I might die if more corps switch from 16 contras to 12, though I might be kinda nitpicking but I at least think it's pretty noticeable. I'm pretty sure the only finalist corps last season with 16 contras were the Troops and Cavies, and both of them had some of the most well rounded sound I heard, even when compared to corps who scored higher than them in brass. Not sure when Bloo switched off 16 to 12, but I know they marched 16 in 2018 and that brassline was probably the best they've had to date. Maybe now with the 165 member limit more corps will opt in for 16 contras, which would finally start to offset the "synth creep" that a lot of corps seem to have issues with,

Not surprising that Tour has been cut by 20% with rising costs. Guess I shouldn't hold by breath for a show in South Dakota. I knew about Vanguard Cadets going inactive and BDB not touring next year, but this is the first I'm hearing of Legends going inactive. While I did have some questions after watching them this past season, it's extremely disappointing to see them go inactive.

Summer tour has allegedly been cut by 20%. 3 open class corps are not touring: Legends (inactive), Blue Devils B, Vanguard Cadets (inactive). Hadn't heard about Legends going inactive next year. I'm sorry they felt they needed to do that, but I can appreciate that they are making a move that they believe is fiscally responsible. A few years ago, they had to do an emergency fundraising appeal mid-season. They brought in the $100,000 they needed in a matter of days, but it's not a situation you ever want to find yourself in twice. As best I can recall, I first saw Legends in an early season Akron show in 2011. I hadn't heard of them, and their "Skyscapes" show made no impression on me. But I started paying attention to Open Class the next year, and as a longtime fan of Gordon Lightfoot, I was tickled by their decision to program the "Edmund Fitzgerald" that year, and I saw them in person twice. To be sure, eighth place in O.C. was an entirely reasonable placement for that little show, but I loved it anyway. They literally rang a bell 29 times during their closer! They spent the next two years polishing, with pleasant but modest shows, but in 2015, with an appropriately named show called "The Climb," they made their move, placing fifth, and they medaled for the first time in 2016 with "The Grid," still my favorite show of theirs, and settled in with a string of sold Open Class shows in "The Signal," "Along Came a Spider," and "Song of the Siren" before shutting down like everyone else due to the pandemic. They were much smaller this year, but with the talky but moving "May Your Light Shine Forever," punched above their weight to go neck-and-neck with the much larger Battalion in O.C. championships. I do hope they can find a way to return to the field in 2024.

So much love and respect for anyone still trying to keep an Open Class corps alive. It's never been easy, it only ever gets harder, and at least since they shuttered DCM it's been obvious the big corps don't really care if you live or die.
I remain of the opinion that the only way to insure the long-term health of the smaller corps is to foster a series of regional circuits, primarily holding shows in June, in which the big groups serve as a draw and the small groups can build their audience. But, apparently--and to my mind bizarrely--the big corps would rather spend a month in everyday rehearsals than perform in any stadium smaller than a Division I college. I mean, I'm sure it's cheaper, but God what a hellish experience for the members... the members who are paying thousands of dollars for an excellent experience.
We continue on our seemingly irreversible march towards 10 super corps that perform 4 times a summer and charge a year of Ivy League tuition for the privilege.

I'm going to guess that the start date of shows will be closer to July 1st, if not after, rather than the last week of June and there will be fewer weeknight shows with more emphasis put on the bigger Saturday night shows.

Only semi DCI related, but the Auburn Purple Lancers will be returning to drum corps and competing in Sound Sport. I believe the last time they did anything DCI related was in the 70s, so pretty interesting to see their return.
Both Troopers and Cavies seem to be fielding Alumni corps this season too

Music City 2023 - Violent Delights: A Rose and its Thorns musiccityyouth.org/news/violent-delights-a-rose-and-its-thornsI'm not sure if they're finals ready but I'd be surprised to see them place under 15th if they continue the momentum from last year. I could definitely see them having a year like Academy did in 2016 sometime in the near future too

I feel like we usually see more announcements by now... maybe with the delayed season start everything is pushed back?
