OMEA Hilliard 9/10 1. Beavercreek 81.1 (I) Last year on this weekend Beavercreek scored an 89. I pointed out at the time that seemed high, although Beavercreek tends to start strong and then not improve very much over the course of the season. I hope that this year's much lower first score doesn't bode ill for them but indicates rather that they're taking a different approach.

Scores are made up and arbitrary and cannot be compared to other competitions, whether they’re on the same weekend or different years. For example, see Centerville’s 70 versus Norton’s 82 at differing contests. Rank > Score. Always.

Do you know how to read the score sheets and tell who did well in what, i am reading this and i’m so so lost The far left column has each school’s name in it. Each column after that is a caption or subcaption (music, visual, GE, etc). In each row are scores for each caption or subcaption, with ordinals underneath (1, 2, 3, etc). All of these scores are added up to create a total score for your band. They can be difficult to read at first, but the more you look around and study them, the more they make sense.

Logan Elm: 26th Annual Marching Band Classic5:00 p.m. - NATIONAL ANTHEM 5:15 p.m. - Westfall (C) 5:30 p.m. - London (B) 5:45 p.m. - Southeastern (B) 6:00 p.m. - Circleville (Exhibition) 7:00 p.m. - Logan Elm (B - ratings only) 7:15 p.m. - Canal Winchester (AA) 7:30 p.m. - Olentangy Liberty (AA) 7:45 p.m. - Berne Union (AA) 8:00 p.m. - Lancaster (AA) 8:15 p.m. - Westland (AA) 8:45 p.m. - AWARDS I found that on the Berne Union band website. (By school size, Berne Union is Class C, but they usually compete in A or sometimes, as here, in AA.) - - - - - - - - - - Edited to add: I know that bands competing at the Cambridge show include Perry; bands competing at the Rock Hill show include South Point; bands competing at the Licking Heights show include Watkins Memorial (but that's a gimme), and bands competing at Ottawa-Glandorf include Columbus Grove and Maumee. Also I see that Dawson-Bryant competed last weekend (Sep. 10) in two West Virginia shows, at Spring Valley and Huntington, finishing second (of six) and third, respectively.

I know that bands competing at the Cambridge show include Perry [...] bands competing at the Licking Heights show include Watkins Memorial [...] According to the Fort Frye Facebook page, there will be 7 bands in attendance at Cambridge. I know of five from band calendars: Cambridge, Fort Frye, Marietta, Meadowbrook, Perry. I've also found five Licking Heights attendees from calendars: Licking Heights, Watkins Memorial, Reynoldsburg, Troy, Westerville South. The Pataskala local Facebook groups show that there will be 10 bands at this show. EDIT: I've also found that Marion Harding will be at Ottawa-Glandorf.

I found a list of most of the bands participating in the contest at Rock Hill H.S. (Ironton), but not the order: Huntington (WV), Dawson Bryant, South Point, Portsmouth West, Point Pleasant (WV), Northwest, Wellston, Valley, Symmes Valley, and Rock Hill. That's ten bands, but that page says there will be eleven. (Edited to fix spelling of "Ironton".)

That's ten bands, but that page says there will be eleven. I wonder if 11 refers to an earlier participant count. Groveport Madison pulled out of this competition at some point recently, so maybe that was number 11.

Once again, the merchandise vendor comes through. Thanks to a link on the Teays Valley band website, I found the sweatshirts that will be sold (online only) for the Licking Heights competition, and according to what's printed on the merch, the ten participating bands are Millersport, Shawnee, Teays Valley, Tri-Valley, Troy, Delaware Hayes, Reynoldsburg, Watkins Memorial, Westerville South, and Licking Heights. The order isn't listed, so that part is just my best guess.

OMEA has transitioned to become competitive? I thought they only did rankings like Division 1/2 or Gold/Silver etc. They actually place bands now? Also, can we still pour one out for Pickerington North that will no longer compete and is just a show band now. 😥 I’m still mourning the move of Pickerington North to festival band status. I’ll miss seeing them at shows. I just can’t seem to figure out the why behind it. Really hoping to get to the show at their school next weekend to see if I can get any insider info.

I'll be at Revere next Saturday. Couldn't get to any shows today, unfortunately (nor to see any online). I hope the weather is as nice next week as it is today! I attended the Perkins show tonight. Here's the results, with announced awards in parentheses: Class AA: 1. Avon (Class A/AA Auxiliary, Percussion, Music, 1st Place; Overall Music, Grand Champion) - I 2. Middletown (Class A/AA Percussion, 2nd Place; Overall Percussion) Class A: 1. Avon Lake Class B: 1. Van Buren (Class C/B Auxiliary, Percussion, Visual, Music, 1st Place; Overall Auxiliary, Visual) - I 2. Coventry (Class C/B 3rd Place) 3. St. John's Jesuit Host: Perkins Class C: 1. Ada (Class C/B 2nd Place) 2. Wellington Overall, I thought the judges were quite harsh. I would have given Superiors to Ada, Coventry, and Middletown as well. EDIT: It appears Coventry and Perkins both received a II.

9/17 Louisville Music in Motion Results Thanks! Did the host band (Louisville) qualify for state? Also curious about that. A comment on a Facebook post from the Louisville band yesterday says, "Congratulations on your Superior rating!" but one of the other 21 respondents mention it, and the post itself doesn't say whether or not they got such a rating, reading only, "What an amazing start to the season. We are excited to see what the rest of the year will bring!" That might or might not mean they qualified. Surprised to see Revere so low. Last year I thought they were the best of these nine bands. Good on St. Clairsville for taking visual!
