For completists, every little bit of information is of interest. On that note: in Class B at Hamilton, Deer Park took best auxiliary and best percussion.

Forest Hills has a very beautiful show concept and challenging music book. A good amount of cleaning left to do which I think was represented in the score.
Oddly enough Forest Hills show is like a Mashup between the visual of Broken Arrow 21 and the music (at least the opener) of lakota west 21 figments of reality. During that opener I knew I heard it somewhere before and then it dawned on me on the drive home.
Great contest and host!

I have not heard of this band before now. I have notes indicating that Heath H.S. competed at the: --OMEA Cambridge competition on Sep. 20, 2014 and got a III --OMEA Watkins Memorial competition on Oct. 11, 2014 and got a II That is the extent of my information; I don't have the placements for those shows (and certainly not the scores). Heath is located in Licking Co., just south of Newark and about 30 miles east of Columbus. Besides Newark and Heath, Licking Co. is home to five other schools who have appeared at least once in a marching band competition over the past decade: Licking Heights, Licking Valley, Northride, Utica, and Watkins Memorial. I'm very disappointed that Northridge didn't return to competing after the pandemic. They were a tiny but entertaining group. Their score at last night's show indicates that we may get to see them at state. I don't think they've ever done that before. They'll be at two more competitions this season: Licking Valley on 10/8, and Thomas Worthington on 10/22.

MSBA Lebanon 9/24... Class A ... 6. LaSalle 33.9 Wow. As I mentioned before, just six years ago, La Salle was neck-and-neck with Kings. Can anyone share some insights into what that led to this decline? The pandemic clearly exacerbated the problem, but what happened in 2017 that bumped them from the top of Class AAA to the middle of Class AA? That seems to be the turning point. 2012 -- Class AA, 1st place, 78.90 2013 -- Class AAA, 2nd place, 84.40 2014 -- Class AAA, 4th place, 77.70 2015 -- Class AAA, 1st place, 85.60 2016 -- Class AAA, 3rd place, 81.80 2017 -- Class AA, 8th place, 72.60 2018 -- Class AA, 16th place, 67.20 2019 -- Class AA, 10th place, 72.30 2020 -- no competitions (pandemic) 2021 -- Class AA, 19th place, 56.80

They are on at least their third band director since he left.

We have a rare instance of a band with a lower score (Versailles) getting a superior rating and a band with a higher score (Greenville) getting an excellent rating. It's pretty rare to see a band get a II while scoring over 80.
I also note how close National Trail must have been to earning a IV outright. If they had scored much lower, they would've been penalized to a V, which I don't think I have EVER seen. Is anyone aware of any recorded instances of a V being issued, penalty or not? I'd love to hear about it.

Greenville had one judge give them a VERY high score, which is why their score was so high while still getting 3 2s from the rest of the panel. National Trail received a 3 from all 5 judges, so they were not close to an overall 4 on score. I remember hearing stories from maybe 7-8 years of Bradford getting a penalty induced 5 at an early season OMEA show, but I cannot confirm that.

National Trail received a 3 from all 5 judges, so they were not close to an overall 4 on score. I meant in terms of their overall score, which may indicate some 3 ratings in the very low 60s, but I'm not sure how large the penalty was.

One Ohio band will be traveling out of state this weekend: as they did last year, St. Edward will be participating in the LMBA competition at McDowell High School, near Erie, PA. St. Edward won their class (AAA) with a score of 76.425 and were second overall (behind Cochranton, PA with 79.450 in AA) at that Lakeshore Marching Band Association event on Sep. 17

I know there's more than one William Henry Harrison out there, so I'm never sure whether this is the Ohio band or not. I should have remembered Williamsburg and Madison. As for Bellevue, I especially appreciate your correction there because I did check this MSBA 2022 page that lists the bands who have registered so far for championships, and it identifies Bellevue as an Ohio band, so it's good to know that's a mistake.

