Well those are some fascinating numbers! Weird that the scores at the Teays Valley show go out to three digits.

Yes, there was a mix up at Norton with the tabulation software. Indian Valley received 3 2s and 2 1s from the judges and should have gotten a 2, but a glitch shows them getting a 1, and I don’t believe anyone at the show caught it. I don’t know how OMEA plans to handle it moving forward. Trimble received 3 3s and 2 4s, and their 3s were very low. It’s the closest to a 4 I can remember a band receiving this late in the season in awhile.

OMEA Wilmington 10/8
Class AA 1. Hilliard Davidson 86.0 (I) 2. Kettering Fairmont 85.1 (I) 3. Springboro 84.1 (I) ... Class B 1. Finneytown 85.5 (I) Meaning no offense to Finneytown, which has put on some fine shows in recent seasons; and with much respect to Davidson's entertaining show (but can they please make it so the audience can't hear the metronome they use at the start of every movement?); but: what's up with Kettering this year?

Kettering seems to be struggling a little more this year. Some bands have a slightly delayed impact from COVID. Some bands may not see the effects until next year or maybe later. Some may never have any issues at all. I believe Kettering is having this impact this season.

I think they can do it. I was just talking last week with some former high school pals who graduated a few years ahead of me in the late 1980s. (Now the three of us play in a community band for nursing homes and the like.) Their sophomore year, our band was announced at an afternoon contest as having qualified for state finals for the first time ever, but then they learned that determination had been made in error. They attended a second contest that evening, but they were so deflated that the performance was a bust. To make matters worse, there was another band with a similar sounding name at the evening competition, and the announcer there, either by mistake or out of a misguided sense of fun (to be fair, he was probably unaware of what had happened at the other show) would intone the other, more successful band's name in such a way that further confusion ensued. It was two more years before our band finally qualified. So I appreciated the announcer at Versailles this year taking great care to differentiate "Van Wert" and "Van Buren" during the awards presentation.

Although Van Wert don't have a guard and their front ensemble consists of just one person at a synth whose primary responsibility appears to be to generate deliberately silly sound effects, I put down a score of 79.5 for them, and next to that I wrote, "Or higher?" and "Could they actually qualify?" They did! The judges may have taken Van Wert more seriously than the band intended. I wonder if they'll actually register for State Finals, or whether they'll rest on these laurels. Too tired to write anything more (that was a very long day), except to note that in my opinion, the six C bands, two B bands and one A band that did not qualify all still have a shot at doing so. None seemed so far off the mark that they couldn't clean up enough over the next two weeks to earn that Superior (and in one case, keep that four-decade long streak alive). They announced this achievement very excitedly on their Facebook page. I think they plan to go! What an exciting time for that program. Van Wert is officially on the State Finals schedule. They’ll be performing Sunday, October 30 at Piqua HS.

Is the first Saturday still at Hilliard Bradley? And is the second Saturday again at Medina? I think Brunswick was a better venue: much taller stadium and the concession stands and restrooms are under the stands, so there's a place to get out of the weather if necessary.

Buckeye Classic (Ironton, OH) -- OMEA -- Schedule for Oct 15, 2022 (sources: Ironton band Facebook page; Eastern Brown band website) 4:00 p.m. -- Wellston (C) 4:15 p.m. -- Lynchburg Clay (C) 4:30 p.m. -- Valley (C) 4:45 p.m. -- Symmes Valley (C) 5:00 p.m. -- Eastern Brown (C) 5:30 p.m. -- Portsmouth (B) 5:45 p.m. -- Northwest (B) 6:00 p.m. -- Minford (B) 6:15 p.m. -- Rock Hill (B) 7:15 p.m. -- Portsmouth West (A) 7:30 p.m. -- Chillicothe (A) 7:45 p.m. -- Dawson-Bryant (A) 8:00 p.m. -- Point Pleasant, WV (A) 8:15 p.m. -- South Point (A) 8:30 p.m. -- Ironton (Exhibition) 8:45 p.m. Awards Ironton's "Million Dollar Band" is a festival band. Something interesting about the stadium: the home side seating, which is not very high (looks like fewer than 15 rows), has a roof over it. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Springfield Band Showcase (Holland, OH) -- OMEA -- Schedule for Oct. 15, 2022 (source: Springfield band Facebook page) 5:30 p.m. -- Arcadia (C) 5:45 p.m. -- Adena (C) 6:30 p.m. -- St. John's Jesuit (B) 6:45 p.m. -- Rossford (B) 7:00 p.m. -- Liberty Benton (B) 7:15 p.m. -- Marion Harding (A) 7:30 p.m. -- Springfield (A - ratings only) 7:45 p.m. -- Tiffin Univesity (Exhibition) 8:00 p.m. Awards The classes weren't listed, so I added those based on other events this year. Adena will be a long way from home. I imagine their weekend includes a trip to Cedar Point. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - That leaves just the River View (Warsaw, OH) and Maysville (Zanesville, OH) schedules to be found. Maysville typically includes an ice cream eating challenge that a representative from each of the bands participates in while the awards are tabulated. One band appearing at Maysville will be John Glenn, who performs at 6:30 p.m. Their schedule says the awards are at 9:20 p.m.

