I hope we get more participants soon! Last year the numbers were definitely down a bit for Austin compared to 2017. Probably more of the smaller bands headed to Waco in 2018. I don't blame them but I hope our numbers are back up this year!

I do understand why groups are choosing to go to Waco or another regional instead of Austin. In it's short history, Austin very quickly became I'd argue the most competitive regional, with a very heavy top end. And it's been that way ever since the regional started in 2013. Only 16 different bands have ever made finals at the competition, a remarkably low number. The last two seasons have featured the exact same 10 finalists. In the seasons when a new finalist was introduced, it was typically because one of the previous year's finalists didn't return or because a better group from outside of Austin started coming. So if you're a group that doesn't consistently make finals at BOA events and you see such a steady line up of consistent finalists you know you can't compete with, Waco, Midland, McAllen, even going all the way to St. Louis seem like a much better opportunities.
I personally would love to see some different groups in finals this year. With Churchill not attending this year, that opens at least one spot for a band like Pflugerville, Westwood, Westlake if they come back, or maybe even Rouse. It would be pretty crazy to have five Leander ISD schools in finals but definitely seems possible!

It would be pretty crazy to have five Leander ISD schools in finals but definitely seems possible! -------- I hear ya on why bands wouldn't want to attend the Austin BOA. It's like, "why bother?" for many of them. But since it's in our own backyard, it would be silly for Leander ISD bands not to go. It's also one of the earliest BOA's of the season, so it's a great opportunity to get that feedback needed to change things substantially before San Antonio if needed. I seriously see Rouse as a strong contender this fall. They had a great season last year, and their winterguard is doing phenomenal work in their first WGI season. I think 2019 might be Rouse's golden year, sort of like 2018 was for Vista Ridge. Not that I expect them to surge into medal position or anything, but you just never know with these Leander ISD bands. Anything could happen! I would love to see Westwood back at BOA Austin. Their shows are just always crowd pleasers! I really hope they come, but I would understand why if they didn't. Lastly, I see Westlake having a possible stellar year in 2019. Their show last year was fantastic and I only see them going up from there. I sure hope the UIL 6A SMBC in 2020 in our area opens up some more slots because I don't want to see another repeat of the jostling that had to happen last year to get Vista, Vandy, Leander AND Westlake into the last leg of the competition! All four of these bands deserve to be there and it was crazy to think of any one of them being left out. Fortunately, they weren't. Is it September yet???

There will probably be more bands when the lists come out - some bands, even the best of them, don’t like to release what they have planned until the lists come out.

Anderson is now confirmed for Austin. Everything else is TBD, but I’m guessing we’re also going to Waco because that’s the only thing that weekend we could go to

With Winston Churchill not coming to this regional this year, I am really curious who will be there to take that finalist spot. There are several bands that seem worthy contenders.
Westwood has been the most consistent in my opinion over the last several years, but Pflugerville was the first one out last year and could easily get it. John Horn is an enigma as I really dont know what to expect from them in the BOA scene, but I would not be surprised at all to see them get in. Right now though, I am feeling really good about Rouse. After a great end to their season last year they are on an awesome trajectory and their show seems really promising this year.

My bets are on Rouse for now, but I'm really pulling for Westwood being an alum. Pflugerville, Lake Travis, and John Horn also have decent chances at making it but I'd put Rouse and Westwood in over them.

Predictions for this consistently ridiculous contest in tiers: 1---------------------------------- Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX Leander H.S., TX Vandegrift H.S., TX Vista Ridge H.S., TX 2---------------------------------- Cedar Park H.S., TX Cedar Ridge H.S., TX Hendrickson H.S., TX James Bowie H.S., TX Round Rock H.S., TX 3---------------------------------- Jack C. Hays H.S., TX Lake Travis H.S., TX Pflugerville H.S., TX Rouse H.S., TX Westwood H.S., TX 4---------------------------------- Byron P. Steele II H.S., TX Cypress Woods H.S., TX Del Rio H.S., TX John Horn H.S., TX Lubbock-Cooper H.S., TX New Braunfels H.S., TX 5---------------------------------- Belton H.S., TX Johnson H.S., TX Shadow Creek H.S., TX Wagner H.S., TX
Class A: Johnson H.S., TX Class AA: Lubbock-Cooper H.S., TX Class AAA: Leander H.S., TX Class AAAA: Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX
This contest got a whole lot scarier this year! Even with the absence of consistent finalist Churchill, it is gonna be a bloodbath to get in. Hays, Lake Travis, Pflugerville, and Rouse are all coming off fantastic seasons and Westwood is nothing but consistent. It will be interesting to see who takes that last slot in finals or even if two could make it causing a major upset over one of the tier 2 groups.
Tier 4 are groups that will definitely put on a fantastic show, but probably aren't at the level to make their way into finals. I expect Horn to be at the top of this group and the only reason I don't have them in tier 3 is because they are completely new to BOA.
Tier 5 is groups that more than likely won't be competing seriously with any of the above groups, but will be interesting to watch. Belton is going through a complete staff turnover that could either turn out positively or negatively in their favor. Johnson is the brand new school in Hays CISD and look to be hoping for a strong first season given their ambitious schedule. Shadow Creek is a relatively new 5A school from south Houston who made area finals in 2017, I don't know where they're at because I can't find any videos of them. And finally, Wagner. This group had a pretty strong finish at BOA SA almost breaking the top 50, but did not place nearly as well at BOA Austin earlier in the season.