OMEA Portsmouth West 9/24
... Class C 1. Lynchburg Clay 74.288 (II) 2. Valley 72.176 (II) 3. Symmes Valley 68.226 (III) Just saw that Lynchburg Clay performance. Slow drill, to be sure, and slow music too, but a rich sound for their size. I certainly expect they'll qualify for state again this year. - - - - - - - - - - And then a bit later I watched video of a performance by another band at an OMEA show recently who was scored a low III ... and I think it should have been a IV. Sometimes it does seem like there's a floor below which judges are very reluctant to go.

Two of the four bands that have qualified for every SMBF have qualified in 2022. Troy qualified at their home show on 9/10 and Newark qualified tonight at Valley. Newton's best rating is currently a II at Troy on 9/10, though they compete at Tippecanoe tonight. Marion Local's best rating is also a II at their home show on 9/24. Here's hoping they both manage to qualify.

Some results I've found on social media: Canal WinchesterBerne Union won best music, general effect, visual, percussion, and auxiliary, as well as Grand Champion. They received a rating of I. I had hoped to attend this event but couldn't get free in time to drive down to central Ohio by noon. According to some Hilliard Davidson parents I spoke to this evening, the awards were a fiasco. Apparently due to tabulation error, Hilliard Davidson initially was awarded most or all of those awards, only for them to be taken back and given to Berne Union. It's just three bands: Newark, Troy, and (pending this year's results), Marion Local. Newton failed to qualify in 2006. When that happened, I believe that left five bands who had qualified in every year until Grove City had a school levy fail and didn't compete in 2009. That brought it down to four bands with a perfect streak until Perkins failed to qualify in 2016. (I thought Perkins deserved to qualify in that year more than in some others in which they did qualify.) Also, Valley was a morning show, because I saw Newark this evening at Westerville North, where they did not qualify. Here are the announced results at tonight's show: Westerville NorthClass AA1st - Worthington Kilbourne (guard, percussion) - I 2nd - Hilliard Davidson - I 3rd - Olentangy - I Walnut Hills - I The other Class AA band, Newark, was not announced as qualifying. Classes A & B1st - Bloom Carroll (percussion) 2nd - Franklin Heights (guard) 3rd - Tecumseh There were no other Class A or B bands; none of the three were announced as qualifying. OverallGrand Champion - Worthington Kilbourne - G.E. & Visual Reserve Grand Champion - Hilliard Davidson - Music The two adjudicated host bands, Westerville North and Westerville South, were not announced as qualifying. The third host band, Westerville Central, is a festival band and performed in exhibition. It took a long time for the awards to be announced. It had already been some minutes waiting when the stadium announcer started playing dance tunes to entertain the crowd, and he played four in all ("YMCA," "Hang On Sloopy," "Macarena," and "Cha Cha Slide"). Either they had word about the mix-up at Winchester earlier in the day and were taking a lot of extra care to make sure not to make the same mistakes, or there some really close scores they wanted to triple check. While we were waiting, I got to talking to a former band director (of a band that almost exclusively appeared and appears in OMEA) who was a judge last week at the MSBA Lebanon show that Mason won. He retired about the same time my high school band director did and was well acquainted with him. He said that Mason's show was developing nicely. When I mentioned that the band I'd been in back in the 1980s had its lowest membership this year in more than two decades, he said that his impression across the state was that the worst is yet to come: lots of younger kids didn't start band in the first place during the pandemic. Anyway, I feel strongly that Olentangy should have won all major captions tonight and been the champion, and the people sitting near me in the stands -- including the Davidson parents -- thought so too (although I think the MSBA judge to whom I got to talking down by the track may not have agreed with me), but I did tell them that Kilbourne's design was probably more appealing to the judges, and it did occur to me that the old school music judges in particular might favor the musical style of Davidson. So I was disappointed but not surprised. I am very interested in seeing the scores from this show.

I unfortunately have a feeling that Marion Local's streak will reach its end sometime soon.
