I had a 1991 program, which listed that information. (Our college band director recruited a group of students to work state finals at Cooper Stadium in 1991 and 1992. I don't seen to have kept a book for the latter year. I'd really love to collect a full set for all years to date.) There are still some mistakes, I think. Youtube has video of Vandalia Butler performing at state in 1994 and 1995, for instance, but last I checked those performances weren't listed in the program book. I personally have the programs from 1992-94, 2004, 2011, 2013-19, and 2021. They tend to pop up on eBay here and there. I'm still keeping an eye out for 2002-03 and 2005-10 programs so that I can see the listings for Amherst Steele. I also know Bowling Green has copies of the 1987-90, 1998, 2004-08, 2011-12, and 2016-18 programs in their library. Can you check your 1994 SMBF program book to see if (Vandalia) Butler is listed among that year's bands?

Can you check your 1994 SMBF program book to see if (Vandalia) Butler is listed among that year's bands? I found Vandalia Butler listed in the 1994 program. They are listed to have performed on Sunday, November 6, 1994 at 4:45 pm in Class A with 145 members.
Oddly enough, this program only includes past results from 1982-1993, chopping off the first two years of history. I wonder if it didn't fit on the pages.
The previous owner of this program, who I believe was there supporting Maumee, left some notes in Maumee's block of bands. They seem to have written auxiliary, percussion, field commander, and overall ratings for each band in that block. Was there a point in history at which they announced each of these ratings along with the overall rating? I am assuming that these captions did not factor into the overall rating, just as they still don't. If that is true, it's interesting to see that these two lonely ratings left out of the final tabulation used to be a trio. When did they do away with the field commander ratings?
In the interest of sharing some history, I'll type out what the former owner wrote down. It's a little peek into the style of OMEA shows from 1994, since the programs back then did not share any show titles or descriptions.
North Royalton - Class A Auxiliary - 1 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 1 Overall - 1 Notes: "Tracks of Tears" (wondering if this refers to the Smokey Robinson song)
Ross - Class A Auxiliary - 2 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 2 Overall - 1 Notes: "Beatles Medley"
Lexington - Class A Auxiliary - 1 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 1 Overall - 1 Notes: N/A
Maumee - Class A Auxiliary - 2 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 1 Overall - 2 Notes: "Nice music - somewhat slow - nice finish"
Mentor - Class AA Auxiliary - N/A Percussion - N/A Field Commander - 2 Overall - 2 Notes: "Porgy + Bess, Cats"
Groveport Madison - Class AA Auxiliary - 2 Percussion - 2 Field Commander - 2 Overall - 1 Notes: "Shenandoah, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, nice closer"
Pickerington - Class AA Auxiliary - 2 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 2 Overall - 1 Notes: "West Side Story, Flashcubes + Glitz"
Westerville North - Class AA Auxiliary - 1 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 1 Overall - 1 Notes: "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, triangles in guard"

Westerville North - Class AA Auxiliary - 1 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 1 Overall - 1 Notes: "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, triangles in guard" Thank you! It's curious that Butler's 1994 and 1995 appearances somehow got cut from the more recent history. Yes, field commanders used to be judged, and the state finals announcements would be auxiliary, percussion, field commander, and overall ratings. I distinctly remember how our field commander had broken her arm in gymnastics early in the season of my senior year and had to conduct most of the season with one arm, but she was unslinged cleared to use both arms by the time we reached State. She had received Superior ratings in the local shows, but only got an Excellent at State, which was disappointing. Although not as disappointing as our band getting an overall Excellent that year (the last time that happened). I'm not sure exactly when they stopped judging field commanders, but based on the following text from the 2022 guidebook, I'm guessing that 1996 may have been the last year they announced that and other awards at state: I wonder what changes were made to G.E. and Music that year. (I certainly don't recall those ever being announced separately.) Maumee, one of whose fans seems to have bought the 1994 program you now own, attended a BOA event that year: they placed 24th of 27 bands at the Toledo Regional on Oct. 1, with a 3 rating and a score of 52.80. (They had done much better the previous year, placing 14th with a score of 69.10.) In last place at that event was Chaminade Julienne, which is a Catholic school in Dayton. I had a floormate / suitemate / housemate all four years in college who graduated from there, and coincidentally many years later I contracted his younger sister as an actor. Also coincidentally, his older sister had been my older sister's R.A. Finally, a senior tuba player in college was I was a freshman was also a Chaminade graduate. At the 1994 Toledo regional, Chaminade Julienne received a 4 rating and a score of 40.05. As for Westerville North, you can see a close-up on those "triangles in guard" starting at the 3:00 mark here.

I was curious about how bands at OMEA subsequently placed / scored at Grand Nationals, so I've added that information below in bold: At this time (the ratings shown in parentheses are what the judges determined), here's how I would rank the shows at ... Hilliard Bradley, Oct. 29 (43 bands) 26. If Only It Were a Dream (I) -- G.N. Prelims: 75th place, 65.6535. Wild (I) -- G.N. Prelims: 69th place, 68.70- - - - I'd put the I / II divide between #40 and #41 - - - - Piqua, Oct. 30 (23 bands) 5. Now Boarding (I) -- G.N. To Wish Upon (I) G.N. Prelims: 68th place, 68.85- - - - I'd put the I / II divide between #15 and #16 - - - - Piqua, Nov. 6 (27 bands) 1. la lune (I) G.N. Prelims: 26th place, 84.38 ... G.N. Prelims: 93rd place, 60.10+ I have to think OMEA and BOA judges alike both really liked the trombone solo, because otherwise I found this show to be a drag. ++ This one kept getting better over the course of the season. The guard really carried it. (Edit: Thanks to neop216 for the correction of Hamilton's placement.)

I saw them at Watkins on Oct. 8, and it was entirely reasonable for the judges then to give them the overall II rating they received (although I thought they might have pulled off a I, and as we know thanks to og2, their score was 79.74 -- very close). To have improved over five weeks from that level to what I think ranks among their best BOA scores of the past decade is quite admirable, and I have been mulling over whether I placed them too low at State Finals and at Grand Nationals.

Pickerington - Class AA Auxiliary - 2 Percussion - 1 Field Commander - 2 Overall - 1 Notes: "West Side Story, Flashcubes + Glitz" While I believe "Pickerington" of 1994 became Pickerington Central not Pickerington North, I'll still take this as a chance to note that North was still among the schools this year providing volunteers to work at state finals, and I had a chance to ask a North parent myself what happened. She said that it wasn't entirely clear to her. She said there was some sentiment among a group of parents that competitions were too much trouble, but she didn't think the pressure cam entirely from that direction. Not much to add to what's previously been shared, but worth noting, I thought.
