OMEA has transitioned to become competitive? I thought they only did rankings like Division 1/2 or Gold/Silver etc. They actually place bands now? Also, can we still pour one out for Pickerington North that will no longer compete and is just a show band now. 😥 I’m still mourning the move of Pickerington North to festival band status. I’ll miss seeing them at shows. I just can’t seem to figure out the why behind it. Really hoping to get to the show at their school next weekend to see if I can get any insider info. In regards to this, I did do some digging around on Facebook and found that this move to being a show band is very controversial in the Pick North student/parent community. Apparently, the decision was made for "several reasons," including a survey sent out. It seems that the director is very much encouraging feedback from parents on this move at their booster meetings, so perhaps Pick North will come back to competition in the future. Things must have gotten heated on that post, though, because an admin in the Pick North Band Boosters group promptly locked the post. I did see a video of the band from this year, and they still look and sound great.

In regards to this, I did do some digging around on Facebook ... Thanks for this detective work. As I previously noted, their current director joined them in 2018, having previously been an assistant director at Grove City and having been named in spring 2017 as -- but then withdrawn from being -- the new director at William Mason. It was in 2017, the last year under Pickerington North's previous director, that the school began to appear at BOA events. So it seemed unlikely that this year's decision was driven by the director. When I was a student in northeast Ohio many years ago in a band who appeared only at OMEA events, I remember our confusion when we heard a reference to another band going to "nationals." Our director explained that one reason that he didn't want us to pursue that option was a desire to avoid burnout. I wonder if something like that was in play here? Pickerington North had participated in OMEA events every year since the school was founded, but I don't think they traveled far from greater Columbus. Adding trips out of state (even if just to Indianapolis) may have seemed like too much time, effort, and cost. Perhaps after this year they'll return to the pre-2017 status quo? (To be clear: I have no inside information and am only guessing.)

Over the past ten years, I've seen about 200 different competitive Ohio bands in person or on video, but I'm not sure I've seen any performances by these five groups, or if I have, it was so long that I don't remember (maybe Norwood?): ... Ex. Norwood (II) ... 1. Southeastern 72.16 (II) ... 1. Millersport 64.4 (III) ... 2. Symmes Valley 69.56 (II) ... 4. Elgin 63.92 (III, penalty lowered to IV) And I'm pretty sure I've only seen these six bands on video, never in person: ... 1. Lebanon 59.1 ... 1. Bishop Fenwick 34.8 ... 1. Oak Hills 62.4 ... 4. Goshen 48.1 ... 2. Indian Hill 49.2 ... 5. LaSalle 35.4 Thanks as always for sharing this information!

Wow those MSBA scores seem low. Are the sheets they use similar to BOA sheets? If not, how would they typically translate into BOA scoring system?

Wow those MSBA scores seem low. Are the sheets they use similar to BOA sheets? If not, how would they typically translate into BOA scoring system? MidStates Band Association scores will be more like Band of America scores than Ohio Music Education Scores will be. (The latter will be too high by comparison.) You can look at shows from past years here to see scores at late-season MSBA shows, which you can then compare to scores at BOA Grand Nationals: www.midstatesba.org/past_seasons.htmFor example, here is how the same Ohio bands scored in last year's MSBA championships (at left) and 5-6 days later in last year's BOA Grand Nationals Prelims (at right): MSBA Open 90.20 -- William Mason -- BOA 89.450 87.20 -- Miamisburg -- BOA 83.500 MSBA 4A 74.20 -- Northmont -- BOA 67.025 71.10 -- Springboro -- BOA 70.850 68.90 -- Lebanon -- BOA 67.300 MSBA 3A 77.40 -- Carroll -- BOA 65.150 MSBA 2A (Prelims) 74.60 -- Fairborn -- BOA 64.550 71.05 -- Greenon -- BOA 59.875 64.40 -- Milton-Union -- BOA 65.850 62.90 -- East Clinton -- BOA 57.750 MSBA 1A (Prelims) 75.40 -- Archbishop Alter -- BOA 77.400 67.75 -- Indian Hill -- BOA 64.150 44.85 -- Bishop Fenwick -- BOA 54.400 Mind you, these are different scores for different performances, so you can only ever rough out a pattern.

MSBA sheets are somewhat patterned after BOA sheets, albeit with slightly different rubric interpretations. As noted by N.E. Brigand MSBA scores track somewhat with BOA. Early season shows tend to score lower than BOA while end of season scores are often a little higher. The third week of October seems to be the inflection point.

I think a lot of more independent or regional based circuits don't have as much of an issue with giving lower scores as the national circuits like BOA or USBands do. There are tons of bags scoring <50 at shows in Indiana, OH, and KY right now. I've noticed that those national ones though tend to try to set a floor. BOA 50 (always) and USBands around a 60 to start the season and 80 by seasons end. Trying to compare scores across shows, even within the same circuit, can be a fools errand though.

And if you see a Michigan band scoring in the 70s, it means their raw score was below 60. MCBA takes raw score, divides by 2, and adds 50. Therefore a "70" in Michigan is really a 40 that has been adjusted, an "80" was 60 on the sheets, and so on.

That's just crazy. Maybe Texas has it right by just doing ordinals. I feel dirty saying that though 😆

Their individual performance was fairly average, but I thought their ensemble balance and blending was the best at the show. I will be very surprised if they don't make it to state.
Also, don't worry about any small mistakes, the fact that you're getting these scores for us is STELLAR. Thank you!

It looks like they may have done away with the artificial inflation last year according to the MichiganMarching. "In 2021, MCBA returned to a raw score and will no longer mathematically inflate scores. A pilot project contest, replacing Individual judges with Percussion and Color Guard, was held at Sparta."

I was delighted to see such an unusual top two at Revere considering the competition! Congratulations to Hoover and Louisville for that. A big congratulations to my alma mater as well for winning at Akron. Honorable mention to Union Local for the most fun Little Shop of Horrors show I've seen. I quite enjoyed watching them feed a piccolo player to Twoey. Before they began, one spectator shouted "Do reasonably well!", which I definitely thought they did

There were no awards for Music, Visual, or GE in individual classes. Those awards were grouped into C/B and A/AA.

OMEA Grove City 9/24Class B 2. Heath 78.76 (II) I have not heard of this band before now. I have notes indicating that Heath H.S. competed at the: --OMEA Cambridge competition on Sep. 20, 2014 and got a III --OMEA Watkins Memorial competition on Oct. 11, 2014 and got a II That is the extent of my information; I don't have the placements for those shows (and certainly not the scores). Heath is located in Licking Co., just south of Newark and about 30 miles east of Columbus. Besides Newark and Heath, Licking Co. is home to five other schools who have appeared at least once in a marching band competition over the past decade: Licking Heights, Licking Valley, Northride, Utica, and Watkins Memorial. I'm very disappointed that Northridge didn't return to competing after the pandemic. They were a tiny but entertaining group. - - - - - - - - - - Edited to add random information not about Heath that I didn't want to make a new post for: Ross's show is titled "Fusion" and Deer Park's show is titled "Night on the Town."
