I came across a Youtube account with all the performances from Hawaii's Menehune Classic competition. Hopefully this is allowed. I figured others (like myself) have probably never seen some of these bands before. www.youtube.com/user/band1/videos

One of the shortcomings of BOA is that we don't often get a flavor for what bands that are far from Indianapolis come up with, let alone bands from across half an ocean! Nice to see what else is out there.

Nice to see what else is out there. That was the original idea behind holding the regional championships, allow a more diverse group of bands to participate in the circuit. BOA or MBA as it was known at the time increased their regional championships from 2 in 1978 to 8 in 1980. Those 1980 regionals were pretty well spread out across the country. I suspect that they may have over extended themselves and had to scale back to 4 regionals in 1981. Logistics has certainly been an issue in getting regionals spread out over a diverse geographic area. Thankfully we can now watch bands online. Millilani was such a treat to watch when they did make the trip to Indy.

We’ve actually had the pleasure of seeing two hawaii bands at nationals. Mililani and Maui. Mililani actually made semis in a pretty deep field! Really impressive.

Mililani's winter guard has also been a pleasure to watch when they make the trips to Dayton. Their 2017 show in particular was impressive. They were a Scholastic A guard and were showing some pretty solid weapons skills for that class. Video below:

This is one of my favorite marching band videos of all time, just seeing the way Mililani move from this angle is incredible. Even though they're nowhere near anyone else, they move better than I'd say 99% of bands on the mainland!

Nice to see what else is out there. I should note that I didn't mean shortcomings as in "this is a solvable problem and I'm mad that it isn't solved", as there almost definitely won't ever be a BOA regional in, say, Hawaii. And it is true that we've seen a couple Hawaiian bands at GN, which is a feat in itself! I just meant that I like to see bands that don't necessarily have the funding or resources to make a trip to a regional or GN worthwhile. There are plenty of "hidden" (by BOA standards) gems in the band world, and I would love to watch every band perform every year if it was even remotely possible.

Adding this to my long long list of why I pray every single night that teleportation spontaneously manifests as a thing that can take place easily and regularly

Funny to see there is also a Castle marching knights in Hawaii😂 They marched the Rose Parade in 1988 when I did! I remember we were lined up next to them at 5 AM in the park with our wool uniforms and heavy duty orange plastic bags per the recommendation of the Rose Parade advisors who said it could be really chilly in the AM on some years. The kids from Hawai'i were in these sheer cloth uniforms freezing like mad. Some of us had already taken the bags off and given them to their guard's twirlers in partiuclar who were in leotard style uniforms. The plan for us was to simply tear the bags off and send them down the ranks to bandparents who would dispose of them. But our drum majors had talks to their drum majors and when we got the call to ready for step off, NORTHROP. TEN HUT! CASTLE. TEN HUT! NORTHROP, REMOVE SHAKOS AND CAREFULLY TAKE YOUR BAGS OFF, SEND THEM GUARD RIGHT DOWN YOUR RANKS TO CASTLE! [massive cheers from the Castle members] We were able cheer them a bit as they arrived at the park at the end too but were being shooed to our buses to vacate the area. Good times.

When we did Macy's, we brought thermal blankets. Union was lined up next to us, and I gave mine to the lovely young lady from their band that was absolutely freezing.

It's one of the great memories of that trip. I remember at the end of the parade route we were EXHAUSTED (those who have marched the Rose Parade know what I'm talking about) and were saying, "Man, I wish we had uniforms like that Castle band from Hawai'i!"
Fun fact, at the end of that parade is the ONLY time Dr. Pepper has ever tasted good to me. It was the only soda option left in the barrels when we got there.