NE Brigand, do you have your annual rankings of all 100+ competitive programs? Last year, I actually counted 201 Ohio bands who appeared in OMEA, MSBA, or BOA competition, of which I saw 158 either live (the vast majority) or on video. I've only seen 60 different competing high school bands so far this year (and 9 festival bands). Tomorrow at the Buckeye Invitational, I'll see 32 competition bands (and 12 festival bands), 23 of which I haven't seen yet this year, which will take me to 83. That leaves just one weekend to pump up those rookie numbers before OMEA state finals.

Class B: 1. Buckeye (M, GE) 2. Marlington Class C: 1. New London (M, GE) Exhibition: Oberlin The announcer announced that Marlington had earned both 1st and 2nd in Class B before correcting himself.
Good to see Firestone and Avon Lake get their first Superior since 2019! Those two, St. Edward, and Willoughby South qualified for the first time tonight.
N.E. Brigand Oberlin did in fact play the same set of songs you saw them play. It was entertaining and the crowd seemed to really love them. They got a very large standing ovation at the awards ceremony.

Fort Frye received best Color Guard in class C, as well as a rating of II. The director notes that this was a "high" II. Well, well, that's a bundle of news and no mistake. The Buckeye Invitational results as announced were: Class CAuxilliary: Fort Frye Percussion: Northeastern Visual: Columbus Grove General Effect: Columbus Grove Music: Columbus Grove Superior Ratings: Columbus Grove Class BAuxilliary: London Percussion: Carlisle Visual: London General Effect: Licking Valley Music: Carlisle Superior Ratings: Maumee, London, Licking Valley Class AAuxilliary: Norton Percussion: Norton Visual: Norton General Effect: Norton Music: Norton Superior Ratings: Franklin Heights, Louisville, Norton Class AAAuxilliary: Kings Percussion: Beavercreek Visual: Kings General Effect: Beavercreek Music: Grove City Superior Ratings: Kings, Pickerington Central, Beavercreek, Mentor, Grove City, Newark, Fairfield, Perry, Walnut Hills, Licking Heights, Medina Fort Frye has only 16 members: 5 winds, 6 in the pit, and 5 in the guard. ( Edit: later in the show, 5 members of the pit -- which is on field at the back hash -- switch to battery.) The judges only issued one Superior rating to a band I thought had missed (London) and they only withheld one Superior rating from a band I thought was deserving (Stebbins). Beyond that, however, we disagreed about first place in Class B (I had Maumee ahead by half a point), in Class A (I had Louisville ahead by two points -- not the first time that OMEA's judges have liked Norton much more than me), and in Class AA (I had Grove City ahead by a point) -- but while it seemed clear that Grove City would take best music, I wondered if Beavercreek might nonetheless pull off the upset. And I wasn't sure Kings would hold onto third. Very, very curious to see these scores. In the Festival class, Pickerington North sounds tremendous playing the music of Queen -- even without a pit -- but they move relatively little. (And so many bands played the music of Queen again this year.) Cuyahoga Falls also sounded great. I also had the good fortune to meet a former Grove City band member who posted here once a few years ago in response to something I wrote.
