Grants Pass is BOA Semi Finals calibur. All of those bands can be in BOA. In fact, these shows would have all made for a good BOA PNW regional. Thanks for all the material you put on here about the PNW marching band scene. It has certainly enriched these forums.

Agreed! The Pacific Northwest has always been a bit of mystery to the BOA activity, so it's absolutely terrific to have a perspective view on the happenings up there. Hope BOA will head back up north again soon!

Really want to echo what others have said. With a deep love for this activity and a high level of curiosity, this thread filled a pretty big void in my exposure to the performing arts in this country. The PNW is much too underrepresented in this activity, and seeing some of these performances proves the marching band scene is thriving and deserving of more national exposure. I'm still hanging onto hope that BOA makes an appearance again in the near future. I would be incredibly entertained watching a finalist field of the bands you've been documenting on this thread. Thank you for all this info!

Hey, coming at ya with a fun video that was uploaded today. Sunset HS from Portland, OR has many traditions, but one of their most obvious is what some dubbed the "Power S" formation that they put into their shows. Along with showing instances of the formation, you can also see just how huge Sunset's marching band used to be. New schools opening, community support has shrunken them significantly. I wish bands up here were still as big as they used to be.

I’m really hoping for a comeback regional up here next year. I have a director friend in the Spokane area reaching out to the powers that be at MFA and BOA to see if there has been any movement on a potential event. I will let you all know what I find out.
Is there any reason the University of Idaho wouldn’t be a good location for a BOA show? As weather has always been the issue, the biggest draw is a dome, but I’m not sure about the logistics of the stadium. Could it handle such a large event? The biggest drawBACK however is that it would be a long ways away for most Oregon groups that would be willing to take the trip.

The biggest drawBACK however is that it would be a long ways away for most Oregon groups that would be willing to take the trip. Y'know what... I'm looking into this. Idaho's Kibbie Dome has a max capacity of 16,000. Press box for that stadium is a bit low... Approximate travel times for bands to U of I: "West Side" (Seattle area) bands: 5 hrs, 30 mins Central WA Bands: 3 hrs, 30 mins Spokane area bands: 1 hr, 40 mins Portland area bands: 6hrs Farthest band that would probably want to go (Grants Pass): 9 hrs, 36 mins It gets pretty ugly if Grants Pass, Roseburg, West Salem, and any other Central and Southern Oregon bands want to go. It would most likely have to be an overnighter for them, which some bands aren't afraid of doing. West Salem stayed overnight at a local high school when they went up to Mead, WA this year. Century HS stayed in a hotel and even got to rehearse on the University of Washington field when they came up to Everett, WA. I'll say that weather wasn't bad at all this season. I attended three shows this year, and it only rained at one of them for just a moment in the morning. It did get pretty cold at the later shows though. And rumors this year about NWAPA Championships cancelling finals did come about when the weather was forecasting some nasty rain. It only ended up raining in the middle of the day, and ended up being super tame. What do I recommend? Hillsboro Stadium in Portland, OR. Huge size, can handle plenty of bands, it's a great, tried and true venue. And guess what? It's already been chosen as the site of a BOA regional before, most recently in 2016. Sadly, due to some threatening weather (a TYPHOON, because of course it had to be a typhoon), many bands chose not to go, and the event was turned into an indoor clinic. 2 bands attended. A pretty disappointing final appearance for BOA up here. If BOA wants a show with good weather, it'd have to be an early/mid season show. Late sept. to mid oct. Any later than that and you do start to risk seeing some rain, and are guaranteed cold weather. If they wanted to host an event up here again, they'd better advertise it early, and to as many bands as possible. Make it a big deal! Live stream it even? Get the best bands in the region to come together and give everyone a good show. I'm sure people would be interested to see what these wildly overlooked bands have got.
